  • In the present study, some quinoline derivatives have been synthesized like 8-methoxy-4-methyl-2-amino-(3'-chloro-2'-oxo-4'-substituted aryl-1'-azetidinyl)quinolines 8-12 and 8-methoxy-4-methyl-2-amino-(2'-substituted aryl-4'-oxo-1',3'-thiazolidin-3'-yl) quinolines 13-17 from 8-methoxy-4-methyl-2-(substituted arylidenyliminoamino)-quinolines 3-7. The structural assignments of these compounds were based on spectral (IR, $^1H$-NMR, Mass) and elemental (C, H, N) analysis. Further, these compounds were evaluated for antibacterial activity against various bacterial strains. Three compounds 10, 11 and 16 were found to exhibit potent antibacterial activity as compared to the standard drug amphicillin.

  • This study aimed to examine the influence of 3,6-anhydroxygalactose (L-AHG) on the pro-inflammatory M1 polarization and pro-inflammatory responses observed in the RAW264.7 mouse macrophage cell line following stimulation with lipopolysaccharides (LPS). L-AHG exhibited a significant and dose-dependent inhibition of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression, a hallmark of M1 polarization, and subsequent NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Furthermore, the LPS-induced upregulation of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which drives the production of prostaglandin E2, an inflammatory mediator, was also inhibited by L-AHG. L-AHG did not affect the LPS-triggered Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)-mediated pro-inflammatory signaling pathway, which culminated in the activation of transforming growth factor-β-activated kinase 1 (TAK1). However, it was observed to inhibit the generation of reactive oxugen species (ROS) in a dose-dependent manner, as well as the TAK1-driven activation of JNK and p38 MAPK. Given that the active p38 MAPK is known to contribute to the assembly of active nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase, which catalyzes the intracellular generation of pro-inflammatory ROS in LPS-stimulated macrophages, the dose-dependent reduction in the LPS-induced ROS generation by L-AHG may be mainly due to the prevention of TAK1-driven activation of p38 MAPK. Together, these results demonstrate that the L-AHG-mediated inhibition of the TAK1-JNK/p38 MAPK activation phase of the pro-inflammatory signaling pathway in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells by L-AHG represents a promising mechanism for suppressing M1 polarization and pro-inflammatory responses in macrophages.

  • The bacteriological and physiochemical analysis of sea water and sediments in Tongyeong harbor was conducted to evaluate sanitary conditions. The samples were collected at 8 stations established once a month from June, 2008 to May, 2009. During the study period, the range of temperature was from 6.7 to $25.2^{\circ}C$, transparency ranged from 1.2 to 2.6 m, chemical oxygen demand ranged from 1.90 to 2.92 mg/L, dissolved oxygen ranged from 6.2 to 10.5 mg/L, dissolved nitrogen ranged from 0.052 to 0.098 mg/L, phosphate ranged from 0.044 to 0.065 mg/L, respectively. Seafood, if eaten raw, carries the risk of food poisoning. Seafood poisoning is often cause by pathogenic microorganism originating from fecal contamination, such as Salmonella sp., Shigella sp. and norovirus. Fecal coliforms are an important indicator of fecal contamination. Therefore, data on fecal coliform are very important for evaluating the safety of fisheries in coastal areas. So, we investigated the sanitary indicate bacteria. The coliform group and fecal coliform MPN's of sea water in Tongyeong harbor were ranged from < 1.8~22,000/100 mL (GM 164.9 MPN/100 mL) and < 1.8~7,900 MPN/100 mL (GM 33.7 MPN/100 mL), respectively. Total coliform were detected 97.0% in 96 of samples and 68.9% of total coliforms were fecal coliforms. These results similar to another seawater detection ratio of total coloforms and fecal coliforms. The Vibrios was isolated and identified with VITEK system. Four hundred eighty strains that were obtained from sea water samples in Tongyeong harbor Detection ratio Vibrio alginolyticus, 34.2%, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, 13.8%, Vibrio vulnificus 10.0%, and V. mimicus 12.5% respectively. Vibrio cholerae O1, was not detected. During the study period, the ranges of water content, ignition loss, COD, and acid volatile sulfates in sediments in Tongyeoung harbor were 41.0~57.4%, 7.8~10.5%, 6.51~9.30 mg/g, 0.04~0.09 mg/g, respectively. Heavy metals in sediment of Tongyeoung harbor were Cd, $0.10{\pm}0.05$; Cu, $4.79{\pm}8.20$; As, $1.95{\pm}0.17$; Hg, $0.10{\pm}0.07$; $Cr^{6+}$, $0.34{\pm}0.12$; Zn, $125.33{\pm}16.40$; Ni, $16.43{\pm}1.93$ mg/kg.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate photosynthetic responses (Pn), chlorophyll fluorescence (Pe), chlorophyll contents of Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum, Ligularia fischeri, and Ligularia stenocephala growing at four different fertilizing schemes (non-fertilizing and 2.5 $g{\cdot}l^{-1}$, 5 $g{\cdot}l^{-1}$, 10 $g{\cdot}l^{-1}$ fertilizing). Three wild vegetables showed outstanding Pn and Pe at 5 $g{\cdot}l^{-1}$ fertilizing treatment. 10 $g{\cdot}l^{-1}$ of fertilizer, however, proved to be too much eventually leading to declined growth. A. victorialis var. platyphyllum showed good Pn and Pe under shade treatment whereas Pn and Pe of L. fischeri, and L. stenocephala showed the opposite tendency. The chlorophyll contents of the three wild vegetables showed the highest measurement ranging between 11.70~24.36 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ when treated with 5 $g{\cdot}l^{-1}$ of fertilizer. Also it was showed that there were more chlorophyll contents under shade treatment as opposed to full sun. These results showed that 5 $g{\cdot}l^{-1}$ fertilizing treatment is optimal fertilizing of three wild vegetables and fertilizing and light intensity controlling is very important for productivity of vegetables.

  • We investigated the effect of preharvest spray of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) on the fruit quality and incidence of physiological disorders during shelf-life of 'Hanareum' and 'Wonhwang' pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai). AVG applications (0, 75, 150 and $300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) made 30 days before anticipated harvest of respective cultivar. AVG did not influence the fruit development and quality parameters including starch content, soluble solids and acidity at harvest time in two pear cultivars although the flesh firmness of the fruits treated with $300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ AVG were higher than that of control in 'Hanareum' pear. Among the three AVG concentrations, only $300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ AVG showed effectiveness on maintaining flesh firmness in 'Hanareum' pear during shelf-life. Meanwhile, competitive high flesh firmness was attained in 'Wonhwang' pear treated with $150mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ AVG (27.7 N) and $300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ AVG (28.2 N) when compared with untreated control (17.8 N) during 21 days of shelf-life at $25^{\circ}C$. AVG did not cause any significant difference at skin color development relative to control in two pear cultivars. AVG decreased ethylene production and respiration rate at $300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ level in two pear cultivars during the entire shelf-life. During shelf-life, low incidence of physiological disorders including internal and core browning and mealiness were attained in the fruits treated at $300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ AVG in two cultivars when we compared with the untreated control.

  • This study was conducted to improve commercial quality of a cut spray chrysanthemum 'Ilweol' bred in Korea by foliar application of daminozide, suppressing excessive elongation of peduncle caused by high temperature in summer season production. Applications were made at three floral bud developmental stage (I, II, and III), and concentrations used were 0, 500, 1000, and $2000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Cut flower length and peduncle length showed the greatest repression of elongation through daminozide treatments at stage III and stage II, respectively. Daminozide also gradually reduced values of those in a concentration-dependant manner. Flower diameter increased compared to control as daminozide was sprayed at later stage but decreased in daminozide concentration-dependant manner. Angle of flower cluster on apical part of whole plant showed the best results when sprayed with $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ at stage III. Among all combinations, $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide at stage II recorded the highest angle of flower cluster and showed 31.3% increment as compared to control. The number of fully expanded flowers showed the highest values using $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide at stage III than the other treatments and total floral buds also showed the highest values using $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide at stage I than the other treatments. In cut spray chrysanthemum cultivar 'Ilweol' bred in Korea, foliar-applying with $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ at stage III most effectively suppressed excessive peduncle elongation, angle of flower cluster, and increased the number of flowers in summer. However, this combination affected negatively the other commercial qualities, reducing cut flower length and flower diameter. Therefore, we recommended that foliar application stage and daminozide concentration was stage III and $500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, respectively, in a practical culture and cut flower quality for 'Ilweol'.

  • In this study, we examined the effects of Rubus crataegifolius leaf on the inhibition of differentiation and adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes to confirm their potential for use as an anti-obesity functional material. Rubus crataegifolius leaves water extracted using hot water were then concentrated for use, with an extract yield of 4.76%. The result of measuring the rate of 3T3-L1 cell survival of Rubus crataegifolius leaf extract (RCLE) showed growth inhibition of 13% at a concentration of 1,000 ㎍/mL. Thus, in this study, experiments were performed using RCLE treatment concentrations up to 500 ㎍/mL. Production of triglycedie in 3T3-L1 cells showed a dose-dependent decrease, and the rate of reduction was 28.7, 40.8, and 51.6% at concentrations of 100, 300, and 500 ㎍/mL, respectively, compared to the control group. In addition, the results confirmed that suppression of lipogenesis was achieved by suppressing the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPAR γ), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α (C/EBP α), sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), fatty acid synthase (FAS), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), and increasing the expression of p-activated protein kinase (p-AMPK). Based on these results, it is believed that Rubus crataegifolius leaf extract can be used in the effort to manage obesity by regulating factors related to adipocyte differentiation and adipogenesis.

  • One-year-old yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) and sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) seedlings were exposed to 0.10 ${\mu}l/l\;O_3$and simulated acid rain at pH 3.0 for ten consecutive weeks. Shoot height growth (SHG), fresh weight (FWT), dry weight (DWT), apparent plastochron duration (APD) and foliar nutrient concentrations were measured. None of growth measurements, except the apparent plastochron duration (APD), were significantly affected by any treatment in yellow-poplar seedlings. APD was approximately 30% higher in seedlings exposed to $0.1{\mu}l/l\;O_3$ + pH 5.6 solution than any other treatment. Ozone significantly reduced SHG of sweetgum seedlings by 24% at the end of the ten-week fumigation. There were also significant effects of single and combined effects of ozone and simulated acid rain on APD in sweetgum. APD was significantly increased by 19.8% and 25.7% in seedlings exposed to $0.1{\mu}l/l\;O_3$ and pH 5.6 solution, respectively, and resulted in 46.1% higher APD in seedlings exposed to $0.1{\mu}l/l\;O_3$ + pH 5.6 solution compared with seedlings exposed to $0.0{\mu}l/l\;O_3$ + pH 3.0 solution. Phosphorus and sulphur were significantly greater in seedlings exposed to simulated rain at pH 3.0 compared with pH 5.6 for both species. Foliar S concentration was higher in seedlings exposed to $0.0{\mu}l/l\;O_3$ + pH 3.0 than in seedlings exposed to any other treatment in sweetgum. Ozone significantly increased Ca in sweetgum seedlings, however, ozone reduced Ca in yellow-poplar. Ozone also reduced S and Mg in sweetgum seedlings.
