  • Previous studies of the Korean wave have focused mainly on fan clubs by taking an ethnographic approach in the context of countries in Southeast Asia and, in a minor extension, Europe. This study fills the gap in the literature by providing a social network analysis of Tweets in the context of Mexico. We used the Twitter API in order to collect Twitter comments with the hashtag #kpop from March to August 2012, analyzing them with a set of webometric methodologies. The results indicate that #kpop power Twitterians in Mexico were more likely to be related to the public television broadcast. The sent Tweets were usually related to their programs and promotion for Kpop artists. These Tweets tended to be positive, and according to URLs, not only Kpop but also Korean dramas had considerable influence on the Korean wave in Mexico.

  • The purpose of the project is to study the factors affecting the new user experience and satisfaction as the concert market of K-POP is moved to the online stage by the Corona 19. The study conducted a survey and in-depth interviews with men and women in their 20s and 30s who participated in the K-POP online concert, consisting of proposed by Stephen P. Anderson. The study found that participants' propensity, concert composition, platform-supported technology, and quality factors affect user experience satisfaction. It was also noticed that while the grafting of new technology did not have a significant effect on the part of Pleasurable, the satisfaction level was significantly reduced if the quality was poor. Hopefully, this study becomes a reference to the future direction of online concert development.

  • As a part of the KIAPS (Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems) Package for Observation Processing (KPOP), we have developed the modules for Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A (AMSU-A) pre-processing and its bias correction. The KPOP system calculates the airmass bias correction coefficients via the method of multiple linear regression in which the scan-corrected innovation and the thicknesses of 850~300, 200~50, 50~5, and 10~1 hPa are respectively used for dependent and independent variables. Among the four airmass predictors, the multicollinearity has been shown by the Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) that quantifies the severity of multicollinearity in a least square regression. To resolve the multicollinearity, we adopted simple linear regression and Principal Component Regression (PCR) to calculate the airmass bias correction coefficients and compared the results with those from the multiple linear regression. The analysis shows that the order of performances is multiple linear, principal component, and simple linear regressions. For bias correction for the AMSU-A channel 4 which is the most sensitive to the lower troposphere, the multiple linear regression with all four airmass predictors is superior to the simple linear regression with one airmass predictor of 850~300 hPa. The results of PCR with 95% accumulated variances accounted for eigenvalues showed the similar results of the multiple linear regression.

  • Bias correction (BC) and quality control (QC) are essential steps for the proper use of satellite observations in data assimilation (DA) system. BC should be calculated over quality controlled observation. And also QC should be performed for bias corrected observation. In the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems (KIAPS) Package for Observation Processing (KPOP), we adopted an adaptive BC method that calculates the BC coefficients with background at the analysis time rather than using static BC coefficients. In this study, we have developed an iterative QC-BC method for Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A (AMSU-A) to reduce the negative feedback from the interaction between BC and QC. The new iterative QC-BC is evaluated in the KIAPS 3-dimensional variational (3DVAR) DA cycle for January 2016. The iterative QC-BC method for AMSU-A shows globally significant benefits for error reduction of the temperature. The positive impacts for the temperature were predominant at latitudes of $30^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}$ of both hemispheres. Moreover, the background warm bias across the troposphere is decreased. Even though AMSU-A is mainly designed for atmospheric temperature sounding, the improvement of AMSU-A pre-processing module has a positive impact on the wind component over latitudes of $30^{\circ}S$ near upper-troposphere, respectively. Consequently, the 3-day-forecast-accuracy is improved about 1% for temperature and zonal wind in the troposphere.

  • The high-resolution ocean surface wind vector produced by scatterometer was assimilated within the Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter (LETKF) in Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems (KIAPS). The Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) on Metop-A/B wind data was processed in the KIAPS Package for Observation Processing (KPOP), and a module capable of processing surface wind observation was implemented in the LETKF system. The LETKF data assimilation cycle for evaluating the performance improvement due to ASCAT observation was carried out for approximately 20 days from June through July 2017 when Typhoon Nepartak was present. As a result, we have found that the performance of ASCAT wind vector has a clear and beneficial effect on the data assimilation cycle. It has reduced analysis errors of wind, temperature, and humidity, as well as analysis errors of lower troposphere wind. Furthermore, by the assimilation of the ASCAT wind observation, the initial condition of the model described the typhoon structure more accurately and improved the typhoon track prediction skill. Therefore, we can expect the analysis field of LETKF will be improved if the Scatterometer wind observation is added.

  • In this study, the temperature bias of aircraft observation was estimated through comparison with sonde observation prior to developing the temperature bias correction method at the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems (KIAPS). First, we tried to compare aircraft temperature with collocated sonde observations at 0000 UTC on June 22, 2012. However, it was difficult to estimate the temperature bias due to the lack of samples and the uncertainty of the sonde position at high altitudes. Second, we attempted a background innovation comparison for sonde and aircraft using KIAPS Package for Observation Processing (KPOP). The one month averaged background innovation shows the aircraft temperature have a warm bias against sonde for all levels. In particular, there is a globally distinct warm bias about 0.4 K between 200 hPa and 300 hPa corresponding to flight level. Spatially, most of the areas showed the warm bias except for below 300 hPa in some part of China at 0000 and 1200 UTC and below 850 hPa in Australia at 0000 UTC. In general, the temperature bias was larger at 1200 UTC than 0000 UTC. Based on the estimated temperature bias, we have applied the static bias correction method to the aircraft temperature observation. As a result, the warm bias of the aircraft temperature has decreased at most levels, but a slight cold bias has occurred in some areas.

  • The conventional observations of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) are compared in the numerical weather forecast system at the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems (KIAPS). The weather forecasting system used in this study is consists of Korea Integrated Model (KIM) as a global numerical weather prediction model, three-dimensional variational method as a data assimilation system, and KIAPS Package for Observation Processing (KPOP) as an observation pre-processing system. As a result, the forecast performance of NCEP observation was better while the number of observation is similar to the KMA observation. In addition, the sensitivity of forecast performance was investigated for each SONDE, SURFACE and AIRCRAFT observations. The differences in AIRCRAFT observation were not sensitive to forecast, but the use of NCEP SONDE and SURFACE observations have shown better forecast performance. It is found that the NCEP observations have more wind observations of the SONDE in the upper atmosphere and more surface pressure observations of the SURFACE in the ocean. The results suggest that evenly distributed observations can lead to improved forecast performance.

  • This study examined whether K-pop dance is qualified as an academic subject and how university students perceive K-pop dance as a liberal art subject. The survey was conducted with 138 students. Among the total of 138, 40 participants were male, and 53 participants were female. Fourteen(14) participants had experience with K-pop classes, and 124 participants did not have any experience with K-pop dance classes. According to the study, K-pop is a form of Korean culture that adds unique cultural and social characteristics to Koreans. It is in the cultural and art education category. In addition, K-pop dance is a socio-cultural phenomenon characterized by dance. However, K-pop dance is not qualified as an academic subject because it lacks theoretical foundations. The survey result also revealed that the students did not perceive that K-pop dance had personal, aesthetic, social, or educational value. They did not want to take a class if K-pop dance is offered as an academic subject in liberal art class. When analyzing the data by gender and experiences with dance classes, there was a difference based on gender in the two questions. In the case of females, they responded to having fun and joy from K-pop dance, while male respondents did not. Regarding the learners' interest in Kpop dance class, female respondents were more optimistic about the learner interest than male respondents. In conclusion, K-pop dance is a sociocultural phenomenon, and many informal online courses are created daily, spreading everywhere. However, the status of K-pop dance as an academic area is not set up yet.
