Effects of Hydroxybrazilin on Glutathione Depletion Induced by $\textrm{BrCCl}_3$ and Menadione in Cultured Rat Hepatocytes

  • In this study we investigated the effect of hydroxybrazilin on glutathione depletion induced by BrCCl$_3$ and menadione in cultured hepatocytes to understand the cellular mechanisms of hepatoprotective effect of hydroxybrazilin. Hydroxybrazilin alone had no effect on total glutathione level and the ratio of reduced glutathione/total glutathione (GSH/(GSSG+GSH)). BrCCl$_3$ dramatically decreased total glutathione level and hydroxybrazilin significantly prevented glutathion depletion by BrCCl$_3$. The ratio of GSH/(GSSG+ GSH) was also decreased by BrCCl$_3$ and recovered by hydroxybrazilin treatment. Menadione decreased total glutathione level and the ratio of GSH/(GSSG+GSH) but hydroxybrazilin showed no significant effects on menadione-induced glutathione depletion. These data suggest that hydroxybrazilin might prevent the hepatotoxicity induced by chemicalderived radicals but not the toxicity linked with oxidative stress.

  • In this paper, we present an iterative learning method of compensating for position sensor error. The previously known compensation algrithms need a special perfect position sensor or a priori information about error sources, while ours does not. To our best knowledge, any iterative learning approach has not been taken for sensor error compensation. Furthermore, our iterative learning algorithm does not have the drawbacks of the existing iterative learning control theories. To be more specific, our algorithm learns a uncertain function inself rather than its special time-trajectory and does not request the derivatives of measurement signals. Moreover, it does not require the learning system to start with the same initial condition for all iterations. To illuminate the generality and practical use of our algorithm, we give the rigorous proof for its convergence and some experimental results.

  • This study was performed to find out the mineral cycles of sulphur in dynamic grassland ecosystems in a steady state condition at the northwest side on Mt. Kwanak. The experimental results may be summarized on the communities of a Zoysia japonica and a Miscanthus sinensis as follows. As compared with some properties of the surface soils among two semi-natural grasslands, sulphur war greater quantity in a Miscanthus sinensis than in a Zoysia japonica on Mt. Kwanak . For the case of steady production and release, the raion of annual mineral production to the amount accumulated on the top of mineral soil in a steady state provides the estimates of release constant k. The release constants on sulphur of the litter were 0.54 in a Zoysia japonica and 0.36 in a Miscanthus sinensis grassland. The half times of S required for the release or accumulation of the litter on the grassland were 1.28 years in a Zoysia japonica and 1.93 years in a Miscauthus sinensis The amounts of annual cycles for sulphur in the grassland ecosystem under the steady-state conditions were 20.65g /$m^2$ in a Zoysia japonica and 26.28g /$m^2$ in a Miacanthus sinensis grassland.   • Comtputer Aided Process Planning(CAPP) has been emerged as playing a key role in Computer Integrated Manufactunng(CIM) as the most critical link to integrate CAD and CAM. A modified variant CAPP system based on process planning rule base is developed in this paper. This CAPP system generates process plans automatically according to the GT code data provided as input. In order to execute process planning, various process planning rules are constructed in the form of decision tree and the inference engine that extracts the process plan based on the tree-structured rules are implemented.

  • The cycles of heavy metals, mercury, lead and cadmium, were investigated on in dynamic grassland ecosystems at a steady state in Zoysia japonica and Miscanthus sinensis in Mt. Kwanak, Korea. Estimates of decay constants of heavy metals based on experimental and methomatical model, were Hg 0.14, Pb 0.17 and Cd 0.41 of Z. japonica grassland, and Hg 0.33, Pb 0.13 and Cd 0.56 of M sinensis grassland. The durations of reaching half of initial amounts in Z. japonica and M. sinensis grassland, were Hg 4.95, Pb 4.07 and Cd 1.69 years, and Hg 2.10, Pb 5.33 and Cd 1.24 years respectively. Times needed for 99% decomposed were longer in Z. japonica than M. sinensis grassland. Decay velocity of constituents of surface soil layers were more rapidly in M. sinensis than Z. japonica grassland. Key words: Cycles of heavy metals, Mercury, Lead, Cadmium, Zoysia japonica.   • The optimal load distribution for two cooperating robots is studied in this paper, and a new solution approach utilizing force ellipsoid is proposed. The load distribution problem is formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem with a quadratic cost function. The limit on instantaneous power is considered in the problem formulation as the joint torque constraints. The optimal solution minimizing energy consumption is obtained using the concept of force ellipsoid and the nonlinear optimization theory. The force ellipsoid provides a useful geometrical insight into the load distribution problem. Despite the presence of the joint torque constraints, the optimal solution is obtained almost as a closed form, in which the joint torques are given in terms of a single scalar parameter that can be obtained numerically by solving a scalar equation.

  • The investigation was cycle of aluminum of surface soil elements in dynamic grassland ecosystems at a steady state in a Zoysia japonica and a Miscanthus sinensis ecosystem in Mt. Kwanak, Korea. Average amounts of total storage for aluminum in Z japonica and M. sinensis grasslands were 8,426mg /$m^2$ and 7,849mg /$m^2$ respectively. Decay constants estimated on the base of experimental and mathematical model, were 0.04 in Z japonica grassland, and 0.08 in M. sinensis grassland. Half time to decay aluminum of litter soils were 17.33 years in Z japonica grass-land, and 8.66 years in Al. sinensis grassland. 95% decay times in Z japonica, and in M. sinensis grassland were 75.0 years and 35.0 years respectively. Needed times to lose almost all of elements in Z japonica and M. sinensis grassland were 125.0 years, and 62.50 years respectively. The metals were losed more rapidly in M. sinensis than in Z japonica grassland. The cycle of aluminum was investigated to be related with soil acidity. Key words: Cycle of aluminum, Zoysia japonica.   • An investigation was performed to reveal the relation of the production and decomposition of the Zoysia japoni ica and Miscanthus sinensis litters on Mt.Kwanak. The decay constant k of litters was as follows; k of Zoysia japonica, k=0.44, k of Miscanthus sicensis, k=0.33 The time required for the decomposition of half of the accumulated organic matter of Zoysia japonice and Miscanthus sinensis was 1.6 and 2.1 years, respectively. The amount of mineral nutrients returned annually to soil is faster in the ZQvsia japonica grassland than in the Miscanthus sinensis grassland on Mt. Kwanak.   • In this paper, a memoryless H$_{\infty}$ controller for linear systems with state and input delays is presented. The proposed controller is a delay independent stabilizer which reduces the H$_{\infty}$ norm of the closed loop transfer function, from the disturbance to the controlled output, to a precribed level. The controller is obtained by solving a minimization problem involving linear matrix inequalities.s.

  • In this paper, we suggest the exact perturbation analysis(Exact_PA) technique with respect to the buffer storage in tandem queueing networks, through which the optimal buffer storage design problem is considered. The discrete event dynamic equations for the departure time of a customer are presented together with the basic properties of Full Out(FO) and No Input(NI) with respect to the buffer storage. The new perturbation rules with respect to the buffer storage are suggested, from which the exact perturbed path can be obtained. The optimal buffer storage problem is presented by introducing a performance measure consisting of the throughput and the buffer storage cost. An optimization algorithm maximizing this performance measure is derived by using the Exact_PA technique. The proposed perturbation analysis technique and the optimization algorithm are validated by numerical examples.
