The automobile industry has developed Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADASs) to prevent traffic accidents and reduce the burden for drivers. One example is the Lane Keeping Assistance System (LKAS), which was developed for automotive vehicle systems for safety and better driving. The main system of the LKAS supports the driver while maintaining the vehicle within a lane. LKAS uses a radar sensor and camera sensor to collect information about the vehicle's position in the lane and send commands to the actuator to influence the lateral movement of the vehicle if necessary. Recently, vehicles equipped with LKAS have become commercially available. Test procedures for international LKAS evaluation are being discussed and developed by international committees, such as the International Organization for Standardization and United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. In Korea, an evaluation of LKASs for car safety is being planned by the Korean New Car Assessment Program. Therefore, test procedures should be developed for LKASs that are suitable for the domestic road environment while accommodating international standards. We developed a test scenario for LKASs and propose a formula for obtaining the target relative distance. To validate the methods, a series of experiments were conducted using commercially available vehicles equipped with LKAS.

The leading technologies of the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assist System) are ACC (Advanced Cruise Control), LKAS (Lane Keeping Assist System), and AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking). LKAS is a system that uses cameras and infrared sensors to control steering and return to its running lane in the event of unintentional deviations. The actual test is performed for a safety evaluation and verification of the system. On the other hand, research on the system evaluation method is insufficient when an additional steering angle is applied. In this study, a model using Prescan was developed and simulated for the scenarios proposed in the preceding study. Comparative analyses of the simulation and the actual test were performed. As a result, the modeling validity was verified. A difference between the front wheels and the lane occurred due to the return velocity. The results revealed a maximum error of 0.56 m. The error occurred because the lateral velocity of the car was relatively small. On the other hand, the distance from wheels to the lanes displayed a tendency of approximately 0.5 m. This can be verified reliably.

Considering the need for an infrastructure-level review, this study analyzed the impact of truck platooning on freeway traffic flow and the effect of dedicated lanes based on domestic road and traffic conditions. According to the study, the higher traffic volume and truck ratio, the higher ratio of platoons and the greater size of platoons are formed, which results in greater effect of increasing the average speed of the network. Therefore, the routes with heavy traffic and heavy cargo traffic could be positively considered for truck platooning. However, the analysis showed that the effect of increasing the average speed of the entire network is difficult to expect in the event of a queue due to entry and exit, and that the overall network's throughput could be reduced. Therefore, traffic operation strategies associated with the access road, such as securing capacity of the connection, are needed to maximize the effect of truck platooning. When it comes to the effect of dedicated lane, it could have a positive effect only if one lane was fully operated by automated trucks under the condition of 100% MPR, which allowed positive effects in all aspects, such as higher average speed, throughput, and reduced conflict rates.

Access management is aimed at preserving the road's high intercity mobility. In urbanized areas, immoderate acceleration lane-length requirements restrict the accessibility of land. Therefore, there are many opinions to revise the minimum acceleration lane-length requirement. For this purpose, it is important to diagnose the effects of slow vehicles on the mainline. This study analyzed a single merging vehicle's total delay occurrence depending on the mainline traffic flow rate and merging speed. A linear relationship was observed between the mainline traffic flow rate and total delay. As a merging speed increases gradually from 40km/h to 100km/h in 20km/h intervals, the total delay decreases by 5.0, 1.6, and 5.1 times, respectively. This shows that the ideal condition with the total delay is less than 0.5 vehicle·sec when there is no speed difference between the mainline and merging vehicle. On the other hand, given the one-second response time of drivers, the total delay occurrence was slightly low when the speed difference between the mainline and merging vehicle was less than 20km/h.
A lane departure warning system (LDWS) is an effective technology-based countermeasure for preventing traffic crashes as it provides warning information to drivers. Understanding the characteristics of perception and satisfaction levels on LDWS is fundamental for deriving better performance and functionality enhancements of the system. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the user satisfaction of LDWS. A survey to collect user perception and user preference data was conducted. Both cross-tabulation analysis and binary logistic regression technique were adopted to identify the factors affecting user satisfaction for LDWS. The results revealed that the accuracy and timeliness of warning information was significant for evaluating the effectiveness of LDWS. In particular, the warning accuracy at a curve segment on the road was the most dominant factor affecting user satisfaction. The outcome of this study would be valuable in evaluating and designing LDWS functionalities.

This study was intended to increase efficiency of traffic flow management on intersection. The result suggested to establish a left-turn at own risk lane to increase efficiency of traffic flow on intersection. The scope of the research was to investigate the geometric structure of a signal-controlled intersection, traffic volume(density) with respect to directions and traffic signal display, and to select a signalling intersection into which a car waiting for a traffic signal enters by adjusting the display sequence of traffic signal. The delay with respect to directions and for the whole intersection was compared for the current situation and an improvement plan. Using TSIS, a traffic analysis package, the traffic situation on an intersection was investigated. Based on the simulation result for Seok-Jeon intersection in Ma-San selected from the field investigation of intersections to which an improvement plans would be applicable, the waiting time in the direction without a entering traffic signal was decreased to be 78.6 seconds per car and that of the direction expecting the increase of waiting time was increased by 4 seconds per car only. It was confirmed that the waiting time for the whole intersection was improved.

To alleviate the demand on private car that is constantly increasing, Busan Metropolitan City (BMC) has established Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) to revitalize public transportation. But there are no unified lane system between BRT and general bus stations, which makes off-lane turning general bus to contribute to congestion. And as the bottleneck phenomenon at entrance/exit accelerates the congestion, there has been huge dissatisfaction among commuting drivers. Therefore, this study identifies efficient methods to operate better through measuring civilian awareness. We evaluate both satisfaction and drawbacks on BRT service with Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA). We first distinguish the groups by the awareness on BRT and their main transit usage, and then clarify the difference between the groups. And as a result, the group who is positive to BRT and uses buses often demands improvement in bus indoor comfort and curbing jaywalking. On the other hand, group who is negative to BRT and uses private cars often demands improvement in lane changing and the moving speed of private cars. We next examines the groups with MDPREF, one method of Multidimensional Scaling (MDS). And we have clarified that the evaluating criteria and the individual attributes of the groups corresponds very well.

TPCLT is a advanced signal system that serves twice left turn phases during the same cycle. TPCLT can be a useful where the left turn traffic volume is high and the length of the left turn lane is short. This study examined the effectiveness of TPCLT in reducing delay for a signalized three-Leg intersection and proposed the application of TPCLT signal system. 108 scenarios with different traffic volumes were created. This study analyzed the control delay of the three-Leg intersection in case TPCLT is operated and non-TPCLT is operated. As a result of analysis, it was shown that TPCLT was effective in most of the scenarios. When traffic volume ratio of the left turn is 30~40%, TPCLT was more effective at reducing the control delay. The study result shows significant delay reduction for the left turning traffic and it is approximately 50 seconds. The opposing movement's average control delay increased 2 seconds. The effect of TPCLT on the length of left turn lane was analyzed. As a result, it is found that TPCLT is effective when the length of left turn lane is 30%~60% compared to that of conventional three leg intersection operations.

In Korea, interest in truck platooning is increasing because most cargo transportation is done by road. Truck platooning is the operation of two or more trucks in a row to form one platoon, which can increase road capacity and improve fuel efficiency. In this study, to analyze the effect of truck platooning on traffic flow, scenarios were created according to traffic conditions and truck platooning operating conditions. In order to understand the effect of the truck platooning operating conditions, correlation analysis was conducted with the average travel speed, the number of lane change disturbance, and the number of disturbance in the entry/exit section. As a result, the number of trucks in the platoon, the spacing of trucks in the platoon, and the spacing between platoons were found to have an effect on the average speed and the number of lane change disturbance In addition, the truck platooning ratio was found to have a strong correlation with the average travel speed and the number of lane change disturbance regardless of the LOS.

The speed change lane is installed at the point where the roads are connected on the urban roads, reducing the relative speed to facilitate traffic communication. However, in the case of the speed limit of 30 km/h in accordance with the implementation of the safe speed "5030" in the city, the standard is ambiguous, and there are criticisms about the installation of the transmission lane. This study conducted a pilot study on the traffic patterns of the speed change lanes, focusing on the section where the safe speed "5030" policy was scheduled to be implemented after theoretical consideration of the speed change lanes. After on-site investigation, as a result of analyzing the traffic pattern according to the travel speed of the main road according to road conditions and traffic conditions, the effectiveness of the speed change lane according to the safety speed "5030" was analyzed. In this study, the installation criteria for speed change lane by speed were presented. The criteria is that "speed change lanes should not be installed when the speed limit is 30 km/h, and speed change lanes should be installed when the speed limit is 50 km/h." The criteria will be considered as a reference when establishing engineering standards for connection of other facilities in urban areas in the future. It is expected that unnecessary restrictions on individuals' exercise of private property rights will be minimized, smooth traffic flow and secure safety by the installation of speed change lanes and expansion of turning radius.
