  • This study aims to measure effects of cause-related marketing by using consumer's preference of cause-related marketing product as a dependent variable. One of main factors influence on preference of cause-related marketing product is a product type. Previous research has shown that hedonic product is more effective for cause-related marketing than utilitarian product. The result was largely explained by the logic of guilt. However, there were conflicting results. In addition, the level of guilt may vary depending on the consumer characteristics or the market environment. Therefore, this study focuses on the impact of product type on the effect of cause-related marketing. For the Korean and Chinese markets, this study examines the effect of interactions between countries and product type. The result was significant. Specifically, there was a difference in preference of cause-related marketing product between Korean and Chinese consumers by product type. Based on the findings, implications and limitations of this study and future research directions were presented.

  • This paper aims to compare the language of food related to rice and wheat in Korean, Chinese and Japanese. These three countries in East Asia are very close in terms of geography, history, and culture. As of language, Korean and Japanese are classified as a same language family, while Chinese, to another. However, since three countries have been sharing Chinese character and words composed of it, there are many alike things in their languages. It is natural that food and the language of food are shared in neighboring areas. Among many food, I will explain the names of rice and wheat and the details of the names of various food made of them. In particular, rather than a simple comparison, the language of food is analyzed in the viewpoint of migration. And I will look into the names of food not only in relation to language, but also in culture, society and history.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of cultivation conditions on the growth and glucosinolate content of Chinese cabbage and kale. Methods: Chinese cabbage and kale were grown in three different cultivation conditions, including a plant factory, greenhouse, and open field. Samples were collected at two harvesting times (10 d and 20 d after transplanting the seedlings). Nine growth parameters (plant height, plant width, number of leaves, petiole diameter, SPAD readout, leaf length, leaf width, stem diameter, and plant weight) were measured immediately after harvesting, and the samples were freeze-dried and stored until the glucosinolate content was analyzed. Mean values of the growth parameters and glucosinolate contents were evaluated using Duncan's multiple range tests. Results: The results indicated that the plant parameters of the Chinese cabbage and kale were greater for plants grown in the plant factory and greenhouse. The plant height, width, and weight showed significant differences in the Duncan's multiple range tests at a 5% level. The plant factory also produced greater contents of most of the glucosinolates. Conclusions: Three different cultivation conditions significantly affected the growth and glucosinolate contents of Chinese cabbage and kale. Further study is necessary to investigate other functional components and different vegetable varieties.

  • This study examines the differences and similarities of mathematics teachers' subject matter knowledge among England, the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong. Data were collected from a ten-item test in the SKIMA subject matter audit instrument [Rowland, T.; Martyn, S.; Barber, P. & Heal, C. (2000). Primary teacher trainees' mathematics subject knowledge and classroom performance. In: T. Rowland & C. Morgan (eds.), Research in Mathematics Education, Volume 2 (pp.3-18). ME 2000e.03066] from over 500 participants. Results showed that participants from England performed consistently better, with those from Hong Kong being next and then followed by those from the Chinese mainland. The qualitative data revealed that participants from Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland were fluent in applying routines to solve problems, but had some difficulties in offering explanations or justifications.

  • The Molten Salt Reactor (MSR), one of the six advanced reactor types of the 4th generation nuclear energy systems, has many impressive features including economic advantages, inherent safety and nuclear non-proliferation. This paper introduces a system analysis code named TREND, which is developed and used for the steady and transient simulation of MSRs. The TREND code calculates the distributions of pressure, velocity and temperature of single-phase flows by solving the conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy, along with a fluid state equation. Heat structures coupled with the fluid dynamics model is sufficient to meet the demands of modeling MSR system-level thermal-hydraulics. The core power is based on the point reactor neutron kinetics model calculated by the typical Runge-Kutta method. An incremental PID controller is inserted to adjust the operation behaviors. The verification and validation of the TREND code have been carried out in two aspects: detailed code-to-code comparison with established thermal-hydraulic system codes such as RELAP5, and validation with the experimental data from MSRE and the CIET facility (the University of California, Berkeley's Compact Integral Effects Test facility). The results indicate that TREND can be used in analyzing the transient behaviors of MSRs and will be improved by validating with more experimental results with the support of SINAP.

  • A fluorescent microsphere-based immunochromatographic strip test (FICT) was developed for the rapid, sensitive, and quantitative detection of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) antibodies at the pen-side. The assay was based on the formation of a sandwich immune-complex (anti-pig IgG-PRRSV antibodies-NSP7/N), which was validated by a comparison with IDEXX-ELISA using 3325 clinical specimens. The diagnostic specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy of FICT were 97.28, 93.41, and 94.95%, respectively. FICT showed a good correlation with the virus neutralization assay. Overall, a promising pen-side diagnostic tool was developed for the rapid and quantitative detection of PRRSV antibodies within 15 min.

  • Background: Although flowers of Panax ginseng Meyer (FPG), Panax quinquefolius L. (FPQ), and Panax notoginseng Burk. (FPN) have been historically used as both medicine and food, each is used differently in practice. Methods: To investigate the connection between components and enhancing immunity activity of FPG, FPQ, and FPN, a method based on a rapid LC coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight MS and immunomodulatory activity study evaluated by a carbon clearance test were combined. Results: According to quantitative results, the ratio of the total content of protopanaxatiol-type ginsenosides to protopanaxadiol-type ginsenosides in FPN was 0, but ranged from 1.10 to 1.32 and from 0.23 to 0.35 in FPG and FPQ, respectively. The ratio of the total content of neutral ginsenosides to the corresponding malonyl-ginsenosides in FPN ($5.52{\pm}1.33%$) was higher than FPG ($3.2{\pm}0.64%$) and FPQ ($2.39{\pm}0.57%$). The colorimetric analysis showed the content of total ginsenosides in FPQ, FPG, and FPN to be $13.75{\pm}0.60%$, $17.45{\pm}0.42%$, and $12.45{\pm}1.77%$, respectively. The carbon clearance assay indicated that the phagocytic activity of FPG and FPQ was higher than that of FPN. A clear discrimination among FPG, FPQ, and FPN was observed in the principal component analysis score plots. Seven compounds were confirmed to contribute strongly by loading plots, which may be the cause of differences in efficacy. Conclusion: This study provides basic information about the chemical and bioactive comparison of FPG, FPQ, and FPN, indicating that protopanaxtriol-type ginsenosides and malonyl-ginsenosides may play a key role in their enhancing immunity properties.

  • This research is an in-depth study on the differences of cosmetics advertising and brand representation between Korean companies and Chinese companies. In addition, it studies the preferences of cosmetics consumption in Korea and China. To study these topics, two major methods are applied to magazine advertising analysis and consumer research. Analysis objects are the magazine advertisements of the Korean brands Mamond and Laneige, which entered the China market more than 5 years ago; the 64 advertisements are evenly split between Koreans and Chinese. The objects of the survey are 470 females between the ages 20 and 30 (237 from Korea and 233 from China). The results were as follows. First, Chinese advertisements use intense appeal in which the types of advertisement appeal are highly preferred. Second, ordinary models are highly preferred. Second, (on the nationality of the models) Chinese and Korean models are preferred in comparison to western models. Third, (as shown in the survey) Koreans and Chinese preferred magazine advertisements with headlines and copies. Four, blue colors are commonly used in the advertisements; however, the survey shows that the Chinese consumers prefer gray colors. Furthermore, from this study, there is a significant dynamic between the brand image and consumer satisfaction as well as the re-purchase intention.
