  • This study was aimed to visualize the spatial distribution of PM10 data measured at non-uniformly distributed observation sites in South Korea. Different spatial interpolation methods were applied to irregularly distributed PM10 observation data from January, 2019, when the concentration was the highest and in July, 2019, when the concentration was the lowest. Four interpolation methods with different parameters were used: Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW), Ordinary Kriging (OK), radial base function, and scattered interpolation. Six cases were cross-validated and the normalized root-mean-square error for each case was compared. The results showed that IDW using smoothing-related factors was the most appropriate method, while the OK method was least appropriate. Our results are expected to help users select the proper spatial interpolation method for PM10 data analysis with comparative reliability and effectiveness.

  • The objectives of this study were to introduce spatial interpolation methods which have been applied in recent papers, to apply three methods (nearest monitor, inverse distance weighting, kriging) to domestic data (Ulsan cohort) as an example of estimating the personal exposure levels. We predicted the personal exposure estimates of 2,102 participants in Ulsan cohort using spatial interpolation methods based on information of their residential address. We found that there was a similar tendency among the estimates of each method. The correlation coefficients between predictions from pairs of interpolation methods (except for the correlation coefficient between nearest montitor and kriging of CO and $SO_2$) were generally high (r=0.84 to 0.96). Even if there are some limitations such as location and density of monitoring station, spatial interpolation methods can reflect spatial aspects of air pollutant and spatial heterogeneity in individual level so that they provide more accurate estimates than monitor data alone. But they may still result in misclassification of exposure. To minimize misclassification for better estimates, we need to consider individual characteristics such as daily activity pattern.

  • The 1st Forest Health Management survey was conducted to examine the health of the forests in Korea. However, in order to understand the health of the forests, which account for 63.7% of the total land area in South Korea, it is necessary to comprehensively spatialize the results of the survey beyond the sampling points. In this regard, out of the sample points of the 1st Forest Health Management survey in Gyeongbuk area, 78 spots were selected. For these spots, the species diversity index was selected from the survey sections, and the spatial interpolation method was applied. Inverse distance weighted (IDW), Ordinary Kriging and Ordinary Cokriging were applied as spatial interpolation methods. Ordinary Cokriging was performed by selecting vegetation indices which are highly correlated with species diversity index as a secondary variable. The vegetation indices - Normalized Differential Vegetation Index(NDVI), Leaf Area Index(LAI), Sample Ratio(SR) and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index(SAVI) - were extracted from Landsat 8 OLI. Verification was performed by the spatial interpolation method with Mean Error(ME) and Root Mean Square Error(RMSE). As a result, Ordinary Cokriging using SR showed the most accurate result with ME value of 0.0000218 and RMSE value of 0.63983. Ordinary Cokriging using SR was proven to be more accurate than Ordinary Kriging, IDW, using one variable. This indicates that the spatial interpolation method using the vegetation indices is more suitable for spatialization of the biodiversity index sample points of 1st Forest Health Management survey.

  • In recent, the natural disaster like localized heavy rainfall due to the climate change is increasing. Therefore, it is important issue that the precise observation of rainfall and accurate spatial distribution of the rainfall for fast recovery of damaged region. Thus, researches on the use of the radar rainfall data have been performed. But there is a limitation in the estimation of spatial distribution of rainfall using rain gauge. Accordingly, this study uses the Kriging method which is a spatial interpolation method, to measure the rainfall field in Namgang river dam basin. The purpose of this study is to apply KED(Kriging with External Drift) with OK(Ordinary Kriging) and CK(Co-Kriging), generally used in Korea, to estimate rainfall field and compare each method for evaluate the applicability of each method. As a result of the quantitative assessment, the OK method using the raingauge only has 0.978 of correlation coefficient, 0.915 of slope best-fit line, and 0.957 of $R^2$ and shows an excellent result that MAE, RMSE, MSSE, and MRE are the closest to zero. Then KED and CK are in order of their good results. But the quantitative assessment alone has limitations in the evaluation of the methods for the precise estimation of the spatial distribution of rainfall. Thus, it is considered that there is a need to application of more sophisticated methods which can quantify the spatial distribution and this can be used to compare the similarity of rainfall field.

  • The purpose of this work was to apply geographical information system (GIS) for geostatistical analyzing by selecting a semi-variogram model to quantify the spatial correlation of the population distribution with residential neighborhoods in the both sides of Mosul city. Two hundred and sixty-eight sample sites in 240 ㎢ are adopted. After determining the population distribution with respect to neighborhoods, data were inserted to ArcGIS10.3 software. Afterward, the datasets was subjected to the semi-variogram model using ordinary kriging interpolation. The results obtained from interpolation method showed that among the various models, Spherical model gives best fit of the data by cross-validation. The kriging prediction map obtained by this study, shows a particular spatial dependence of the population distribution with the neighborhoods. The results obtained from interpolation method also indicates an unbalanced population distribution, as there is no balance between the size of the population neighborhoods and their share of the size of the population, where the results showed that the right side is more densely populated because of the small area of residential homes which occupied by more than one family, as well as the right side is concentrated in economic and social activities.

  • The transmission capacity of transmission lines is affected by environmental parameters such as ambient temperature, wind speed, wind direction and so on. The environmental parameters can be measured by the installed measuring devices. However, it is impossible to install the environmental measuring devices throughout the line, especially considering economic cost of power grid. Taking into account the limited number of measuring devices and the distribution characteristics of environment parameters and transmission lines, this paper first studies the environmental parameter estimating method of inverse distance weighted interpolation and ordinary Kriging interpolation. Dynamic thermal rating of transmission lines based on IEEE standard and CIGRE standard thermal equivalent equation is researched and the key parameters that affect the load capacity of overhead lines is identified. Finally, the distributed thermal rating of transmission line is realized by using the data obtained from China meteorological data network. The cost of the environmental measurement device is reduced, and the accuracy of dynamic rating is improved.

  • A new seamless multiscale simulation was developed for coupling the continuum model with its molecular dynamics. Kriging-based Finite Element Method (K-FEM) is employed to model the continuum base of the entire domain, while the molecular dynamics (MD) is confined in a localized domain of interest. In the coupling zone, where the MD domain overlaps the continuum model, the overall Hamiltonian is postulated by contributions from the continuum and the molecular overlays, based on a quartic spline scaling parameter. The displacement compatibility in this coupling zone is then enforced by the Lagrange multiplier technique. A multiple-time-step velocity Verlet algorithm is adopted for its time integration. The validation of the present method is reported through numerical tests of one dimensional atomic lattice. The results reveal that at the continuum/MD interface, the commonly reported spurious waves in the literature are effectively eliminated in this study. In addition, the smoothness of the transition from MD to the continuum can be significantly improved by either increasing the size of the coupling zone or expanding the nodal domain of influence associated with K-FEM.

  • The purpose of this study is an optimization of gate valve made by forging method instead of welding method. In this study, we propose an optimal shape design to improve the mechanical efficiency of gate valve. In order to optimize more efficiently and reliably, the meta-modeling technique has been developed to solve such a complex problems combined with the DACE (Design and Analysis of Computer Experiments). The DACE modeling, known as the one of Kriging interpolation, is introduced to obtain the surrogate approximation model of the function. Also, we prove reliability of the DACE model's application to gate valve by computer simulations using FEM(Finite Element Method).

  • The Development of CCD has contributed to great advancement in mapping technology with giving benefits to research community of photogrammetry. The purpose of this paper is to find the best selection of interpolation method for creating a terrain model form close range digital photogrammetry. T-test as a kind of statistical analysis was conducted to analyze the similarity of hydraulic model with close range digital photogrammetry and trigonometric leveling. Also, many interpolation methods such as inverse distance, kriging, nearest neighbor and TIN about the hydraulic model interpolation were conducted to compare the results for computer to display actual terrain an optimum interpolation of the digital elevation model form close range digital photogrammetry. The results revealed that kriging and TIN interpolation were efficient methods to judge the hazard interpolation law by analyzing geometric similarity of hydraulic model against hydraulic model application.
