A novel converter-free AC LED driver that is highly resistant to the fluctuation of AC voltage is proposed in this study. By removing large passive components, such as the bulky capacitor and the large-value inductor, the integration of the driver circuit is enhanced while the driving current remains stable. The proposed circuit provides LED lamps with a driving current that can follow the sinusoid waveform to obtain a very high power factor (PF) and low total harmonic distortion (THD). The LED input current produced by this driving current is insensitive to fluctuations in the AC voltage. Users will thus not feel that LED lamps are flashing during the fluctuation. Experiment results indicate that the proposed system can obtain PF of 0.999 and THD as low as 3.3% for a five-string 6 W LED load under 220 V at 50 Hz.

When Flat Panel Display (FPD) is made with backlight module, such as LED TV, it inherently suffers from the non-uniform backlight luminance problem that results in un-even brightness distribution throughout the TV screen. If the luminance of each pixel location of a TV screen as a function of the driving voltage can be measured, it can be used to compensate the non-uniformity of the backlight module. We use a carefully calibrated imaging system to take pictures of a TV screen at different levels of brightness and generate the compensation functions for the driving circuitry to correct the luminance level at each pixel location. Making use of the fact that the luminance of the screen is normally brightest at around the center of the screen and gradually decreases toward the border of the screen, the luminance of the whole TV screen is approximated by a mathematical function of the pixel locations. The parameters of the function are computed in the least square sense by the values of both the pixel luminance sent from the driving circuit and the grayscale value measured from the image taken by the imaging system. To justify the correction system, a simple second order polynomial function is used to approximate the luminance across the screen. When the driving circuit voltage is corrected according to the measured function, the variance of the screen luminance is reduced to one tenth of the one measured from the un-corrected TV screen.
This paper proposes an LED driving circuit with a digital controller, power factor correct (PFC) function, and low light flicker. The key topology of the proposed circuit is a conventional Flyback combined with a pre-stage. As a result, there will be less light flicker than with other one-stage PFC circuits. A digital controller, implemented using a low-cost microcontroller, dsPIC30F2020, will meet PFC and low light flicker. The experimental results validate the functionality of the proposed circuit.

This paper presents the Two-stage LED Driving system using LLC resonant converter for LED lighting application. Due to the existence of the nonisolation DC/DC converter to control the LED current and the light intensity, the conventional three-stage LED Driving system has the problem of low power conversion efficiency. To solve this problem, a novel scheme without any nonisolation DC/DC converter is proposed, in which, the isolated DC/DC converter, e.g., LLC resonant converter in the paper, can perform the LED current control and stage, e.g., PFC stage and LLC stage, the efficiency can be significantly improved. Moreover, the cost and the volume of the whole LED driving system can be reduced compared to those of the conventional ones. The operational principle and the characteristics of the proposed scheme are presented. The proposed scheme is verified experimentally with a 45W output prototype LED driver.

Now it's a trend to install a series of white fluorescent light and orange high pressure sodium lamps because tunnel lighting should be opaque to the safety of drivers from soot, dust, humidity, and fog. Also fluorescent lighting is replaced to LED due to the fact that it improves amenity and object recognition and LED lighting has gradually been improved its nature. In this paper, we have implemented the circuits of the yellow series of high-pressure sodium lamps and white series of LED lights at one board to improve the transparency and recognition of objects. It is possible for inductive high-pressure sodium lamps and the capacitive LED drivers to circuit without power factor compensation. Two circuit parts share only a small number of parts, so low cost LED drivers compared to conventional ones are possible. Therefore, the implementation of the hybrid lighting with high-pressure sodium lamps and LED lights that can be driven at the same time by one driving circuit is possible. The LED capacitive power factor was 0.91 while individually implemented the sodium lamp power factor was 0.98. It shows not only the 2% improvement of hybrid forms but also the efficiency and THD.
This paper describes buck converter's MOSFET driver for high-brightness LED strings. The power driving high-side MOSFET is supplied from the power source of control circuit part. The practical considerations and future work are also described.

The purpose of this study is to develope a current variation control system appropriate to the various LED(Light Emitting Diode) lamps using current control system equipped with microcontroller based voltage regulator of power driving circuit. For this, we will suggest a stable control system of current variation to enable a stable power-supply and current-control, consisting of circuit to minimize the affects on the LED forward voltage using variable resistance and compensating resistance. The method of constant current circuit and energy savings using microcontroller based voltage regulator suggested in this study can be applied to various a big capacity LED lamp to minimize the unnecessay heat generation and to control resistace delicately. Ultimately, we expect the results of this study will upgrade the reliability of LED lamp by supplying the current stably.

For two well-known modulation methods, stepwise current modulation (SCM) and pulse width modulation (PWM), the effects of driving current modulation conditions on chromaticity were experimentally investigated in a white LED lighting system. For the experimental implementation of both SCM and PWM, a white LED lighting was fabricated using phosphor converted (PC) white light emitting diodes (LEDs) and a driving circuit module was developed. By using them, the variations of illuminance, color coordinates, and spectrum were evaluated under various forward current conditions. Through the analysis in color coordinates, yellow shift in SCM and blue shift in PWM were observed on chromaticity diagrams with increasing average driving current. In addition, in order to analyze color deviation quantitatively, color distance before and after current increase, and the correlated color temperature (CCT) were calculated. As a result, for the white LED lighting in both modulation conditions, the maximum difference in the calculated CCT was obtained close to 1000 K. It means that careful consideration is required to be taken in the design of illumination systems to avoid serious problems such industrial accidents.

This paper deals with noise reduction on a light source driving board in a projector. We analyze causes of noise/vibration in the circuit with the present increasing use of LD and LED driving boards. The main source of noise is the MLCC in the driving board. Our aim is to investigate how the mechanical arrangement of the circuit elements affects noise reduction. The result of our experiment shows that noise can be reduced by symmetrical arrangement and slots in PCB. This result is expected to facilitate a variety of applications for manufactures without a need to change circuit elements.

LED has been great attentions in lighting industry because of its long life-time, high efficiency, excellent light output characteristics. However, the life-time of the LED driving system is decreased because of the electrolytic capacitor which is used in the power conversion system for driving LED lighting. Therefore the capacitance reduction methods have been studied to replace an electrolytic capacitor with film or tantalum capacitor. This paper presents the Single stage PFC flyback converter with the simplified third harmonic current injection circuit to reduce output capacitance and the proposed system is theoretically analyzed and verified through the experiment.
