Considering the wide coverage, the transparency from climate condition, Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) possesses a great potential for the landcover classification as shown in many precedent researches. In addition to the merits of InSAR products for the landcover classification, the time series analysis of InSAR pairs can provide a highly reliable basis to interpret landcover. We applied such idea with the test site in Mountain Baekdu located on the border between North Korea and China. Since it is recently noted as the potential volcanic activation site, the landcover especially the vegetation distribution information is highly essential to validate the reliability of Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) over Mt. Baekdu. The algorithms combining the auxiliary information from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) to analyze the phase coherence and backscatter coefficient of Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) was established. The results using InSAR signatures from two polarization modes of ALOS PALSAR showed high reliability for mining landcover and spatial distribution.
This paper proposes a new decomposition technique for polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. This new decomposition technique is based on the degree of polarization (DoP) and co-polarized phase-difference (CPD) of the measured polarimetric backscattering coefficients. This decomposition technique is compared with the existing three- and four-component decomposition techniques with the ALOS PALSAR full polarimetric L-band data acquired in 2009. It is shown that the new decomposition technique is better or comparable to the existing techniques for the study areas such as sea, bare soil, forest, and urban area.
The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data are considered to contain the greatest amount of information among various microwave techniques developed for measuring ocean variables from aircraft or satellites. They have the potential of measuring wavelength, wave direction and wave height of the ocean waves. But, it is difficult to retrieve significant ocean wave heights and surface current from conventional SAR data, since the imaging mechanism of ocean waves by a SAR is determined by the three basic modulation processes arise through the tilt modulation, hydrodynamic modulation and velocity bunching which are poorly known functions. Along-Track Interferometric (ATI) SAR systems can directly detect the Doppler shift associated with each pixel of a SAR image and have been used to estimate wave fields and surface currents. However, the Doppler shift is not simply proportional to the component of the mean surface current. It includes also contributions associated with the phase velocity of the Brags waves and orbital motions of all ocean waves that are longer than Brags waves. In this paper, we have developed a new method for extracting the surface current vector using multiple-frequency (L- & C-band) ATI SAR data, and have generated surface wave height information.

In 1996, Thailand's participation in the Pacific Rim as a part of NASA's Mission to Planet Earth (MTPE) Program, was titled 'AIRSAR Thailand Project'. In this project the Department of Land Development utilized Topographic SAR (TOPSAR) which had multi-frequencies: C band, L band, and P band with multi-polarization: HH, VV, and HV as well as C band VV DEM. Satellite data such as LANDSAT TM was also utilized for optimal use. Results of AIRSAR image processing including data fusion among difference wavelength bands and polarization revealed the quality of AIRSAR that best suit for detection of agricultural land uses. The HH-L band AIRSAR was proven to be useful to distinguish among crop types when combined with appropriate data. The HH, VV, and HV-P band enhanced surface characteristics of swamp forest and wetland. In addition, TOPSAR has its great advantage for identification of salt farms and shrimp ponds.
Oyster fanning structures in tidal flats are well detected by SAR system. Each frame of these artificial structures is composed of two vertical and one horizontal wooden pole. We investigate characteristics of polarimetric features in the target structures. In this paper, the results of AIRSAR L-band POLSAR data and experiments in laboratory are discussed. The ratio of single bounce to double bounce scattering depends of vertical pole height, direction of horizontal pole to radar look direction, and incidence angle as well as sea surface condition. We have conducted laboratory experiments. According to target scale, Ku-band and targets downsized by scale of 10 are used. The results of the experiments are summarized as: i) total power of the backscattering is more affected by vertical poles than a horizontal pole; ii) and backscattering from a horizontal pole is sensitive to the relative radar look direction to target array. We conclude that water level can be effectively measured by using interferometric phase and backscattering intensity if vertical poles in the water are observed by L-band HH- or VV-polarization. Measurement of tide height can be further improved if double bounced components are separated from fully polarized SAR data.

The JERS-1 is an Earth Resources Satellite launched by NASDA (Natinal Space Development Agency) of Japan, in February in 1992 and has two sensors; SAR(L-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar) and OPS (SWIR and VNIR radiometers). In this research note, the basic properties and data characteristics of the SAR data are summarized based on the observations made on the data sets received for the Nahanni Canadian test site, Northwest Territories. The JERS-1 SAR data quality. including the spatial resolution of the data, is, in general, excellent for most geological applications.

In this thesis, a new broadband PIFA(Planar Inverted-F Antenna) for PCS and IMP-2000 applications is designed. The dual-L antenna structure is adopted in order to improve the characteristics of PIFA which usually has a narrow band. The height of the antenna is fixed 6 mm considering terminal's thickness and the structure is deformed into the folded radiation patches to minimize the size of the antenna. The bandwidth of a realized antenna is 1.66∼2.35 ㎓(34.5 %) fur return loss below -10 ㏈ which contain the required bandwidth of PCS and IMT-2000. And Monopole antenna with λ/4 length is designed and compared with dual-L with folded patch in SAR. 1 g and 10 g averaged peak SAR of PIFA are about 25.7 %, 30.3 % lower than those of monopole antenna respectively.
To assess the flood damages and to provide necessary information for preventing future catastrophe, it is necessary to appraise the inundated area with more accurate and rapid manner. This study attempts to evaluate the potential of satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data for mapping of flood inundated area in southern part of Korea. JERS L-band SAR data obtained during the summer of 1997 were used to delineate the inundated areas. In addition, Landsat TM data were also used for analyzing the land cover condition before the flooding. Once the two data sets were co-registered, each data was separately classified. The water surface areas extracted from the SAR data and the land cover map generated using the TM data were overlaid to determine the flood inundated areas. Although manual interpretation of water surfaces from the SAR image seems rather simple, the computer classification of water body requires clear understanding of radar backscattering behavior on the earth's surfaces. It was found that some surface features, such as rice fields, runaway, and tidal flat, have very similar radar backscatter to water surface. Even though satellite SAR data have a great advantage over optical remote sensor data for obtaining imagery on time and would provide valuable information to analyze flood, it should be cautious to separate the exact areas of flood inundation from the similar features.
Oil spills are a principal factor of the ocean pollution. The complicated problems involved in detecting oil spills are usually due to varying wind and sea surface condition such as ocean wave and current. The Hebei Spirit accident was happened in the west sea ($36^{\circ}$41'04" N, $126^{\circ}$03'12" E) near about 8 km distant from Tae-An, Korea on December 7, 2007. The aim of this work is to improve the detection and classification performance in order to define a more accurate training set and identifying the feature of oil spill region. This paper deals with an optimization technique for the detection and classification scheme using multi-frequency and multi-polarization SAR and optical image data sets of the oil spilled sea. The used image data are the ENVISAT ASAR WS and Radarsat-1 of C-band and ALOS PALSAR of L-band SAR data and KOMPSAT-2 optical images together with meteorological or oceanographic data. Both the theory and the experimental results obtained are discussed.
A novel phased array antenna system for space-borne polarimetric SAR is proposed and completed in this paper. The antenna system assures polarimetric and multi-mode capability of SAR. It has broadband, high polarization isolation and high port to port isolation. The antenna system is composed of broadband polarimetric microstrip antenna, T/R modules and multifunction beam controller nit. The polarimetric microstrip antenna has more than 100MHz bandwidth at L-band with -30dB polarization isolation and high port to port isolation. The microstrip element and T/R module's structure and characteristics, the subarray's performances measuring results are presented in detail in this paper. A design scheme on beam controller of the phased array antenna is also proposed and completed, which is based on Digital Signal Processing (DSP) chip -TMS320F206. This beam controller unit has small size and high reliability compared with general beam controller. In addition, the multifunction beam controller unit can acquire and then send the T/R module's working states to detection system in real time.
