High Performance Control of LED Drive System for LCD Backlight (LCD 백라이트를 위한 LED 드라이브 시스템의 고성능 제어)

  • This paper proposes high performance control of light emitting diode(LED) drive system for liquid crystal display(LCD) backlight. The CCFL(cold cathode fluorescent lamp)was used to a conventional LCD backlight. Due to improvement on luminous efficiency, long life and wide color gamut, LED has gradually substituted for CCFL as backlight. The backlight using LED is necessary to use many LED. For that reason, the LED backlight is using a lot of LED driving circuits. The many LED driving circuit is generated a current deviation between LED. Eventually, it is caused brightness deviation between LED. Therefore, this paper improves the current deviation using transformer and balancing capacitor to solve this problem. Also, for accurate and uniform brightness control, this paper is applied the artificial intelligent control to a dimming control. This paper is compared with conventional system, and validity of this paper proves through that result.

  • Color dimming technology has been developed for high color gamut and aggressive power saving. In our new algorithm, we proposed a new concept of 'color class', with which it is possible to control RGB color luminance effectively and exactly. We reached color gamut of 155% of NTSC 1976 and reduced power consumption under 100 watt for 46 inch LCD.

  • LCD panels are increasingly used to show moving image material, for example in LCD television sets. However, moving images become blurred on LCD panels. One of the causes of motion blur is the slow reaction of LC(liquid crystal) cell to change in the pixel value. Another cause of motion blur is the hold-type characteristic of the LCD panel, during the frame time the image is shown continuously. This type of motion blur can be reduced with a scanning backlight. We have designed and fabricated a scanning backlight system that solves the hold-type characteristic problem in a way that Flat fluorescent lamp divided 6 blocks was scanned 60Hz.

  • LCD backlight boosting and the integration of boosting and dimming are proposed based on image analysis to maximize perceptual image qualities and to reduce display system power. Based on the histogram of the image data, methods for selecting an image suitable for boosting and for adjusting the optimum backlight brightness are proposed. A comprehensive combined optimization method of LCD backlight boosting, dimming and bypass based on image characteristics is also described. Perceptual image quality enhancement and power consumption are evaluated based on well known image databases. Average subjective image quality is improved by 24.8%, RMS contrast is improved more than 20%, and average power consumption is reduced by 15.94% compared to conventional uniform boosting.

  • It is expected that there will be the regulation for limiting the amount of Hg content in cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) for LCD backlight system. Now it is necessary to develop mercury-free backlight system. The mercury-free CCFL coated with PDP phosphors was fabricated and evaluated. The CCFL filled with Xe and Ne showed 4500 ㏅/$m^2$ with efficiency of 13 lm/W.

Fabrication of high brightness multi-lamp backlight system for a large size LCD panel inspection equipment

  • The large size and high brightness backlight system for LCD panel inspection equipment was designed, fabricated, and evaluated. The cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) instead of the hot cathode fluorescent lamp (HCFL) were used as the light source. The inverters for driving multi-lamp CCFL backlight systems were also designed and fabricated. The measured luminance of the fabricated CCFL backlight system was 20,000 cd/$m^2$ and the uniformity of the backlight was 85%. The fabricated backlight system was successfully applied to the LCD panel inspection equipment.

Optical Simulation of Direct-type Backlight Unit for Medical Application

  • In this study, it was investigated about optical simulation in direct-type backlight design. Direct-type backlight has been used high-brightness backlight such as medical LCD application. The key parameter in designing direct-type backlight was consists of three geometrical dimension such as the distance of two lamps, the gap of lamp and reflection plate and the number of lamps. It has many of variations in optical design and it causes the different properties in backlight system. It shows the best values of above parameters; 26 mm of the distance of two lamps, 4.5 mm of the gap of lamp and reflection plate and 16 lamps. And we produced the specimen as above condition, and acquired good result in backlight such as the value of the brightness is 6423 nit in center of emission area and less than 5 % in brightness uniformity. It shows the effective ways of designing backlight system using optical simulation method for medical LCD application.

  • We present an ultra-slim LCD module for 40-inch FHD TV. By employing edge-lit backlight system, module thickness of 10mm is achieved. To satisfy the luminance spec of 450 nits in FHD resolution, it is critical to adopt high efficient LED and optical components.

  • The power supply devices for reducing the size of the LCD TV are increasingly required for high efficiency and highe power density. Recently, the LED backlight of the LCD TV comes into the spotlight for LCD TV, because the conventional CCFL backlight has difficult to use constantly according to the mercury restrictions. And In this paper, the LLC resonant converter using the planar transformer for slim-type LED backlight of LCD TV is presented and verified through an experimental prototype for 47 inch LCD TVs with LED backlight system.
