  • In this paper, we propose a block-based low-power complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor (CIS) with a simple pixel structure for power efficiency. This method, which uses an additional computation circuit, makes it possible to reduce the power consumption of the pixel array. In addition, the computation circuit for a block-based CIS is very flexible for various types of pixel structures. The proposed CIS was designed and fabricated using a standard CMOS 0.18 ${\mu}m$ process, and the performance of the fabricated chip was evaluated. From a resultant image, the proposed block-based CIS can calculate a differing contrast in the block and control the operating voltage of the unit blocks. Finally, we confirmed that the power consumption in the proposed CIS with a simple pixel structure can be reduced.

  • Neurolymphomatosis, an uncommon manifestation of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, is lymphomatous infiltration of peripheral nerves. We confirmed the diagnosis of neurolymphomatosis in a 75-year old woman with a history of complete remission of diffuse large B cell type lymphoma on the nasal cavity seven years ago. She complained of painful weakness of left leg and took the electrophysiologic study, extremity ultrasonography, fluorodeoxyglucose PET-CT, and extremity MRI serially. She was diagnosed as neurolymphomatosis by targeted posterior tibial nerve mass biopsy.

  • Sixty-seven isolates of bacterial spot pathogen (Xanthomonas spp.) collected from six provinces of Korea were tested for the identification of their pathotypes and determination of their distribution throughout Korea in an effort to genetically manage the disease. Near isogenic lines of Early Calwonder (Capsicum annuum) pepper plants carrying $Bs_1$, $Bs_2$ and $Bs_3$, and PI235047 (C. pubescens) were used as differential hosts. Race P1 was found to be predominant, followed by race P7, and races P3 and P8 were also observed. This is the first report of races P7 and P8 in Korea. The races P7 and P8 were differentiated from the former races P1 and P3, respectively, on the basis of their ability to elicit hypersensitive reactions to PI235047.

  • Muscular lesion was detected in a 23-month-old castrated bull encountered at Kyungsan slaughter house. The lesion appeared as fat intervening muscle fibers. The affected animal had no clinical signs. On microscopic examination, there was replacement of many muscle fibers by normal fat cells. Numerous fat cells were located between muscle fibers. Remaining skeletal muscle cells were in degenerative process, and thus abnormal skeletal muscle cells had loose fibers while normal had intact ones. The advent of inflammatory cells is not at the lesion, which is unique view in steatosis.

  • We evaluated 85 cases with atrophy of left lobe among 11,133 cases performed liver scan using $^{99m}Tc-phytate$ from January 1984 to January 1990 at Kyungpook National University Hospital in association with underlying causes and related conditions. Seventeen cases seemed to be due to biliary tract diseases, eg, cholelithiasis, cholangiocarcinoma, clonorchiasis and postcholecystectomy state. Fifteen cases were patients with primary and metastatic hepatic malignancies. One case had a history of hepatic irradiation. Thirty cases comprised acute hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and fatty liver. However no causative abnormalities could be detected in 22 cases despite of meticulous diagnostic work-up.

  • Administration of autologous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has been shown to improve renal function and histological findings in acute kidney injury (AKI) models. However, its effects in chronic kidney disease (CKD) are unclear, particularly in the clinical setting. Here, we report our experience with a CKD patient who was treated by intravenous infusion of autologous MSCs derived from adipose tissue in an unknown clinic outside of Korea. The renal function of the patient had been stable for several years before MSC administration. One week after the autologous MSC infusion, the preexisting renal insufficiency was rapidly aggravated without any other evidence of AKI. Hemodialysis was started 3 months after MSC administration. Renal biopsy findings at dialysis showed severe interstitial fibrosis and inflammatory cell infiltration, with a few cells expressing CD34 and CD117, 2 surface markers of stem cells. This case highlights the potential nephrotoxicity of autologous MSC therapy in CKD patients.

  • Various endocrine dysfunctions occur during chemotherapy, including hypoglycemia. However, reports of hypoglycemia associated with 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) are rare. Herein, we report an 8-year-old boy with severe symptomatic hypoglycemia likely due to 6-MP during chemotherapy. He had been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia 3 years previously and was in the maintenance chemotherapy period. Treatment included oral dexamethasone, methotrexate, and 6-MP, of which only 6-MP was administered daily. Hypoglycemic symptoms appeared mainly at dawn, and his serum glucose dropped to a minimum of 37 mg/dL. Laboratory findings showed nothing specific other than increased serum cortisol, free fatty acids, ketone, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase. Under the hypothesis of hypoglycemia due to chemotherapy drugs, we changed the time of 6-MP from evening to morning and recommended him to ingest carbohydrate-rich foods before bedtime. Hypoglycemia improved dramatically, and there was no further episode during the remaining maintenance chemotherapy period. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of this type of hypoglycemia occurring in an Asian child including Korean.

  • Trichoblastic carcinoma usually occurs as a malignant transformation of the trichoblastoma, but is very rare. A 25-year-old man was admitted with trichoblastoma in the nuchal area with frequent recurrences since birth. The preoperative neck magnetic resonance image revealed lobulated soft tissue lesions involving superficial fascia and infiltrating into both proximal trapezius muscles. In our department, wide excision and reconstruction with a free anterolateral thigh flap were performed. Histological examination revealed skin adnexal carcinoma, originating from the hair follicles, consistent with trichoblastic carcinoma. There was no palpable mass 5 years postoperatively, and there was no recurrence on follow-up positron emission tomography-computed tomography. Trichoblastic carcinomas are rare and difficult to diagnose, but histopathological findings include atypical basaloid keratinocytes with crowded, hyperchromatic nuclei, and increased mitotic activity. The presence of hypercellular stroma is a criterion for distinguishing trichoblastic carcinoma from basal cell carcinoma. A rare giant trichoblastic carcinoma was reported, which was the biggest one in the literature.

  • A complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) binary image sensor is proposed for low-power and low-noise operation. The proposed binary image sensor has the advantages of reduced power consumption and fixed pattern noise (FPN). A gate/body-tied (GBT) p-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (PMOSFET)-type photodetector is used as the proposed CMOS binary image sensor. The GBT PMOSFET-type photodetector has a floating gate that amplifies the photocurrent generated by incident light. Therefore, the sensitivity of the GBT PMOSFET-type photodetector is higher than that of other photodetectors. The proposed CMOS binary image sensor consists of a pixel array with $394(H){\times}250(V)$ pixels, scanners, bias circuits, and column parallel readout circuits for binary image processing. The proposed CMOS binary image sensor was analyzed by simulation. Using the dynamic comparator, a power consumption reduction of approximately 99.7% was achieved, and this performance was verified by the simulation by comparing the results with those of a two-stage comparator. Also, it was confirmed using simulation that the FPN of the proposed CMOS binary image sensor was successfully reduced by use of the double sampling process.

  • The dog with tetraplegia was presented for magnetic resonance imaging and cervical ventral slot decompression. Intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) was measured every hour after surgery, along with respiratory rate, heart rate, and arterial pressure. Three hours after surgery, abdominal distension with agitation and respiratory distress were observed, and IAP rose to 12 mmHg, indicating mild intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH). Additional fentanyl and ketamine CRI did not alleviate IAH and acepromazine (0.01 mg/kg, IV) was administered to alleviate the agitation and respiratory distress. After acepromazine administration, the agitation subsided and IAP dropped to 4 mmHg. During the next 24 hours, the patient's vital signs and IAP remained stable, with normal urine output. This case report suggests the possibility of postoperative IAH monitoring in dogs. However, considering the nature of a single surgical case of cervical ventral slot, further study is required for indication of IAH monitoring.
