Diamond-Like-Carbon 박막표면에 UV 배향법을 이용한 액정 배향 효과 (Liquid Crystal Alignment Effects by UV Alignment Method on a Diamond-Like-Carbon Thin Film Surface)

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities by the UV alignment method on a diamond like carbon (DLC) thin film surface. A good LC alignment by UV exposure on the DLC thin film surface at $200\AA$ of layer thickness was achieved. Also, a good LC alignment by the UV alignment method on the DLC thin film surface was observed at annealing temperature of $180^{\circ}C$. However, the alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the good thermal stability of LC alignment by the UV alignment method on the DLC thin film surface can be achieved.

  • The effect of liquid crystal (LC) alignment on a homeotropic polyimide (PI) surface induced by ion beam (IB) irradiation and rubbing process was studied. LC alignment was not affected by IB irradiation with an exposure time of 10 s, and an IB irradiation with an exposure time of 60 s more effectively oriented the LCs on the PI layer than the rubbing process. It was assumed that the LC alignment depended on the C-O bonds created from the C=O bonds on the PI surface broken by IB irradiation after an exposure time of 60 s, which resulted in a strong surface energy that transformed the homeotropic LC alignment to homogeneous states.

폴리이미드막에 있어서 네마틱 액정의 메모리 효과를 이용한 전사 배향법에 관한 연구 (Investigation of transcription alignment method by using memory effect of nematic liquid crystal on polyimide surface)

  • In this paper we investigated the transcription of liquid crystal (LC) alignment method by using memory effect of nematic(N) LCon polymide(PI) surface with side chain as for non-rubbing alignment techniques. That the monodomain alignment of aligned NLC is observed by microscope textures in the cells on PI surface with side chain. We obtained that the pretilt angle of NLC are generated about 3.7$^{\circ}$on PI surface. We suggest that the LC alignment by using transcription alingnment method is attributed to memory effect of NLC on PI surface.

  • We prepared the blend alignment layers made from coumarin based photopolymer and polyimides for liquid crystal(LC) alignment using linearly polarized ultraviolet(UV) exposure. The alignment properties of LC were found to depend on the type of polyimide in the blend alignment layers. The degree of photereaction of polyimide was important factor for LC alignment direction on the blend alignment layers.

  • In this study, liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities for homeotropic alignment on the $ZrO_x$ thin film by electron beam evaporation method were investigated. Also, the control of pretilt angles and thermal stabilities of the NLC treated on $ZrO_x$ thin film were investigated. The uniform LC alignment on the $ZrO_x$ thin film surfaces and good thermal stabilities with electron beam evaporation can be achieved. It is considerated that the LC alignment on the $ZrO_x$ thin film by electron beam evaporation is attributed to elastic interaction between LC molecules and micro-grooves at the $ZrO_x$ thin film surface created by evaporation. In addition, it can be achieved the good electro-optical (EO) properties of the VA-LCD on $ZrO_x$ thin film layer with. oblique electron beam evaporation.

  • This paper reports our observation that the addition of nanoparticles in the negative dielectric anisotropic liquid crystal (LC) cell can exhibit the properties of vertical alignment without using alignment layers. The electro-optical properties of this nanoparticles-induced vertical alignment in the LC cell are very similar to the conventional homeotropic LC cell with alignment layers. This technique can be used to fabricate a flexible LC display demanding low temperature process

  • We investigated new type non-robbing liquid crystal (LC) alignment techniques in the cell with slanted non-polarized ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on polyimide (Pl) film. It is shown that the uniform alignment for nematic (N) LC is obtained by using slanted non-polarized UV irradiation on Pl surface. We successfully obtained that the pretilt ang1e of NLC is generated about 3 degree in the LC cells by using slanted non-polarized UV irradiation with 70 degree on Pl surface. We consider that the pretilt angle generation for NLC is attributed to interaction between the LC molecular and the PI surface. We conclude that the uniform LC alignment is attributed to anisotropic dispersion force effect due to photo depolymerization of polymer on Pl surface.

  • Photoalignment materials of PGMAcr, poly[3-(acryloyloxy)-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate] using an acrylate unit photopolymerized by a photo-initiator and PGMA4Ch, poly[3- (4-ehalconyloxy)-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate] using photodimerization by the chalcone group were synthesized. Also, the liquid crystal (LC) alignment capabilities on the photopolymer layers were studied. A good LC alignment with UV exposure on the PGMAcr surface can be obtained. However, LC alignment defects were observed on the PGMA4Ch surface. The LC alignment capability of the PGMAcr surface by the photoinitiator was better than that of the PGMA4Ch surface by the chalcone group which is a photosensitive moiety.

Effects of Thermal Imidization and Annealing on Liquid Crystal Alignment ever Rubbed Polyimide Layers: Change in the Pretilt Angle

  • The fabrication of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels involves several thermal processes such as imidization of the alignment layer (AL) and annealing of the rubbed polyimide AL. The nature of these processes on the LC alignment, especially on the pretilt angle (Θ$\_$p/) has been systematically studied, employing various types of polyimide structures. The imidization effect depends on the nature of polyimid precursors; Θ$\^$p/ increases with the degree of the imidization for the main-chain type of ALs, due to the decrease in the surface polarity, but this relation is not applicable to the alkylated ones in which the steric effect at the AL surface by the aliphatic side chains is dominant. Annealing of the rubbed polyimide AL deteriorates its rubbing-induced molecular orientation and subsequently the overlying LC alignment, resulting in the decrease in Θ$\_$p/. Especially, annealing of the LC cell affects the LC-AL interaction as well as the AL orientation and thus its effect on LC alignment depends sensitively on the nature of LC-polyimide interface; aromatic moiety in the polyimide structure gives better thermal stability of LC alignment while fluorinated polyimide ALs induce the less stable alignment.

  • In this study, we investigated the pretilt angle generation and liquid crystal (LC) alignment by ultraviolet (UV) exposure during imidization of polyimide on the polymer with side chain. The generated pretilt angle of nematic (N) LC using in-situ photo-alignment method was smaller than that of the conventional UV photo-alignment method. Also, the generated pretilt angle of NLC tends to increase by annealing.
