  • A real $m{\times}n$ matrix A is called an L-matrix if every matrix in its qualitative class has linearly independent rows. Since the number of the sign pattern matrices of the given size is finite, we can list all patterns lexicographically. In [2], a necessary and sufficient condition for a matrix to be an L-matrix was given. We presented an algorithm which decides whether the given matrix is an L-matrix or not. In this paper, we develope an algorithm and C-program which will determine whether a given matrix is an L-matrix or not, or an SNS-matrix or not. In addition, we have extended our algorithm to be able to classify sign-pattern matrices, and to find barely L-matrices from a given matrix and to list all $m{\times}n$ L-matrices.

  • 4-Aminopyridine (AP) is a potassium channel blocker used in the treatment of neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer disease. AP‘s window of therapeutic effect appears to correlate with its plasma halflife (3.5 hours). It demonstrates pH-dependent solubility because of a weakly basic drug. In addition, the resulting release from conventional matrix tablets decreases with increasing pH-milieu of the gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this study is to design sustained release matrix tablet containing AP, overcoming this problem. $Eudragit^{\circledR}$ L 100 (EuL) and sodium alginate were used in an effort to achieve pH independent drug release. The effect of sodium alginate and EuL on drug release from matrix tablet was investigated. The drug release behavior from the different tablets was analyzed by $t_{20%},\;t_{40%},\;t_{60%}$, The exponential diffusion coefficient n, kinetic constant K were calculated according to the Korsmeyer-Peppas equation. The drug release from matrix tablets prepared with sodium alginate was decreased with increasing the content of sodium alginate in pH 7.4 while there is no significant difference in pH 1.2. The exponent n values were determined to be approximately 0.5 and 0.8 respectively, in both pH 1.2 and 7.4. These values indicate diffusion-based anomalous mechanism and erosion-based anomalous mechanism, respectively. The drug release from sodium alginate matrix tablets prepared with solid dispersion of EuL containing drug showed a slow drug release in an acidic medium and a more fast drug release in phosphate medium, compared with sodium alginate matrix tablets prepared with physical mixture. These results may be attributed to the gel forming ability of sodium alginate and pH dependent solubility of EuL. Therefore, sustained-release AP matrix tablets using sodium alginate and EuL were successfully prepared.

  • We denote by Q(A) the set of all matrices with the same sign pattern as A. A matrix A is an SN-matrix provided there exists a set S of sign patterns such that the set of sign patterns of vectors in the null-space of A is S, for each A ${\in}$ Q(A). We have a characterization of an SN-matrix related with L-matrix and we analyze the structure of an SN-matrix.

  • Microstructure and morphology of precipitates in $Ni_3Al$- and TiAl-based intermetallics containing carbon have been investigated in terms of transmission electron microscopy(TEM). In an $L1_2$-ordered $Ni_3Al$ alloy with 4 mol.% of chromium and 0.2~3.0 mol.% of carbon, fine octahedral precipitates of $M_{23}C_6$ type carbide were formed in the matrix by aging at temperatures around 973 K after solution annealing at 1423 K. TEM examination revealed that the $M_{23}C_6$ phase and the matrix lattices have a cube-cube orientation relationship and keep partial atomic matching at the {111} interface. After prolonged aging or by aging at higher temperatures, the $M_{23}C_6$ precipitates then adopt a rod-like morphology elongated parallel to the <100> directions. In the $L1_0$-ordered TiAl containing 0.1~2.0 mol.% carbon, TEM observations revealed that needle-like precipitates, which lie only in one direction parallel to the [001] axis of the $L1_0$ matrix, appear in the matrix and preferentially at dislocations. Selected area electron diffraction(SAED) patterns analyses have shown that the needle-shaped precipitate is $Ti_3AlC$ of perovskite type. The orientation relationship between the $Ti_3AlC$ and the $L1_0$ matrix is found to be $(001)_{Ti3AlC}//(001)_{L10\;matrix}$ and $[010]_{Ti3AlC}//[010]_{L10\;matrix}$. By aging at higher temperatures or for longer period at 1073 K, plate-like precipitates of $Ti_2AlC$ with a hexagonal structure are formed on the {111} planes of the $L1_0$ matrix. The orientation relationship between the $Ti_2AlC$ and the $L1_0$ matrix is $(0001)_{Ti2AlC}//(111)_{L10\;matrix}$ and $_{Ti2AlC}//_{L10\;matrix}$.

  • Structural studies have been performed on precipitation hardening and microstructural variations found in Ti-Al-Cr ternary $L1_0$- and $L1_2$-phase alloys using transmission electron microscopy. Both the $L1_0$ and $L1_2$ phase alloys harden by aging at 973 K after solution annealing at higher temperatures. The amount of age hardening of the $L1_2$ phase alloy is larger than that of the $L1_0$ phase alloy. The phase separation between $L1_0$ and $L1_2$ phase have not been observed by aging at 973 K. But $Al_2Ti$ was formed in each matrix alloy during aging. The crystal structure of the $Al_2Ti$ phase is a $Ga_2Zr$ type in the $L1_0$ and a $Ga_2Hf$ type in the $L1_2$ phase, respectively. At the beginning of aging the fine coherent cuboidal $Al_2Ti$-phase are formed in the $L1_0$ phase. By further aging, two variants of $Al_2Ti$ precipitates grow along the two {110} habit planes. On the other hand, in the $L1_2$ phase, the $Al_2Ti$ phase forms on the {100} planes of the $L1_2$ matrix lattice. After prolonged aging the precipitates are rearranged along a preferential direction of the matrix lattice and form a domain consisting of only one variant. It is suggested that the precipitation of $Al_2Ti$ in each matrix alloy occurs to form a morphology which efficiently relaxes the elastic strain between precipitate and matrix lattices.

  • Based on continuum mechanics and the principle of virtual displacements, incremental total Lagrangian formulation (T.L.) and incremental updated Lagrangian formulation (U.L.) were presented. Both T.L. and U.L. considered the large displacement stiffness matrix, which was modified to be symmetrical matrix. According to the incremental updated Lagrangian formulation, small strain, large displacement, finite rotation of three dimensional Timoshenko fiber beam element tangent stiffness matrix was developed. Considering large displacement and finite rotation, a new type of tangent stiffness matrix of the beam element was developed. According to the basic assumption of plane section, the displacement field of an arbitrary fiber was presented in terms of nodal displacement of centroid of cross-area. In addition, shear deformation effect was taken account. Furthermore, a nonlinear finite element method program has been developed and several examples were tested to demonstrate the accuracy and generality of the three dimensional beam element.

  • The HDD (hard disk drive) using Load/Unload (L/UL) technology includes the benefits which are increased areal density, reduced power consumption and improved shock resistance than those of contact-start-stop (CSS). Dynamic L/UL has been widely used in portable hard disk drive and will become the key technology for developing the small form factor hard disk drive. Main design objectives of the L/UL mechanisms are no slider-disk contact or no media damage even with contact during L/UL, and a smooth and short load and unload process. In this paper, we focus on state matrix, pitch static attitude (PSA), roll static attitude (RSA), loading/unloading contour (LC/ULC), impact force and contact. Stability of slider is mainly determined by PSA and RSA. State matrix by PSA and RSA is also important indicator. Therefore we analyze state matrix of SFF HDD suspension through the LC/ULC.

  • The output of Stirling engine is influenced by the regenerator effectiveness. The regenerator effectiveness is influenced by heat transfer and flow friction loss of the regenerator matrix. In this paper, in order to provide a basic data for the design of regenerator matrix, characteristics of heat transfer and flow friction loss were investigated by a packed method of matrix in the oscillating flow as the same condition of operation in a Stirling engine. As matrices, 6 kinds of steel wires, 4 kinds of combined steel wires, 8 kinds of combined steel wires with screen meshes were used. The results are summarized as follows; Among 6 kinds of steel wires $({\phi}0.7\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9\;mm,\;{\phi}1.2\;mm,\;{\phi}\;1.6\;mm,\;{\phi}2.0\;mm,\;{\phi}2.7\;mm),$ the two steel wires $({\phi}0.7\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9\;mm)$ showed the highest in effectiveness. Among 4 kinds of combined steel wires $({\phi}l.6-{\phi}l.2\;mm,\;{\phi}1.2-{\phi}l.6\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9-{\phi}l.2\;mm,\;{\phi}l.2-{\phi}0.9\;mm),\;the\;{\phi}1.2-{\phi}0.9\;mm$ showed the highest in effectiveness. • The effect of carbon addition on the microstructures and mechanical properties of $Ni_3Al$ and TiAl intermetallic alloys have been characterized. It is shown that carbon is not only an efficient solid solution strengthener in $Ni_3Al$ and TiAl, it is also an efficient precipitation strengthener by fine dispersion of carbide. Transmission electron microscope investigation has been performed on the particle-dislocation interactions in $Ni_3Al$ and TiAl intermetallics containing various types of fine precipitates. In an $L1_2$-ordered $Ni_3Al$ alloy with 4 mol.% of chromium and 0.2~3.0 mol.% of carbon, fine octahedral precipitates of $M_{23}C_6$ type carbide, which has the cube-cube orientation relationship with the matrix, appear during aging. Typical Orowan loops are formed in $Ni_3Al$ containing fine dispersions of $M_{23}C_6$ particles. In the L10-ordered TiAl containing 0.1~2.0 mol.% carbon, TEM observations revealed that needle-like precipitates, which lie only in one direction parallel to the [001] axis of the $L1_0$ matrix, appear in the matrix and preferentially at dislocations. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns analyses have shown that the needle-shaped precipitate is $Ti_3AlC$ of perovskite type. The orientation relationship between the $(0001)_{Ti2AlC}//(111)_{L10\;matrix}$ is and $[1120]_{Ti2AlC}//[101]_{L10\;matrix}$. High temperature strength of TiAl increases appreciably by the precipitation of fine carbide. Dislocations bypass the carbide needles at further higher temperatures.

  • The free distance of (n, k, l) convolutional codes has some connection with the memory length, which depends on not only l but also on k. To efficiently obtain a large memory length, we have constructed a new class of (2k, k, l) convolutional codes by (2k, k) block codes and (2, 1, l) convolutional codes, and its encoder and generation function are also given in this paper. With the help of some matrix modules, we designed a single structure Viterbi decoder with a parallel capability, obtained a unified and efficient decoding model for (2k, k, l) convolutional codes, and then give a description of the decoding process in detail. By observing the survivor path memory in a matrix viewer, and testing the role of the max module, we implemented a simulation with (2k, k, l) convolutional codes. The results show that many of them are better than conventional (2, 1, l) convolutional codes.
