  • In this study, we investigated pesticide residues in 207 agricultural products distributed by direct trade in the northern area of Gyeonggi Province. A total of 94 general agricultural products and 113 eco-friendly agricultural products collected from local grocers and cooperative stores were analyzed by multiresidue method for 263 pesticides using GC (gas chromatography)/ECD (electron capture detector), GC/NPD (nitrogen phosphorus detector), GC-MS/MS (tandem mass spectrometry), LC (liquid chromatography)/PDA (photodiode array detector), LC/FLD (fluorescence detector), LC-MS/MS. All samples showing pesticide residues were general agricultural products collected from local food stores. The pesticide residue levels of 14 samples (6.8%) were below the maximum residue limits (MRLs) and one of them (0.5%) exceeded the MRLs. Sixteen pesticides were detected from samples of the following produce items: spinach, young cabbage, perilla leaves, mallow, cucumber, chives and water dropwort. The safety of the detected pesticides was assessed by monitoring the daily intake estimate (EDI) and the daily intake allowance (ADI) based on the amount of pesticides detected. The ADI percentage range (the ratio of EDI to ADI) was 0.0134-61.6259% and there was no health risk connected with consuming agricultural products in which pesticide residues were detected.

  • Purpose : This study examines the effect of trunk stabilization program on the body balance, lung capacity, and muscular activity of the rectus abdominis and external oblique of healthy adults. Method : A survey was conducted for 20 students of K University located in the city of Y in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province of Korea. The trunk stabilization program consisted of a hollowing exercise, curl-up, bridging exercise, and birddog exercise. This was performed 14 times in total (7 times a week for two weeks). For analysis, good balance was used to measure both static and dynamic balancing ability. A peak flow meter was used to measure the maximum expiratory flow, and MP150 was used to measure muscular activity of the rectus abdominis and external oblique. Result : After the trunk stabilization program, the participants showed a difference in score and time taken to achieve static and dynamic balance, and muscular activity of the rectus abdominis and external oblique at a statistically significant level (p<0.05). However, no significant difference was observed in the left-to-right distance and front-to-back distance in a dynamic balance, and the lung capacity (p>0.05). Conclusion : The results showed that the trunk stabilization program was effective in enhancing both static and dynamic balancing ability and muscular activity. It also increased the lung capacity although the change was not at a statistically significant level.

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate suicidal ideation and spirituality of college students. Method: The participants were 295 college students located in Busan city and Kyung Nam Province. The study used a 'Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire' and a 'Korean Spirituality Scale'. The collected data was analyzed for t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. Result: The level of suicidal ideation and spirituality of the participants averaged 1.73 and 3.44 respectively. In each sub-factor, meaning and purpose of life was the highest at 3.70 points. In differences of suicidal ideation and spirituality followed by general characteristics, there were significant differences according to gender, major, religion, and cohabitation. There were inverse correlations among suicidal ideation, spirituality level, connectedness, meaning and purpose of life, inner resources, and awareness. Suicidal ideation was significantly associated with major, spirituality level, connectedness, and meaning and purpose of life which explained 22% of variance in suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Future research should examine relations between college students' suicidal ideation and spirituality level through random sampling. Development of a program to lessen college students' suicidal ideation and to raise their spirituality level should be prudent.

  • In urban flood model, the features like roads, buildings, and river's banks have great effect on flow dynamics and flood propagation and it must be accounted for model set-up. Two-dimensional hydraulic models in high-density building areas are at the forefront of current research into flood inundation mechanisms, but they are however constrained by inadequate parameters of topography and friction due to insufficient and inaccurate data. This paper describes the development of urban flooding with the extraction of building areas and estimates the its influence on flood inundation extent, and present initial results of flood simulation varying grid size.

  • This study was undertaken to assess eating habits of 230 rural elementary school students living in ChunNam province. Anthropometric data showed that their mean height of girl students was significantly higher than that of boy students. Irregular eating pattern of girl students was noted. There was a significant difference in concerning on weight control between girls and boys. Girls especially view themselves as too obese even though their weight was in normal range and they were more concerned on weight control due to appearance. Nutrition education at school was an important factor ruling out peaky eating habits in participants. More effective nutrition education might be suggested to form a good eating habit which result in maintenance of ideal weight and promote health for rural elementary school students.

  • To test the compatibility of differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) and conventional in-situ monitoring technique we conducted a comparative analysis of the two systems using hourly measurement data sets of three criteria pollutants including No$_{2}$O$_{3}$, and SO$_{2}$ collected in months between April and June of 2001 at Sung Man city, Kyung Gi Province, Korea. The results of our comparative analysis were useful to evaluate the various aspects of DOAS performance, of particular the level of agreement with the counterpart method through computation of percent differences and correlation analysis. Interpretation of the mixing ratio data for those chemical species was however confined in terms of explaining the differences affected by the changes in environmental conditions because measurements of important meteorological parameters were limited during most of the study period. Nevertheless, the overall results of this study strongly demonstrated that the mixing ratio of major pollutants measured by the two different systems maintain strong compatibility from various respects.

  • The 587 Holstein cows which calved from January 1983 to December 1984 at an integrated dairy farm in Chung-Nam Province were investigated on incidence of retained fetal membrane. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The incidence of retained fetal membrane was 15.2% (89 heads) among 587 heads which investigated. 2. The cows which calved in summer showed significantly higher incidence of retained fetal membrane than those which calved in winter(P<0.01), spring and autumn (P<0.05). 3. There was no difference in incidence of retained fetal membrane by calving number.

  • This study is conducted to apply the insight of Johnson and Libecap(1982) to Korea's coastal vessel fishing. According to Johnson and Libecap(1982) the differences in fishing ability are largely attributed to acquired knowledge and innate skills. Since those skills are unlikely to be readily transferable assets, economic rents exist in the fishery, even under open access conditions. Therefore the paper tries to examine whether the acquired information from fishing experience and innate skill could also have an effect on catch variation of coastal vessel fishing in Kyung-Nam province. To do so, the paper is performing the analysis by establishing econometric model. Results show us that the acquired information from fishing experience have a significant effect on catch variation, but the innate skill does not.

  • Twenty Artemisia species are distributed in South Korea and rich in terpenoids. Artemisia rubripes (Compositae) has been used as a Korean traditional medicine for stomachache. vomiting. diarrhea and hemostatic agent. The antimutagenic effect and essential oils of Artemisia rubripes were reported, but phytochemical study has not been fully investigated. As part of our systematic study on the terpene constituents of Artemisia species. we have investigated A. rubripes (1 kg) collected at Dae-Kwan ryung. Gangwon Province on Aug. 1997. (omitted)
