  • This paper describes the improvement of the calculation by using $6{\sigma}$ method on steam turbine simulator in a nuclear power plant. The simulator is essential to not only verification and validation of control logic but also making sure of control constants in upgrading the long time used control system into the new one. And the dynamic model is a key point in that simulator. The model used during the retrofit period of the turbine controller in Kori Nuclear Power Plant makes difference in calculating generator output and control valve positions. That is because such operating data as the main steam pressure, the main steam temperature and control valve positions of Yongkwang #3 are different from those of Kori #4. Therefore, the model parameters must be tuned by using actual operating data for the high fidelity of simulator in calculating the dynamic characteristic of the model. This paper describes that the $6{\sigma}$ method is used in improvement of precision of generator output calculation in the steam turbine model of the simulator.

  • The Kori Unit 1 will be decommissioned after a permanent shutdown in June 2017. South Korea has a 0.1 mSv/yr exposure limit standard for limited or unlimited site release. This is South Korea's first commercial NPP; therefore, if the containment building is reused as a memorial hall, it will contribute to the improvement of public understanding and enhance the public's acceptance of NPPs. Also, existing Kori Unit 1 nuclear power plant manpower resources can be reused after decommissioning and resident staff and memorial hall visitors can activate nearby commercial areas. Therefore, such a reuse scenario may also prevent an economic recession. The exposure dose was calculated using the following scenarios: worker in the containment building, visitor in the containment building, and worker in buildings other than the containment building. The exposure dose in the buildings was calculated by the RESRAD-BUILD developed by the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The preliminary exposure dose and derived concentration guideline level (DCGL) were derived.

  • The purpose of this study is to reduce the fast neutron fluence at the reactor pressure vessel(RPV) and to provide a basis for plant-life extension. In this study, different neutron absorbers were employed in the core outer assemblies of Kori Unit 1 Cycle 14. The modified assemblies were used to calculate fast neutron fluence at the RPV and to evaluate reduction of outer assembly power and total power in core. By comparison with the case of no suppression fixture, the fast neutron fluence of a case with two rows stainless steel around the assembly with natural uranium pins is decreased by 85.8%. It is noted that the modification of outer assembly is more efficient than the previous low leakage loading pattern (LLLP) applied to Kori Unit 1. Also, compared fast neutron fluence in Cycle 1 with Cycle 14, fast neutron fluence at the RPV between Cycle 1 and Cycle 14 is not significantly different. It is found that LLLP applied to the Kori Unit 1 has not contributed to fast neutron fluence reduction at the RPV.

  • The present paper deals with the measurement of the environmental radioactivity at the Kori nuclear Power Plant site area for the Period of six years from December 1970 to December 1976. Gross alpha activity was measured in samples of airborne particulate. Gross beta measurement was performed on soil, water, airborne perticulate, pine needle, precipitation, fallout (gummed acetate paper) and various foodstuffs. Radioactivities of strontium-90 and cesium-l37 were determined by means of radiochemical analyses in samples of spinach, cabbage, barley, rice in terrestrial food, sea eel, shell fish, dulse, green laver in marine product and milk, and of fallout (cloumn), Furthermore, tritum was also analyzed in water sample of well, stream and sea by electrical enrichment.
