  • This study was conducted to compare the root weight, yield, quality of fresh and red ginseng roots and crude saponin content in roots between fixing light transmittance(Control) and changing light transmittance(C.L.T.) during the ginseng growing seasons. The root weight in C.L.T. was higher than control by $35{\%}$ in early growth stage, $28{\%}$ in middle growth stage and $26{\%}$ in late growth stage in 6 years old ginseng plant. Root yield per 10a in C.L.T. was increased about $40{\%}$ as compared with that of control, also 1st and 2nd grade of fresh ginseng roots in C.L.T. was higher $(50.3{\%})$ compared with that $(12.9{\%})$ of control. The specific gravity of ginseng roots grown under the C.L.T. was exhibited the significant difference than control during the growing season in 4 and 6 years old ginseng plants. Red ginseng quality in C.L.T. was not only improved remarkably due to the increasement of heaven and earth grade red ginseng but also increased in crude saponin content than control. Therefore it needs to change the light transmittance(increasing light during low temperature periods and decreasing light during high temperature period) during the growing season for high yield and good qualities of ginseng roots.

  • We developed a novel polarization filter to separate linearly polarized waves from elliptically polarized waves in an infinite homogeneous medium and at the free surface using methods of multicomponent complex trace analysis. Sensitivity to filter parameters were examined using synthetic data simulating particle motions in a homogeneous medium. For known amplitude ratios of horizontal-to-vertical components of P and Rayleigh waves $C_L$ and $C_R$, respectively, the polarization filter precisely removes Rayleigh waves. Errors in the vertical and horizontal components of the filtered results increase with the ratio $C_R$/$C_L$ and the product $C_R$.$C_L$, respectively. The vertical component errors also increase rapidly as the ratios of applied-to-modeled values of $C_L$ and $C_R$ ($C_L'$/$C_L$ and $C_R'$/$C_R$) decrease, and are sensitive to $C_R'$/$C_R$ and $C_L'$/$C_L$ for small and large incidence angles, respectively. Errors of the filter are exactly the same for shear waves when the incidence angle is the supplementary of P-wave incidence angle.

  • The respiratory characteristics of Korean fresh ginseng were investigated from the aspect of picking season, size, and storage temperature and period to get basic data for extension of shelf-life. The respiration rate of fresh ginseng picked in March was 4.09 mL $CO_2/kg{\cdot}hr$ at $0^{\circ}C$. It was gradually increased to August, 7.88 mL $CO_2/kg{\cdot}hr$ at $0^{\circ}C$, and then decreased continuously until November. Although the rate of fresh ginseng was different by picking season, the respiration quotient showed the same level, $1.03\~1.07$. Respiration rate by size was ranged from 3.47 to 5.69 mL $CO_2/kg{\cdot}hr$ at $0^{\circ}C$, and smaller in the size was higher in the rate. $Q_{10}$ value of fresh ginseng was $2.68\~2.88$ when the temperature increased from $0^{\circ}C\;to\;10^{\circ}C$ and $1.77\~2.16$ from $10^{\circ}C\;to\;20^{\circ}C$, and it was slightly different by picking season. At the beginning of storage the respiration rate was 7.0 mL $CO_2/kg{\cdot}hr$ and it was .decreased to 3.38 mL $CO_2/kg{\cdot}hr$ after storage for 90 days at $0^{\circ}C$.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum ethanol extraction conditions for maximum extraction of functional components such as ferulic acid, oryzanol, and toopherol from black rice bran using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). A central composite design was applied to investigate the effects of the independent variables of solvent ratio ($X_{1}$), extraction temperature ($X_{2}$) and extraction time ($X_{3}$) on the dependent variables such as total phenol components ($Y_{1}$), total flavonoids compounds ($Y_{2}$), electron donating ability ($Y_{3}$), $\gamma$-oryzanol ($Y_{4}$), ferulic acid ($Y_{5}$) and $\alpha$-toopherol components ($Y_{6}$). ANOVA results showed that coefficients of determination (R-square) of estimated models for dependent variables ranged from 0.8939 to 0.9470. It was found that solvent ratio and extraction temperature were the main effective factors in this extraction proess. Particularly, the extraction efficiency of ferulic acid, $\gamma$-oryzanol and $\alpha$-toopherol components were significantly affected by extraction temperature. As a result, optimum extraction conditions were 20.35 mL/g of solvent ratio, 79.4$^{\circ}C$ of extraction temperature and 2.88 hr of extraction time. Predicted values at the optimized conditions were acceptable when compared with experimental values.

  • Anthers of two hot pepper cultivars, Milyang-jare and Geryongsan-jare, were cultured on MS medium containing 0.1 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.1 mg/L kinetin. The influence of pretreatment at 4$^{\circ}C$ and 32$^{\circ}C$ on induction of microspore embryo was investigated. Milyang-jare was superior to the Geryongsan-jare in microspore embryo induction. The 32$^{\circ}C$ pretreatment increased embryo induction compared to the 4$^{\circ}C$ pretreatment while the 4$^{\circ}C$ pretreatment stimulated callus induction. Microspore embryos were regenerated to plantlets in the same medium or hormone free medium at 32$^{\circ}C$ treatment but most embryos failed to develop directly into plantlets at 4$^{\circ}C$ treatment. The optimal period of the 32$^{\circ}C$ pretreatment was 3 days in Milyang-jare and 6 days in Geryongsan-jare. The 32$^{\circ}C$ pretreatment was essential for induction and growth of microspore embryo in pepper.

  • To study the optimum conditions of composing with sewage sludge, the variations of temperature and $CO_2$ generation amount during composting periods were investigated. The conditions were that sewage sludge added to bulking agents such as sawdust and rice hull were used and differently treated with microorganism seeding or not, initial C/N ratio, air flow rate and initial moisture contents. The results were summarized as follows : Seeding of 5% microorganism was higher temperature than not seeding. And using rice hull as bulking agents, and adjusting 21${\sim}$22 of initial C/N ratio, $200ml/l\;{\cdot}\;min$. of air flow rate and 64${\sim}$65% of initial moisture contents were higher temperature than any other conditions. Seeding of 5% microorganism was more $CO_2$ generation amount than not seeding. And using saw dust was more $CO_2$ generation amount than using rice hull as bulking agents. In the case of initial C/N ratio, adjusting 21${\sim}$42 was also more $CO_2$ generation amount than adjusting 12${\sim}$14. Judging from the result, it should be considered that the optimum conditions of composting with sewage sludges were seeding of 5% microorganism and adjusting 21${\sim}$22 of initial C/N ratio, $200ml/l\;{\cdot}\;min$. of air flow rate and 64${\sim}$65% of initial moisture contents.

  • In the study, superconducting properties of $Bi_2$-x(sub)$LSr_2$Ca(sub)1+x(sub)$LCu_2$O(sub)8+d (x(sub)L=0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2) films prepared by the LPE method was investigated. The peak decompositions of Sr3d and Ca2p XPS spectra, together with the EPMA results, elucidated the occupancies of Bi, Sr and Ca atoms on the SrO- and Ca-layers. The lattice parameter c monotonically increased with increasing x(sub)L for $0\leq$x(sub)L$\leq$0.2. The superconducting critical temperature T(sub)c showed a maximum value around x(sub)L=0.1. The x(sub)L dependence of the superconducting critical temperature T(sub)c and the lattice parameter c are explained by the changes of the excess oxygens in the BiO-layer. Since distribution and deficiency of the atoms in SrO-layer have influenced on superconducting properties and crystal structure.

  • Background: Several studies have demonstrated that conventional hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) causes cellular injury, abnormal responses in peripheral vascular beds and increased postoperative bleeding, whereas normothermic CPB provides protection of the hypothermic-induced effects and better cardiac recovery. The present study was prospectively performed to compare the effects of normothermic CPB to those of hypothermic CPB on the inflammatory and hematologic responses during cardiac surgery. Material and Method: Thirty-four adult patients scheduled for elective cardiac surgery were randomly assigned to hypothermic CPB (nasopharyngeal temperature $26~28^{\circ}C,$ n=17) or normothermic CPB (nasopharyngeal $temperature>35.5^{\circ}C,$ n=17) group. In both groups, cold $(4^{\circ}C)$ crystalloid cardioplegia was applied for myocardial protection. Blood samples were drawn from radial artery before (Pre-CPB), 10 minutes after starting (CPB-10) and immediately after ending (CPB-OFF) CPB. Total leukocyte and platelet counts, interleukin-6 (IL-6) level(expressed as percent to the baseline of Pre-CPB), D-dimer level, protein C and protein S activity were measured with the blood samples. The amount of bleeding for postoperative 24 hours and blood transfusion after operation were also assessed. All parameters were compared between the two groups. Result: The total leukocyte counts $(10,032\pm65/mm^3)$ and the increased ratio of IL-6 $(353\pm7.0%)$ at CPB-OFF in the normothermic group were higher than that $(7,254\pm48/mm^3$ and $298\pm7.3%)$ of the hypothermic group(p=0.02 and p=0.03). In the normothermic group, protein C activity $(32\pm3.8%)$ and protein S activity $(35\pm4.1%)$ at CPB-OFF were significantly lower than that $(45\pm4.3%$ and $51\pm3.8%)$ of the hypothermic group (p=0.04 and p=0.009). However, there were no differences in platelet counts and D-dimer concentration. In the normothermic group, the amount of bleeding for postoperative 24 hours $(850\pm23.2$ mL) and requirements for blood transfusion after operation such as packed cell $(1,402\pm20.5$ mL), fresh frozen plasma $(970\pm20.8$ mL) and platelet $(252\pm6.4$ mL) were higher than that $(530\pm21.5$ mL, $696\pm15.7$ mL, $603\pm18.2$ mL and $50\pm0.0$ mL) of the hypothermic group. Conclusion: These results indicate that normothermic CPB with cold crystalloid cardioplegia was associated with higher increase in inflammatory response, hemostatic abnormalities and postoperative bleeding problem than moderate hypothermic CPB.
