  • C-band pumping effect appears in L-band EDFA because the absorption in C-band occurs dominant under the condition of such a low average population inversion. In this paper, we show how the C-band pumping effect depends on 980nm pump power, the C-band wavelength, and its input power. The C-band pumping is caused by absorbing C-band injection or backward spontaneous emission power through EDF. If the same small signal condition is given by a C-band pump, the C-band pump of a long wavelength is good for the saturation and noise characteristics of L-band signal. Finally, it is considered that in the aspect of saturation characteristics, C-band compensation is not so much efficient as L-band in Gain-Clamped L-band EDFA having a lossy resonator.

  • 1530nm band has been studied as pump wavelength for long-wavelength-band erbium-doped fiber amplifier (L-band EDFA). The pump source is built using a tunable light source and cascaded conventional-band (C-band) EDFA. The L-band EDFA uses a forward pumping scheme. Within the 1530nm band, 1545nm pump demonstrates 0.45dB/mW gain coefficient, which is twice better than that of conventional 1480nm pumped EDFA. The noise figure of 1530nm pump is at worst 6.36dB, which is 0.75dB higher than that of 1480nm pumped EDFA. Such high gain coefficient indicates that the L-band EDFA consumes low power.

  • The position and time errors of a conventional L1-band GPS receiver (1575.42MHz) are known to be about 100 m and 70 ns, respectively. These errors are mainly due to the propagation delay of GPS satellite signals through ionosphere. Various L1/L2 dual-band GPS receivers are normally used to compensate for those position and time errors by detecting an accurate propagation delay. These receivers detect the propagation delay difference between the L1 and L2 signals based on the fact that the propagation delay through ionosphere is dependent on frequency and, from which, calculate an accurate propagation delay of the GPS signals through ionosphere. In this paper, we analyzed the architecture of a L1/L2 dual-band CPS receiver by high-level simulations with Synopsys's COSSAP Tool.

  • This paper presents a multi-phase ring VCO for low-cost, low-power GPS receiver. In the RF band used in GPS, L1 band is now in commercial-use and L2,L5 are predicting to be commercial-use soon. Thus Wide band PLL and Cost-effective IC solutions are required for future multi-band GPS receiver that received three types band at once. A new PLL architecture for multi-band GPS application is proposed. Ring VCO is even smaller than LC-VCO and a good alternative for low-cost solution. Proposed multi-phase ring VCO offers wide frequency range covering L1, L2, and L5 band, 20% reduction of area, 23% reduction of PLL power and can generate I/Q without extra I/Q generator.

  • The spatial variability of the L- and C- band large scale remotely sensed soil moisture data, obtained during the Southern Great Plain 1999 Experiment (SGP'99), was characterized. The results demonstrate that soil moisture data using L-band show the break in statistical symmetry (multiscaling behavior) with the variation of scale of observation, which is similar to that of the soil property such as sand content. Also, soil moisture data using C-band show single scaling behavior with the variation of scale of observation, which is similar to that of the vegetation condition. The results should be considered during downscaling the Global soil moisture data using AMSR instrument.

  • The performance of a long wavelength-band erbium-doped fiber amplifier (L-band EDFA) using 1530nm-band pumping has been studied. A 1530nm-band pump source is built using a tunable light source and two C-band EDFAs in cascaded configuration, which is able to deliver a maximum output power of 23dBm. Gain coefficient and noise figure (NF) of the L-band EDFA are measured for pump wavelengths between 1530nm and 1560nm. The gain coefficient with a 1545nm pump is more than twice as large as with a 1480nm pump. It indicates that the L-band EDFA consumes low power. The noise figure of 1530nm pump is 6.36dB at worst, which is 0.75dB higher than that of 1480nm pumped EDFA. The optimum pump wavelength range to obtain high gain and low NF in the 1530nm band appears to be between 1530nm and 1540nm. Gain spectra as a function of a pump wavelength have bandwidth of more than 10nm so that a broadband pump source can be used as 1530nm-band pump. The L-band EDFA is also tested for WDM signals. Flat Gain bandwidth is 32nm from 1571.5 to 1603.5nm within 1dB excursion at input signal of -10dBm/ch. These results demonstrate that 1530nm-band pump can be used as a new efficient pump source for L-band EDFAs.

  • Soil moisture plays an important role in the land-atmosphere energy balance because it governs the partitioning of energy through latent heat fluxes or evapotranspiration. From the numerous studies, it is evident that the L-band radiometer is a useful and effective tool to measure soil moisture. The objective of the study is to develop and to verify the soil moisture retrieval algorithms for the L-band radiometer system. Through the radiometer-observed brightness temperature, surface emissivity and reflectivity can be derived, and, hence, soil moisture. We collect field and L-band airborne radiometer data from washita92, SGP97 and SGP99 experiments to assist the development of the retrieval algorithms. Upon launching the satellite L-band radiometer such as ESA-sponsored SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission, the developed algorithms may be used to study and monitor globe soil moisture change.

  • 정확한 유역 토양수분 정보는 홍수 예측의 정도를 크게 향상시키므로 공간 토양수분 정보를 획득하기 위하여 선진국에서는 위성 영상을 활용하여 토양수분을 관측하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 유럽우주기구 ESA(European Space Agency)에서 운영하는 SMOS(Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) L-band 토양수분 관측치와 일본 우주항공 연구개발 기구 JAXA(Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency)에서 운영하는 GCOM-W1 위성의 AMSR2(Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2) C-band 토양수분 자료를 비교 분석하였다.

  • We have designed an extended L-band Erbium-doped fiber amplifier to amplify 1625 nm optical time domain reflectometry signal for a long distance monitoring system. The proposed amplifier has a dual-stage structure without an isolator. Gain improvement of 5.1 dB has been achieved by adding a fiber Bragg grating and a narrow band pass filter. As a result, the 16.3 dB gain and 7.1 dB noise figure has been successfully accomplished.

  • In this paper, we propose a quadruple band antenna for GPS/WLAN/WiMAX application. The proposed antenna has quadruple band characteristics by considering the interconnection of four strip lines and DGS on the ground place. The total substrate size is 20.0 mm (W1) ⨯27.0 mm (L1), thickness (h) 1.0 mm, and the dielectric constant is 4.4, which is made of 20.0 mm (W2)⨯ 27.0 mm (L8 + L6+ L10) antenna size on the FR-4 substrate. From the fabrication and measurement results, bandwidths of 60 MHz (1.525 to 1.585 GHz) bandwidth for GPS band, 825 MHz (3.31 to 4.135 GHz) bandwidth for WiMAX band and 480 MHz (2.395 to 2.975 GHz) and 385 MHz (5.10 to 5.485 GHz) bandwidth for WLAN band were obtained on the basis of -10 dB. Also, gain and radiation pattern characteristics are measured and shown in the frequency of triple band as required.
