The treatment efficacy of oral administration of praziquantel against the blood-sucking monogenean Microcotyle sebastis under the commercial rockfish-culture conditions was evaluated. The quantity of praziquantel added to the food was calculated so that the amount of praziquantel ingested daily by fish was 200mg or 400mg/kg body weight (bw). The fish were fed a moist-pelleted fish meal supplemented with praziquantel at an rate of 0 (control), 200 or 400 mg of praziquantel per kg bw, respectively, for 3 times at an interval of 24 h. On 1 day to 8 days after the treatment, 10 fish were taken randomly from each net-pen daily (80 fish in each group in total), and the efficacy of each treatment was confirmed. Abundance of worms were significantly reduced in groups fed praziquantel-supplemented diets. The results clearly demonstrated that feeding the praziquantel-supplemented diet was effective for controlling M. sebastis infestation in practical commercial rockfish-culture systems without imposing any handling stress.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Kluyveromyces fragilis, Candida utilis and brewer's yeast as an additive in formulated diets containing different fish meal levels ($55{\%} and 45{\%}$) on growth and body composition of juvenile Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli). Juvenile rockfish (average weight, 2.6 g) were distributed into 24 tanks with 3 replication groups and fed eight isoproteic ($41{\%}$) and isolipidic ($11{\%}$) diets containing each level ($3{\%}$) of K. frayilis, C. utilis and brewer's yeast as an additive. Survival rate of fish was not affected by dietary fish meal level and yeast kind (P > 0.05). Weight gain of fish fed the control and diets containing C. utilis and brewer's yeast was not influenced by fish meal level (P > 0.05), Weight gain of fish fed the $55{\%}$ fish meal diet containing C. utilis and $45{\%}$ fish meal diets containing K. fragilis and C. utilis was lower than that of fish fed the control diet (P < 0.05). Feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed the control and diet containing brewer's yeast were not affected by fish meal level, but these value of fish fed the diets containing K, fragilis and C. utilis were lower in $45{\%}$ fish meal diets than in $55{\%}$ fish meal diets. Hepatosomatic index and liver lipid content of fish fed the diet containing C. utilis were decreased regardless of fish meal level (P < 0.05), Hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cell, plasma total protein and plasma total glucose were not affected by dietary fish meal levels and yeast supplements (P > 0.05). From the above results, it can be concluded that yeast supplement in this formulated diet for growth of juvenile rockfish is not necessary.
The growth and survival rate of larvae and juveniles from female rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) broodstock in vitellogenesis by injection of 3,5,3'-triiodo-L-thyronine $T_3$ with a dose of 20 mg/kg fish wt. were examined for 30 days and compared with sham-control fish injected dime-thyl sulfoxide and control fish. Larvae were fed with rotifers for first 5 days after parturition, rotifers and Artemia nauplii for next 10 days. And then, they were fed with Artemia nauplii and commercial diet. Growth of larvae and juveniles from maternal $T_3$injection was significantly faster than that of two controls, nevertheless, the condition factor was lower than that of controls. The whole body proximate analyses indicated that there were significant effects of $T_3$ injection on protein and lipid, but no significant on moisture and ash contents. Survival rate of the fish from maternal $T_3$injection was significantly higher than that of fish from the two controls. These results indicate that thyroid hormone supplements appear to confer a distinct advantage to larval and juvenile rockfish in early, fragile development stage.
An epizootic causing mortality among cultured marine finfishes occurred in 1999 in the province of Kyoungsang, Korea. The disease was characterized by the presence of enterocele, abdominal swelling, and gastroenteritis. The causative bacteria were isolated from olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), black rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli), turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) and the rearing water. These bacteria showed swarming activity on agar plates and yellowish or greenish colonies on thiosulfate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose (TCBS) agar plates, but no luminescence. The pathogen was identified as Vibrio harveyi based on morphological and biochemical characteristics and the sequence of l6S rDNA. The lethal doses (LD$_{50}$) of olive flounder and black rockfish were estimated to be $1.24\times10^6-1.36\times10^8$ and $3.24\times10^5-5.8\times10^7$ CFU/fish respectively following intraperitoneal injection.

The residue depletion of streptomycin was investigated in the olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli), and red sea bream (Pagrus major) after consecutive three days treatment with dipping water at a dose of 20 g/ton water. Fishes were sampled for muscle on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th day after treatment. Streptomycin concentrations were determined by high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. The recovery rates of streptomycin in muscle samples ranged from 87.2 to 102.3% and from 80.4 to 94.1% for the concentration of 0.05 mg/kg and 0.1 mg/kg, respectively. Streptomycin concentrations detected on the 1st day after treatment were 0.066, 0.058, and 0.073 mg/kg in muscles of olive flounder, rockfish, and red sea bream, respectively. At day 2, residue concentrations of all samples were believed to decrease to lower than 0.05 mg/kg, the detection limit. From results of the present study, a withdrawal period of streptomycin is proposed on 3 days after consecutive three days treatment with dipping administration at a dose of 20 g/ton water to avoid the presence of excessive residues of the edible muscles of olive flounder, rockfish, and red sea bream. The present study showed that residue concentrations of streptomycin decreased to below 0.05 mg/kg after treatment 2nd day.
Background: To minimize the use of antibiotics and to obtain a more sustainable fish culture and aquaculture industry, development of alternative natural source of immunostimulant to replace antibiotic in aquafeed is highly needed. Objective: Dietary inclusion effect of yacon (YC), ginger (GG), and blueberry (BB) on growth, body composition, and disease resistance of black rockfish against Vibrio anguillarum was compared to ethoxyquin (EQ). Methods: Four hundred eighty juvenile (an initial weight of 4.2 g) fish were randomly distributed into 12 of 50 L flowthrough tanks (forty fish per tank). Four experimental diets were prepared; the control (Con) diet with 0.01% EQ inclusion, and YC, GG, and BB diets at 1% each additive inclusion. Each additive was included into the experimental diets at the expense of wheat flour. Each diet was assigned to triplicate tanks of fish and hand-fed to satiation twice daily for 8 weeks. At the end of 8-week feeding trial, 20 fish from each tank fish were artificially infected by intraperitoneal injection with 0.1 mL of culture suspension of pathogenic V. anguillarum containing 3.3 × 106 cfu/mL respectively. Fish were monitored for the following 8 days after V. anguillarum infection and dead fish were removed every 6 h for the first 4 days and 12 h for the rest of the study. Results: Weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), and feed efficiency ratio (FER) of fish fed the YC diet was higher than those of fish fed all other diets. However, feed consumption, protein efficiency ratio, and protein retention was not affected by dietary additive. Moisture, crude protein, and crude lipid content of the whole body of fish were affected by dietary additive. Analysis of the Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that survival of fish fed the YC, BB, and GG diets was higher than the Con diet. Conclusion: Oral administration of YC can improve not only weight gain, SGR, and FER of black rockfish, but lower mortality of rockfish at occurrence of V. anguillarum.
The digestive tract of the rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli composed of pharynx, esophagus, stomach, intestine, anus and ten or eleven pyloric caeca. Pyloric caeca is blind sac of banana shape, and that is originated from pyloric portion of the stomach. The relative length of gut(RLG), that is length of digestive tract to standard length, is about 1.56(n=10). Esophageal muscularis consists of thin outer layer of longitudinal muscle and thick inner layer of circular muscle. Mucosal epithelium consists of columnar epithelium with short microvilli and contains numerous mucous secretory cell. The mucosal folds of the stomach are regular, and the muscularis consists of longitudinal, oblique and circular muscle layer. The chief cell of the gastric gland have a tubular mitochondria, endoplasmic reticula and numerous secretory granules in electron-dense. However, parietal cell contains small mitochondria, endoplasmic reticula and vacuoles in low electron density. Mucosal epithelium of the pyloric caeca and intestine composed of columnar epithelium, goblet cell, rodlet cell and dark cell. Columnar absorptive cell in the pyloric caeca and intestine contains well developed mitochondria, endoplasmic reticula, vesiculated granules in high electron density, pinocytotic vesicles and multivesicular body. Rodlet cell have a well developed cytoplasmic capsule and the endoplasmic reticula in the cytoplasm. Dark cell showing a high electron density in the cytoplasm and contains well developed mitochondria. Columnar epithelium of the intestine have a well developed intercellular junction and the microvilli which contains actin filament originated from the cytoplasm. Mucosal epithelium of the intestine have a longer microvilli and more abundant goblet cells than in the pyloric caeca.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of $\beta$-1,3 glucan on growth, hematological and body composition in juvenile korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli fed the white fish meal based diets for 6 weeks. Four experimental diets were formulated to contain control (without supplementation of glucan), 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.5% (this diet was fed to fish daily, bi-weekly as three different dietary treatments) $\beta$-1,3 glucan per kg diet (Control, $D_{0.05}$, $D_{0.1}$, $D_{0.5}$, $B_{0.05}$, $B_{0.1}$, $B_{0.5}$). Fish averaging $4.0\pm0.1g$ (mean$\pm$SD) were randomly distributed in each aquarium as triplicate groups of 23 fish. Weight gain (WG, %) and specific growth rate (SGR, %) of fish fed $D_{0.5}$ diet were significantly lower than those of fish fed the other diets (P<0.05). Feed efficiency (FE) of fish fed $B_{0.05}$ diet was significantly higher than those of fish fed $D_{0.1}$, $D_{0.5}$, $B_{0.1}$ and $B_{0.5}$ diets (P<0.05). Protein efficiency ratio (PER) of fish fed $B_{0.05}$ diet was significantly higher than those of fish fed $D_{0.1}$ and $D_{0.5}$ diets (P<0.05). According to the results, the supplementation of 0.05% $\beta$-1,3 glucan daily and/or biweekly is optimum in juvenile Korean rockfish.
Two experiments were conducted to investigate the utilization of various types of fish meal as dietary protein sources in Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli). In the first experiment, averaging 5.7 g fish were divided into two groups and fed one of diets containing $55\%$ steam-dried white fish meal (SWFM) or $55\%$ brown fish meal (BFM) for 45 days. Weight gain and feed efficiency from fish fed SWFM were significantly (P<0.05) higher than those from fish fed BFM diet. However, daily feed intake, protein retention and lipid retention were not influenced by the two different diets. In the second experiment, averaging 86.6 g fish were divided into six groups and fed one of diets containing $56\%$ SWFM, $28\%\;SWFM+31\%$ flame-dried white fish meal (FWFM), $62\%\;FWFM,\;28\%\;SWFM+31\%\;BFM,\;56\%\;BFM$, or $28\%\;SWFM+29\%$ hydrolyzed fish protein (HFP) for 21 weeks. No significant differences were found among fish fed the six different diets in weight gain, feed efficiency, condition factor, whole body composition, and relative liver weight. Results of the present studies indicated that fish size should be considered in selecting feed ingredients and also feed cost could be lowered by replacing SWFM with FWFM or BFM in growing Korean rockfish diet.

On protein equivalence base, fishmeal (FM) was replaced by lysine cell mass (LCM) in selected different diets in Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli (Hilgendorf) Eight experimental diets were formulated to contain 100% FM (LC $M_{0}$), 90% FM+10% LCM (LC $M_{10}$),80% FM+20% LCM (LC $M_{20}$), 70% FM+30% LCM (LC $M_{30}$), 60% FM+40% LCM (LC $M_{40}$ ), 70% FH+30% LCM+lysine (LC $M_{+Lys}$), 60% FM+40% LCM+lysine (LC $M_{40+Lys}$), and 50% FM+50% LCM+lysine (LC $M_{50+Lys}$). Experimental individuals of the fish (12.6 g) were randomly fed on one of the experimental diets. After 6 weeks of feeding trial, weight gain (WG) and feed efficiency (FE) of fish fed LC $M_{0}$ diet was significantly (P〈0.05) higher than those of fish fed LC $M_{20}$, LC $M_{30}$, LC $M_{40}$ , LC $M_{30+Lys}$, LC $M_{40+Lys}$, and LC $M_{50+Lys}$ diets, however, there was no significant difference in WG of fish fed LC $M_{0}$ and LC $M_{10}$ diets. Supplementation of lysine has no effect on WG. There was no significant difference in condition factor (CF) of fish fed LC $M_{0}$, LC $M_{10}$ and LC $M_{20}$ diets. Hemoglobin (Hb) of fish fed LC $M_{0}$, LC $M_{10}$, LC $M_{20}$, LC $M_{30}$, LC $M_{40}$ , LC $M_{30+Lys}$, and LC $M_{40+Lys}$, diets were not significantly different from each other. No significant differences were observed in hematocrit (PCV) and hepatosomatic index (HSI) among all dietary treatments. Apparent digestibility of dry matter (ADM) and protein (ADP) of diets significantly decreased with increase in dietary LCM level, though there was no difference in ADM and ADP between LC $M_{0}$ and LC $M_{10}$. These results indicate that LCM could replace up to 10% of fishmeal in Korean rockfish diets.ish diets.iets.ish diets.s.ish diets.
