Objective The purpose of this study is to gather information from clinical studies conducted in China and analyze the effects of herbal medicine treatment for childhood vitiligo. Methods The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with herbal medicine treatment for childhood vitiligo from the Chinese Academic Journal (CAJ) from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) were searched. Then, each study was analyzed by demographics, disease durations, interventions, treatment periods, outcomes, adverse events, and compositions of the herbal medicine used. Result A total of 6 RCTs were included. All the trials except for one used a combination of Chinese herbal medicine with Western medicine as their treatment groups. The total efficacy rate was used to measure the effectiveness, and the treatment groups reported a significantly higher total efficacy rate compared to the control groups in all studies. In one study, a control group treated with compound glycyrrhizin capsule and topical compound kaliziran tincture combination treatment was compared with a treatment group which used the same treatment that the control group received in addition to oral herbal medicine. This study also showed higher total effectiveness in the treatment group than the control group. Conclusions In pediatric vitiligo, a combination of herbal medicine treatment rather than Western medical treatment alone can improve symptoms. In addition, it was suggested that the therapeutic effect can be enhanced when oral herbal medicine is used in combination with other herbal medicine treatments.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to report the clinical results of various medical methods (including Chuna joint mobilization) used to treat a single patient with polyneuritis. Methods : We treated a 46 year-old female patient diagnosed with polyneuritis using various methods, including acupuncture, moxibustion, infrared therapy, herbal medication, Western medication, Chuna manual therapy, and physical therapy. We evaluated the results using the numeric rating scale (NRS), manual muscle test (MMT), active range of motion (ROM), modified barthel index (MBI). Other evaluation scale included Deep tendon reflex and thickness of muscle especially forearm and lower leg. Results : Following treatment using a combination of the above methods, the general overall condition of the patients was significantly improved. Furthermore, the NRS, MMT, MBI, and the active ROM scores were numerically improved. Conclusions : In this case, a single patient with polyneuritis was treated using a combination of Korean and Western medical methods. Although this study provides useful insight into treatment methods, further studies are required to determine the treatment effects of Korean medicine, specifically Chuna manual therapy, in patients with polyneuritis.
Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the combination therapy of Yukmijihwang-tang and Western medicine on primary glomerulonephritis. Methods: We conducted a search using keywords, such as Yukmijihwang-tang and Liuwei Dihuang, in eight databases (CNKI, CiNii, Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane, Science On, OASIS, RISS). There was no limit to the publication period of the papers. A meta-analysis was conducted and classified according to the outcome measurements, such as the total effective rate (TER), serum creatinine (SCr), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). Data analysis was performed using the RevMan 5.4.1 software, and Cochrane's risk of bias (ROB) was used to assess the quality of the papers. Results: A total of 12 randomized control trials were selected. The meta-analysis showed that the treatment group combining Yumijihwang-tang and Western medicine was more efficient than the control group using Western medicine alone (RR: 1.29, CI: 1.20 to 1.39 p=<0.00001). The treatment group also reduced the BUN (MD: -2.40, CI: -2.90 to -1.89, p<0.00001) and Scr (MD: -33.34, CI: -40.85 to -25.82, P<0.00001) more than the control group. Conclusion: This study suggests that the combination therapy of Yukmijihwang-tang with Western medicine is effective in treating primary glomerulonephritis. However, these findings should be interpreted cautiously due to the unknown or high risk of bias in the included trials.
TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a promising agent for management of cancer because of its selective cytotoxicity to cancer cells. However, some cancer cells have resistance to TRAIL. Accordingly, novel treatment strategies are required to overcome TRAIL resistance. Here, we examined the synergistic apoptotic effect of apigenin in combination with TRAIL in Huh-7 cells. We found that combined treatment of TRAIL and apigenin markedly inhibited Huh-7 cell growth compared to either agent alone by inducing apoptosis. Combined treatment with apigenin and TRAIL induced chromatin condensation and the cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). In addition, enhanced apoptosis by TRAIL/apigenin combination was quantified by annexin V/PI flow cytometry analysis. Western blot analysis suggested that apigenin sensitizes cells to TRAIL-induced apoptosis by activating both intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathway-related caspases. The augmented apoptotic effect by TRAIL/apigenin combination was accompanied by triggering mitochondria-dependent signaling pathway, as indicated by Bax/Bcl-2 ratio up-regulation. Our results demonstrate that combination of TRAIL and apigenin facilitates apoptosis in Huh-7 cells.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report on the good results achieved through Korean and western medicine treatment on patients with idiopathic bilateral facial nerve palsy. Methods : We treated a female patient with idiopathic bilateral facial nerve palsy by Korean medicine treatment such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, cupping therapy, and taping therapy. The patient also received western medicine treatment. The treatment effect was evaluated by visual observation through photography, House-Brackmann scale, Yanagihara's scale, standardization of muscular paralysis, and clinical symptoms. Results : After the treatment, muscle movements and clinical symptoms improved, and all facial palsy evaluation indicators also showed improvement. In particular, the House-Brackmann-scale showed improvement from (3/4) to (1/2). Conclusions : This case study shows that Korean-western medicine combination treatment for idiopathic bilateral facial nerve palsy can be effective. We hope that case reports and clinical research will continue to be actively conducted in the future.

We investigated the eradication rate and the adverse effects of combined treatment with western and oriental medication on Helicobacter pylori infected patients. We studied the eradication rate and the adverse effects of 1-week-triple therapy and 2-week-oriental medication(Banhasasimtang or Hyangsapeungeuysan) on Helicobacter pylori infected patients confirmed by urea breath test. Comparing 5 patients who took combined treatment with western and oriental medication, the results of this study showed that 4 patients got eradication effect of Helicobacter pylori with no influence on liver and kidney function. A patient had diarrhea and another patient had satiety after meals because of an adverse effect. Despite some possitive effect, the treatment did not make the Quality of Life improved. The findings of this study supports the adverse effects of combined treatment with western and oriental medication for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical characteristics in children and adolescents with peripheral facial palsy that was treated with Korean medicine. Methods The study was conducted based on 284 cases that consisted of 261 children (less than 19 years old) who visited the hospital of Korean medicine from August 2010 to August 2014. Then, this study was analyzed by reviewing the patients' charts. Results The incidence of facial palsy in pediatric patients was more common in boys than in girls and the mean age was 11.2 years. The prevalence of facial palsy was more common in winter and most were diagnosed with Bell's palsy. Recurrence was identified in 12.6% of the patients. The average age of the first attack was 9.5 years. It took about 3.2 years for recurrence to occur from the first onset. It took about 5 days to visit the hospital of Korean medicine from the onset. 81% of the patients came within 1 week from the onset. 50.7% of the cases did not receive any treatment before and 49.3% were previously treated at other hospitals. More than half of the patients (65.1%) received Korean medicine first. 54.6% of the patients were hospitalized and 45.4% received outpatient treatments in the hospital of Korean medicine. Outpatient treatments were administered about 11.5 times while hospitalized patients were treated for an average of 16.6 days. In general, hospitalized patients were treated more often than the outpatient group. An overall average duration of treatment was 70.6 days from the onset of facial palsy until the last day of treatment, and 53.0 days from the first day of treatment until the last day of treatment. 41.5% of the cases were treated only with Korean medicine and 49.0% were treated with a combination of Korean and Western medicine. The types of Korean medicine treatment used for facial palsy in descending order of frequency were acupuncture, Infra red, herbal medicine, SSP therapy, electro-acupuncture, carbone, hot pack, cupping, and moxibustion. The treatments that were most frequently used from Western medicines were steroid as monotherapy (61.7%) and a combination of steroids and antiviral therapy (37.6%). Conclusions This result showed that the risk of facial palsy recurrence among children is relatively high and that facial palsy requires a long-term treatment. It's helpful to explain about prognosis, treatment duration, and recurrence potential in children. Facial palsy in children is treated in various ways but more studies about the therapeutic effects of Korean medicine, Western medicine, and combination of Korean-Western medicine in children are needed.
Objective : The purpose of this study is to examine safety of herbal medicine on liver function and compare with western medicine. Method : 303 subjects of skin disease(vitiligo and psoriasis) were chosen at a local oriental medical clinic, and tested with a spot liver function test from Sept 1, 2006 to Dec 31, 2006. Subjects were grouped into untreated, herbal medicine, western medicine, and combination group by treatment record. Total bilirubin, AST, ALT and LDH was compared in each group, odds ratio and regression coefficient was calculated. Results : Subjects comprised of 116 individuals receiving western medication(38.28%), 54 receiving herbal medication(17.82%), 107 receiving combined forms of medication(35.31%), and 26 individuals without any types of medication(8.58%). With the mean age of 37.0 yr. 204 were male(67.3%), 99 were female(32.7%). Comparing variables of liver functions, there was no significant difference between the control and experiment groups. After adjusting potential confounders, monthly $\beta$(SE) of multiple regression -0.009~0.000 for the herbal group, -0.005~0.000 for the western group, and -0.001~0.001 for the combination group. No significant difference between the groups. OR of T-bilirubin were 1.02, 1.05, and 1.04. AST were 0.92, 0.94, and 0.98. ALT were 0.85, 0.99, and 0.97. LDH were 0.96, 1.06, 1.00 for the herbal, western, and combination group, respectively. Conclusion : Comparing with western medication, herbal medication did not cause special ill-effect on the liver function based on liver function tests.
