  • Wooden dowels are commonly used to join the particleboard members together in many types of structures, But little information is available concerning their holding properties in domestic particleboard. This study was performed to determine the withdrawal loads and strengths on the effect of diameter of dowel and hole clearance. The test block was manufactured from 15 mm thick domestic particleboard. The dowel was manufactured 6, 8 and 10 mm diameters from korean castanea, korean pine and tuliptree. Research reported here indicates that withdrawal loads increase, but withdrawal strengths decrease, as the dowel diameter increases. This study also indicates that dowel withholding load and strength for particleboard less decrease than those for domestic wood as a hole clearance decreases.

  • This paper studied the materials of the furniture which the noble men used in Goryeo, based on the furniture material category of solid wood furniture, lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl and hardware. As for the solid wood furniture, the wood and furniture types are inferred based on the documents. The trees used for the wood furniture were zelkova, korean willow, pine, royal paulownia, maidenhair tree, korean pine, chinese juniper and elm. The furniture types were table, chair, wooden bench, small portable table, writing table, and folding screen. As to the types of lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl, most of them were hams with top, which were made of abalone shells. The features of the lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl were in detail and elaborate like the pattern of the full bloomed chrysanthemum. Writing tables were also made of lacquerware as pieces of furniture. Distinctively, the mother-of-pearl furniture material was popular enough to be used even in a horse saddle. Regarding the metal feldspar used as both a practical use and decoration, there are drop handle, hinge, the front basis, and lock seen in the artifacts, which were made of cast iron, bronze, and brass. Their manufacture techniques were eojamoon, bratticing and sheet metal. Through this study of the furniture materials used in Goryeo, it seems that Goryeo furniture focused on the functions rather than on the decorations, and in turn the forms were simple and basic. The technique of mother-of-pearl, a bit elaborate one, was used in the props furniture like kitchen wares, hams, or writing talbes. Probably, the solid wood is inferred to be used in a low wooden bench, a chair, and a table based on the documents.

  • We present the dendrochronological dates of Korean wooden furnitures in National Museum of Korea. Six of fourteen were successfully dated. Rice Chest (구 2225) was dated A.D. 1805 +. Others dated were Rice Chest (신수 9479; A.D. 1819), Rice Chest (신수 9475; A.D. $1826{\pm}10$), Ganghwa-Chest with a flap door (구 2341; A.D. $1842{\pm}10$), Ganghwa-Chest with a flap door (구 3124; A.D. $1859{\pm}10$), Chest with a flap door (신수 15731; A.D. $1865{\pm}10$). • Handling the manufacured goods is the most cost-consuming task in material handling system in wooden furniture industries. Fully automated warehouse for cartoned goods of a furniture manufacturing company was analized to provide plant engineers and managers with some important informations on the utility and profitability of the automated storage and retrieval system(AS/RS). Process-oriented simulation modeling tech-niques were used to describe the system and to propose some alternatives to promote the efficiency of AS/RS. Simulation report could be inter-preted as follows: 1. Warehouse for the furniture goods must be designed in accordance with reliable material handling program and constructed with suitable equipments depending on the specification of packed products. 2. An excess of palletized products induced the indigestion and the inefficiency of AS/RS of the furniture industry and put this high-costly system into the shade. 3. Overcrowded AS/RS of the furniture factories could regain its material handling function by cutting down the deposit of products into the automated warehouse. For this purpose, reducing the regular output and direct delivering the outside products to the destination should be considered as the definite counterplan. And additional operation of conventional handy warehouse was also expected to improve the efficiency of main AS/RS.

  • This paper reports the application of radiocarbon wiggle matching for Korean wooden artifacts such as furniture and Buddhist statues for precise dating. Ten biannual samples of 20 years (AD 1249-1268) for AMS (accelerator mass spectrometry) radiocarbon measurements were prepared from a board of the pedestal for Buddhist statue at Jeongsusa (temple) in Kangwhado, Korea, which was dendrochronologically dated. The average 95.4% confidence interval of radiocarbon dating without wiggle matching was 123 year. When wiggle matching technique was applied, it became 37 year, 3.3 times smaller than that without wiggle matching. The results indicated that wiggle matching technique using the calibration curve for northern hemisphere (IntCal04: International radiocarbon calibration curve announced in 2004) can produce precise dates for Korean wooden artifacts which possess as much as 20 tree rings.

Korean traditional architectural form and wooden furniture were improved by adding up an organic coordination in the interior space. Furniture adds beauty of life by being coordinated with the interior space with its particular characteristic in the form of architectural structure. Architecture and furniture are also being improved in a more natural and diverse way. Therefore, in this research, from the choice of the location, Korean traditional architecture is considered to be coordinated with the nature, and the technical skill is lessened to express its beauty. There is a presence of elegance yet robust combination of simplicity and beauty. In addition, the traditional architecture and wooden furniture are completely expressed structurally with coordination of the outstanding design and solid structure according to the thrifty living in the Confucian ideas which influenced the Korean traditional society. The representative of Korean traditional architecture, Baeheulrim pillar, has worked as motive because of its visual comfort caused by optical illusion and formative elements. The small portable dining table (Soban) which reflects the characteristic of Korean unique tradition and the sensitivity of Koreans has been reinterpreted through the motive in this research. As a result, it has shown the possibility as the design element to change the aesthetic structure. In the modern society, cultural identity plays a vital role. Therefore, this research can be used as reference for the new concept of furniture - making. It could be a combination of modern people, lifestyle and living space by creating the Korean image suitable for the modern society.

  • In this paper, conservation treatment processes for the wooden furniture in the Presidential Archives are introduced. Conservation treatment strategies for modern wooden cultural heritage have been increasingly studied. The current study uses materials similar to those used by the existing conservation treatment method. Material analysis showed that the chair(Lee136-2) and desk(Yun37) in the Presidential Archives are made of Dipterocarpaceae, and both are coated with two layers of varnishing. FT-IR analysis showed that the varnish has a similar spectrum to that of a nitrocellulose-based lacquer(Lee136-2) and top coat(Yun37) and confirmed that a synthetic material was used. Pollutants had adhered to the surface of the wooden furniture and it was also in structurally unstable condition because of cracks and damage to the varnish and wood. Therefore, a conservation treatment was carried out to restore the damaged areas to their original appearance using similar kinds of materials, based on data obtained by materials analysis.
