To get the informations of quality uniformity of threshed burley tobacco produced from 1997 to 2001 and processed at various leaf processing factories, chemical constituents contents and coefficient of variation(C.V.) were analysed. The average chemical constituents contents of 12 grades during 5 years ranged as follows; nicotine 1.76~2.66%, total nitrogen 4.15~4.80%, crude ash 21.6~22.4% and chlorine 1.08~1.20%. The variations of chemical constituents contents among crop years was higher in nicotine while lower in crude ash. The nicotine content of upper leaves were influenced negatively by rainfalls, while total nitrogen content were influenced positively by air temperature and sunshine hours during July. The C.V. of chemical content in same grade was higher in chlorine and nicotine while lower in crude ash. The ratio of C.V. among leaf tobacco processing factories/C.V. of total sample in same grade was high in nicotine. To reduce the C.V. of chemical constituents, it is recommendable to thresh the leaf tobacco at one processing factory. When the leaves being processed at one factory, the decreasing effect of deviation was higher in nicotine, particularly.
Incidence of rice blast on new rice cultivars and elite lines was observed from 194 to 1996 in Icheon, Chuncheon, Jecheon and Naju areas. The observations were made in the nuseries and in the fields. In the nurseries, only cultivars Daesanbyeo and Hyangmibyeo 2 showed moderate levels of resistance to leaf blast, with the disease index 0 to 6. From the field observations, it was found that cultivars Hyangmibyeo 2 and Suwon 414 were highly resistant to leaf blast, but susceptible to neck blast. the fields, leaf blast was not observed. In general, there was great yearly and regional variation in the incidence of neck blast within the same cultivars, some times ranging from 0 to 100% of incidence. However, the range of fluctuation in the disease incidence were relatively small in the cultivars Daejinbyeo (0∼17.5%), Daesanbyeo (0∼4.0%), Donganbyeo (0∼21.4%) and Hwasambyeo (0∼13.9%). Hyangmibyeo 2 and Seojinbyeo were rarely infected with neck blast in Chuncheon and Naju all of the years, the same cultivars were severely infested with neck blast; 45.1 and 45.5%, respectively, in Jecheon in 1995. The occurrence of different races of rice blast fungus were different at different areas. However, it was found that in Icheon, Chuncheon, Jecheon and Naju areas, the dominant races were KI-409, KJ-201 and KJ-301.
Effects of soil moisture on growth of Panax ginseng, of various factors on soil moisture, and of moisture on nutrition, quality, physiological disorder, diseases and insect damage were reviewed. Optimum soil moisture was 32% of field capacity with sand during seed dehiscence, and 55-65% for plant growth in the fields. Optimum soil moisture content for growth was higher for aerial part than for root and higher for width than for length. Soil factors for high yield in ginseng fields appeared to be organic matter, silt, clay, agreggation, and porosity that contributed more to water holding capacity than rain fall did, and to drainage. Most practices for field preparation aimed to control soil moisture rather than nutrients and pathogens. Light intensity was a primary factor affecting soil moisture content through evaporation. Straw mulching was best for the increase of soil moisture especially in rear side of bed. Translocation to aerial part was inhibited by water stress in order of Mg, p, Ca, N an Mn while accelerated in order of Fe, Zn and K. Most physiological disorders(leaf yellowing, early leaf fall, papery leaf spot, root reddening, root scab, root cracking, root dormancy) and quality factors were mainly related to water stress. Most critical diseases were due to stress, excess and variation of soil water, and heavy rain fall. The role of water should be studied in multidiciplinary, especially in physiology and pathology.
1) Germination rate was rather irregular than decreasing as increasing dose of radiation and there were no differences between Kyong-Sam and Chuong-Bang of Chinese cabbage. 2) In R1 generation, abnormal leaves from seedling of irradiated seeds were observed. These were more apparent in X-ray irradiation than in thermal neutron. 3) Seedling height was inhibited with increasing dose of X-ray and thermal neutrons. Growth inhibition was more remarkable in X-ray than in thermal neutron. Kyong-Sam demonstrated more sensitivity than Chyong-Bang in both X-ray and thermal neutron. 4) Seedling height produced from seeds subjected to thermal neutrons showed small variation around its mean value, while in X-irradiation there was a greater deviaton from the mean value. 5) Fertility was decreased as increasing with dose, while the frequency of abortive pollen was increased. There were variability of the fertility and frequency of abortive pollen among plants or branches of a plant. 6) The mutants were obtained more in thermal neutron irradiation than in X-ray. The types of mutations obtained in Chinese radish of R2 generation were abnormal leaf, densely glowing leaf, degeneration in growing point and dwarf. The maximum frequency of phenotypic mutations was abnormal leaf mutation.
South Korea is pushing for the advancement of crop production technology to achieve food self-sufficiency and meet the demand for safe food. A medium-sized satellite for agriculture is being launched in 2023 with the aim of collecting and providing information on agriculture, not only in Korea but also in neighboring countries. The satellite is to be equipped with various sensors, though reference data for ground information are lacking. Hyperspectral remote sensing combined with 1st derivative is an efficient tool for the identification of agricultural crops. In our study, we develop a system for hyperspectral analysis of the ground-based reflectance spectrum, which is monitored seven times during the cultivation period of three soybean crops using a PSR-2500 hyperspectral sensor. In the reflection spectrum of soybean canopy, wavelength variations correspond with stages of soybean growths. The spectral reflection characteristics of soybeans can be divided according to growth into the vegetative (V)stage and the reproductive (R)stage. As a result of the first derivative analysis of the spectral reflection characteristics, it is possible to identify the characteristics of each wavelength band. Using our developed monitoring system, we observed that the near-infrared (NIR) variation was largest during the vegetative (V1-V3) stage, followed by a similar variation pattern in the order of red-edge and visible. In the reproductive stage (R1-R8), the effect of the shape and color of the soybean leaf was reflected, and the pattern is different from that in the vegetative (V) stage. At the R1 to R6 stages, the variation in NIR was the largest, and red-edge and green showed similar variation patterns, but red showed little change. In particular, the reflectance characteristics of the R1 stage provides information that could help us distinguish between the three varieties of soybean that were studied. In the R7-R8 stage, close to the harvest period, the red-edge and NIR variation patterns and the visible variation patterns changed. These results are interpreted as a result of the large effects of pigments such as chlorophyll for each of the three soybean varieties, as well as from the formation and color of the leaf and stem. The results obtained in this study provide useful information that helps us to determine the wavelength width and range of the optimal band for monitoring and acquiring vegetation information on crops using satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)

This study was carried out to examine whether the leaf size is likely to be used as a selection criterion for large seed genotype in soybean (Glycine. max (L.) Merr.) breeding program. Two hundred twenty nine soybean germplasms which had collected in Korea, United States, China and Japan were used in this experiment. The area of unifoliate leaf, middle leaflet of first trifoliate and third trifoliate leaf ranged from $3.2cm^2$ to $33.8cm^2$, 9.2 to $29.5cm^2$, and 7.2 to $58.9cm^2$, respectively. One hundred seed weight also showed great variation from 2.7 to 39.0 gram. The average leaf area of unifoliate, middle leaflet of first trifoliate and third trifoliate leaf were $15.7cm^2$, $18.1cm^2$ and $32.7cm^2$, respectively, and that of seed average weight was 17.2 gram per one hundred seed. Significantly positive correlations were observed between seed weight and leaf area of unifoliate (r=$0.80^{**}$), first trifoliate (r=$0.75^{**}$) and third trifoliate (r=$0.67^{**}$), respectively. Both the leaf length and leaf width of unifoliate, middle leaflet of first trifoliate and third trifoliate leaf were significantly positively correlated with seed weight and both the correlations of unifoliate were higher than the other leaves. The correlations of leaf width in soybean leaflet were higher than those of leaf length. Leaf length/width (L/W) ratio of upper leaf was higher than that of lower leaf in the leaf size. Both the leaf area and leaf width of unifoliate leaf are the most suitable predictive characteristics of early selection in related to seed weight for soybean breeding program.

Mulberry containing many bioactive components is very useful as functional food resource. Mulberry leaf ice cream, mulberry leaf tea, mulberry noodle, mulberry fruit jam, mulberry wine etc. have been developed in Korea. Because mulberry fruit has abundant natural pigments belonging to anthocyanins, we can expect their therapeutic and physiological effects. However, there are few reports about mulberry seed. So we studied on fatty acids of mulberry seed for the purpose of increasing the functional utilization of mulberry fruit. (omitted)
Ginseng Folium has been used to cure acute gastritis, alcoholism and anemia. The morphological and anatomical characteristics of the leaf and stem of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer cultivated in Korea for 1 to 6 years are described. It is found that the vessels increase in number and diameter, and also the vascular bundles increase in number, as the plant becomes old. The result showed that the commercial &In Sam Ip& samples on the markets of Pusan, Kumsan, Taegu and Seoul have been derived from the leaf and stem of 4 to 6 years old P. ginseng plants, most of them being 5-6 years old.
Two varieties of Aucuba japonica differ in ways that can be considered adaptive to differing geo-climatic conditions in their respective distribution ranges. Irrespective of growth stage, the mean leaf size of A. japonica var. japonica was significantly larger than A. japonica var. borealis. Smaller leaf size and ultimately smaller stature of A. japonica var. borealis are an advantage under the higher snow load and lower temperatures in the forests along the East Sea where the variety grows. Snow load also acted as an important driving force for structural modifications of A. japonica var. borealis from cellular level in leaves to the organization of branch extension growth. Global warming by changing snowfall patterns in Japan may lead to range shifts in the two varieties of A. japonica.
Incidence of rice blast on new rice cultivars and elite lines was observed from 1995 to 1997 in Icheon, Chuncheon, Jecheon and Naju areas. The observation was made in the nurseries and fields. In the nurseries, three cultivars Grubyeo, Sangjuchalbyeo and Suwon 414 showed moderate levels of resistance to leaf blast, with the disease index 0 to 5. From the field observation, it was found that cultivars Heugjinjubyeo and Unbong 18 were highly resistant to leaf blast, but susceptible to neck blast. In general, there was a great variation yearly and regionally in the incidence of neck blast within the same cultivar, ranging from 0 to 100%. However, the range of neck blast infection was relatively narrower in the cultivars Yunghaebyeo (0∼2.4%) and Suwon 414 (0∼2.2%) during observation period. Races of rice blast fungus were variable at different areas. Among them dominant races were KI-409, KJ-201 and KJ-301.
