  • Reservoir is an important infrastructure of our society because it can store immense amount of water for various usages - manufacturing, agriculture, drinking, power generation, tourism etc. For maintenance of reservoir, various efforts in administrative and technological aspects are periodically conducted and monitoring the conditions of reservoir bed is the first priority for maintenance of reservoir. To check the conditions of reservoir bed, we measured depth of reservoir by using echo sounder, which is relatively reliable, prior to discharging of stored water and surveyed topography of reservoir by using UAV after discharging of water. Then, we conducted interpolation of measured depth of water by means of inverse distance weighting interpolation, Kriging interpolation, minimum curvature interpolation and radial basis function interpolation and calculated the volume of reservoir for each interpolation method. We compared the calculated volume of reservoir with the volume of water calculated by UAV after discharging of water and found the following results: First, as results of the above processes, we found that the Kriging interpolation was 97% correct in measurement of the volume of reservoir. Second, as results of comparison of differences between topographical areas and interpolated areas after selection of cross section for comparison, Kriging interpolation was found to have the most similar configuration with the topographical configuration by showing the least difference in the area of cross section. Therefore, it is determined that the optimal modeling of reservoir bed with the water depth data measured by echo sounder shall provide basic information for efficient maintenance of reservoir.

  • Objectives Cohort studies of associations between air pollution and health have used exposure prediction approaches to estimate individual-level concentrations. A common prediction method used in Korean cohort studies is ordinary kriging. In this study, performance of ordinary kriging models for long-term particulate matter less than or equal to $10{\mu}m$ in diameter ($PM_{10}$) concentrations in seven major Korean cities was investigated with a focus on spatial prediction ability. Methods We obtained hourly $PM_{10}$ data for 2010 at 226 urban-ambient monitoring sites in South Korea and computed annual average $PM_{10}$ concentrations at each site. Given the annual averages, we developed ordinary kriging prediction models for each of the seven major cities and for the entire country by using an exponential covariance reference model and a maximum likelihood estimation method. For model evaluation, cross-validation was performed and mean square error and R-squared ($R^2$) statistics were computed. Results Mean annual average $PM_{10}$ concentrations in the seven major cities ranged between 45.5 and $66.0{\mu}g/m^3$ (standard deviation=2.40 and $9.51{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively). Cross-validated $R^2$ values in Seoul and Busan were 0.31 and 0.23, respectively, whereas the other five cities had $R^2$ values of zero. The national model produced a higher cross-validated $R^2$ (0.36) than those for the city-specific models. Conclusions In general, the ordinary kriging models performed poorly for the seven major cities and the entire country of South Korea, but the model performance was better in the national model. To improve model performance, future studies should examine different prediction approaches that incorporate $PM_{10}$ source characteristics.

  • Geo-layer information is important to determine pile length and estimate residual settlement in the construction site. An overall spatial distribution of geo-layers in the entire construction site can be predicted using drill-log information. In this study, the geo-layer distribution at Song-do area was estimated by kriging and inverse distance weighting methods, and a cross validation was adopted to verify the reliability of estimation results. The analysis results indicate that the best fitted theoretical variogram model to the experimental variogram does not always provide the most reliable estimation in the kriging method. The proper $\alpha$ value of inverse distance weighting method must be determined by types of geo-layer, because the $\alpha$ value is affected by types of geo-layer. Results of the kriging method show more reliable results than those of inverse distance weighting method, and the structure of geo-layer distribution could be evaluated by variogram in the kriging method.

  • Geomechanical parameters are important factors for engineering projects during design, construction and support stages of tunnel and dam projects. Geostatistical estimation methods are known as one of the most significant approach at estimation of Geomechanical parameters. In this study, Azad dam headrace tunnel is chosen to estimate Geomechanical parameters such as Rock Quality Designation (RQD) and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) by ordinary kriging as a geostatistical method. Also Rock Mass Rating (RMR) distribution is presented along the tunnel. Main aim in employment of geostatistical methods is estimation of points that unsampled by sampled points. To estimation of parameters, initially data are transformed to Gaussian distribution, next structural data analysis is completed, and then ordinary kriging is applied. At end, specified distribution maps for each parameter are presented. Results from the geostatistical estimation method and actual data have been compared. Results show that, the estimated parameters with this method are very close to the actual parameters. Regarding to the reduction of costs and time consuming, this method can use to geomechanical estimation.

  • RBDO approach based on a sampling method with the Kriging metamodel and Constraint Boundary Sampling (CBS), which is sequential sampling method to generate metamodels is proposed. The major advantage of the proposed RBDO approach is that it does not require Most Probable failure Point (MPP) which is essential for First-Order Reliability Method (FORM)-based RBDO approach. The Monte Carlo Sampling (MCS), most well-known method of the sampling methods for the reliability analysis is used to assess the reliability of constraints. In addition, a Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) of the constraints is approximated using Moving Least Square (MLS) method from empirical distribution function. It is possible to acquire a probability of failure and its analytic sensitivities by using an approximate function of the CDF for the constraints. Moreover, a concept of inactive design is adapted to improve a numerical efficiency of the proposed approach. Computational accuracy and efficiency of the proposed RBDO approach are demonstrated by numerical and engineering problems.

  • We have evaluated the extent of saltwater intrusion from electrical resistivity distribution in a coastal aquifer system in the southeastern part of Busan, Korea. This aquifer system is divided into four layers according to the hydrogeologic characteristics and the horizontal extent of intruded saltwater is determined at each layer through the geostatistical interpretation of electrical resistivity data. In order to define the statistical structure of electrical resistivity data, variogram analysis is carried out to obtain best generalized covariance models. IRF-k (intrinsic random function of order k) kriging is performed with covariance models to produce the plane of spatial mean resistivities. The kriged estimates are evaluated by cross validation to show a good agreement with the true values and the statistics of cross validation represented low errors for the estimates. In the resistivity contour maps more than 5 m below the surface, we can see a dominant direction of saltwater intrusion beginning from the east side. The area of saltwater intrusion increases with depth. The northeast side has low resistivities less than 5 ohm-m due to the presence of saline water in the depth range of 20 m through 70 m. These results show that the application of geostatistical technique to electrical resistivity data is useful for assessing saltwater intrusion in a coastal aquifer system.

  • Recently developed automotive components are getting lighter providing a higher fuel efficiency and performance. Following the current trend, this study proposes a structural optimization method for the lower control arm installed at the front side of a Vehicle. Lightweight design of lower control arm can be achieved through design and material technology. In this research, the shape of lower control arm was determined by applying the optimization technology and aluminum was selected as a steel-substitute material. Strength performance is the most important design requirement in the structural design of a control arm. This study considers the static strength in the optimization process. For the optimum design, the durability analysis is performed to predict its fatigue life. In this study, the kriging interpolation method is adopted to obtain the minimum weight satisfying the strength constraint. Optimum designs are obtained by the in-house program, EXCEL-Kriging. Also, based on the optimum model obtained for the static strength, the optimization of Index of Fatigue Durability is carried out to get th optimum fatigue performance.

  • In this study, we present the optimization of a head slider using kriging method in order to reduce lift-off force during unloading process with satisfying reliable flying attitude in steady state. To perform an optimization process efficiently, a simplified lift-off force model, which is a function of air bearing suction force and flying attitudes, is created by kriging method. The EMDIOS, which is the process integration and design optimization software developed by iDOT, is used to automatically wrap the analysis with the optimization and efficiently implements the repetitive works between analyzer and optimizer. An optimization problem is formulated to reduce the lift-off force during unloading process while satisfying the flying attitude in reliable range over the entire recording band and reducing the probability of contact between slider and disk. The simulation result shows that the amplitude of lift-off force of optimized L/UL slider is reduced about 62%, compared with that of initial slider model. It is demonstrated by the dynamics L/UL simulation that the optimum slider incorporated with the suspension is not only smoothly loaded onto disk but also properly unloaded onto the ramp.

  • Rainfall is one of the most important input data of hydrologic models. Rain gage is used to estimate areal rainfall for hydrologic models using several interpolation method such as Thiessen polygon, Inverse Distance Squared(IDS) and Kriging. However, it is still difficult to derive actual spatial distribution of the rainfall using the aforementioned approaches. On the other hand, radar can offer a significant analytic improvement for rainfall analysis by providing directly more representative of the true spatial distribution of rainfall. In this study, In this study, spatial distributions of rainfall derived form rain gages using IDS and Kriging and rainfall from radar are compared. As results, it is found that using radar can provide actual spatial distribution than rain gages.
