  • Many regions around the world are vulnerable to rainfall-induced slope failures. A variety of methods have been proposed for revealing the mechanism of slope failure initiation. Current analysis methods, however, do not consider the effects of non-homogeneous soil profiles and variable hydraulic responses on rainfall-induced slope failures. In this study, probabilistic stability analyses were conducted for weathered residual soil slopes with different soil thickness overlying impermeable bedrock to study the rainfall-induced failure mechanisms depending on the soil thickness. A series of seepage and stability analyses of an infinite slope based on one-dimensional random fields were performed to consider the effects of uncertainty due to the spatial heterogeneity of hydraulic conductivity on the failure of unsaturated slopes due to rainfall infiltration. The results showed that a probabilistic framework can be used to efficiently consider various failure patterns caused by spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity in rainfall infiltration assessment for a infinite slope.

  • In order to figure out the future drought characteristics of the Jeonju plains, the major crop production area in Korea, daily agricultural drought indexes based on soil water balance were calculated for the relevant 12.5 km by 12.5 km grid cell using the weather data generated by the RCP8.5 climate scenario during 1951-2100. The calculations were grouped into five climatological normal years, the past (1951-1980), the present (1981-2010), and the three futures (2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2100). Results showed that the soil moisture conditions in early spring, worst for both the past and present normal years, will ameliorate gradually in the future and the crop water stress in spring season was projected to become negligible by the end of this century. Furthermore, the drought frequency in early spring was projected to diminish, resulting in rare occurrence of spring drought by that time. However, the result also showed that the soil moisture conditions during the summer season (when most crops grow in Jeonju plain) will deteriorate and the drought incidence will be more frequent than in the past or present period.

  • Laboratory and in-situ tests were conducted to evaluate the cone factors for the layers with low plasticity containing a lot of silty and sand soils from the west coast (Incheon, Hwaseong and Gunsan areas) and its applicability was evaluated based on these results. The cone factors were evaluated from 19 to 23 based on unconfined compression strengths (qu), from 13 to 13.8 based on simple CU strengths and from 11.6 to 13.1 based on field vane strengths, respectively. The unconfined compression strengths of undisturbed silty soil samples with low plasticity were considerably underestimated due to the change of in-situ residual effective stress during sampling. Half of unconfined compression strength (qu/2) based cone factors of silty soils with low plasticity fluctuated and were approximately 1.8 times higher than simple CU based values of these soils. When evaluating cone factors of these soils, it should be judged overall on the physical properties such as the grain size distribution and soil plasticity and on the fluctuation of the corrected cone resistance and the sleeve friction due to the distribution of sandseam in the ground including pore pressure parameter.

  • Veterinary antibiotics (VAs) has been used to treat animal disease and to increase animal weight as growth promoter. However, abused usage of VAs can cause production of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment and additionally, residual of VAs in soil can be transferred into crops. Therefore, main objective of this research was to examine bioaccumulation of VAs in sprouts (red cabbage, Brassica Olearacea L. var. Capitata f. rubra and red radish, Raphanus sativus) with hydroponic method. Total of 7 VAs in 2 different classes of VAs (tetracyclcines: tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, sulfonamides: sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethazine, sulfamethiazole, macrolides: tylosin) were evaluated and experiment was conducted with solid phase extraction (SPE)/high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS/MS). Initial spiked concentration of 7 VAs was $5mg\;L^{-1}$ and cultivation period was 8 days. Result showed that growth of sprouts was inhibited about 23-27% when VAs was introduced. Amount of bioaccumulated VAs was also differed depending on class of VAs. The highest amount of bioaccmulated VAs was tetracycline and sulfamethoxazole in each class with a concentration of 4.05, $7.73mg\;kg^{-1}$ respectively. Calculated transfer ratio of VAs into crops was also ranged 0.38-54.27%. Overall, bioaccumulation of VAs in crops can be varied depending on crop species and class of VAs. However, further research should be conducted to verify bioaccumulation of VAs in crops in the soil environment.

  • In order to investigate organic association of fallout cesium, strontium and plutonium in the soil, soil samples influenced by fallout from nuclear weapon testings were treated with alkali (0.1 M-sodium hydroxide solution) to extract organic acids. After extraction, the resultant three fractions (sedimentary residue, humic and fulvic acid fractions) were subjected to the r-ray spectrometric analysis for $^{137}$ Cs, and radiochemical analysis for gosr and $^{239,240}$Pu. Alkali extraction experiments showed that a lot of $^{ 239,240}$Pu was extracted to organic acids from the soil samples, whereas most of $^{137}$ Cs and $^{90}$ Sr remained in residual fraction. Less than 10% of the total $^{137}$ Cs and $^{90}$ Sr was found in the organic fraction. The concentrations of $^{137}$ Cs and $^{90}$ Sr associated with humic fractions were higher than those with the corresponding fulvic fractions. It was found that more than 40% of the total $^{239,240}$Pu was associated with the organic fraction of soils. In contrast with $^{137}$ Cs and $^{90}$ Sr, $^{239,240}$Pu associated with vulvic fractions was much higher than in humic fractions.

  • Microplastics are generated by the breakdown of plastic wastes in agricultural soil and residual pesticides in agricultural soil can adsorb on microplastics. In this study, the sorption characteristics of procymidone (PCM) and one of its metabolites, 3,5-dichloroaniline (DCA), on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics were investigated. The sorption and desorption tests were carried out for 72 h using LDPE or PVC microplastic films to study the sorption isotherms of PCM and DCA and kinetics for sorption and desorption of PCM. The results show that the sorption data of PCM and DCA were better described by the Freundlich isotherm model (R2=0.7568-0.9915) than the Langmuir isotherm model (R2=0.0545-0.5889). The sorption potential of PVC for both PCM and DCA was greater than that of LDPE. The sorption data of PCM on PVC and LDPE were fitted better to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model than the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The PCM sorption on LDPE was about three times faster than that on PVC. Both microplastic films released the sorbed PCM back to water, and more PCM was released from PVC than LDPE, but the desorption rate was faster with LDPE than PVC. Overall, the results show that different microplastics have different sorption characteristics for different chemicals. Also, the sorbed chemicals can be released back to environment suggesting the potential of contaminant spread by microplastics. Thus, the management practices of microplastics in agricultural soil need to consider their interaction with the chemical contaminants in soil.

  • This experiment was conducted to identify the relationships of concentration with phytotoxic rate of dinitroamide and acid amide herbicides which have showed the longest residual period in soil. Four herbicides treated showed greater inhibition on roots than shoots, greater inhibition by herbicides was obtained for Italian ryegrass than for Radish. Nitralin, pendimethalin, and ethalfluralin at 0.01ppm gave about 20% inhibition of Italian ryegrass roots, whereas about 47% inhibition was obtained with napropamide. Fifty percent inhibition($I_{50}$) of roots and shoots of Italian ryegrass was 0.036 and 0.132ppm for nitralin. 0.063 and 0.097ppm for pendimethalin. 0.042 and 0.092ppm for ethalfluralin. 0.027 and 0.071ppm for napropamide respectively. On the other hand, $I_{50}$ of roots and shoots of Radish was 1.028 and over 10ppm for nitralin. 1.925 and 4.885ppm for pendimethalin, 2.669 and over 10ppm for ethalfluralin, and 0.515 and over 10ppm for napropamide respectively. There was positive correlation between the concentration of herbicides and growth inhibition of Italian ryegrass and radish.

  • Fly ash application with a rate 0, 50, 100, $150Mg\;ha^{-1}$ in clay loam paddy, which had properties of pH 5.3 and low contents of silicate, gave a positively residual effects on the growth of rice crop subsequent to malting barley. The responses of rice yields to fly ash application were in the order of bituminous coal fly ash(BCFA) 100 > 150 > 50 > anthracite fly ash(AFA) 50 > 100 > none > AFA $150Mg\;ha^{-1}$. As a result, yields responses of milled rice were ranged from $6.2(50Mg\;ha^{-1}){\sim}14.4%(100Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by BCFA and from $-0.6(150Mg\;ha^{-1}){\sim}6.6%(50Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by AFA showing maximum yields of 5.084 and $4.738Mg\;ha^{-1}$ by the former and the latter, respectively. Rice plant showed lodging indices ranging from $20(50Mg\;ha^{-1}){\sim}40%(150Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by BCFA and from $1.3(150Mg\;ha^{-1}){\sim}15%(50Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by AFA at harvesting stage. In especial, soils applicated with BCFA contained a good fertility in terms of pH, available $P_2O_5$ and $SiO_2$, and exchangeable Ca and Mg etc. so that possibly harbored 3yr-residual effects of the fly ash on crop subsequent to this rice.

  • Field experiments were conducted on the cropping system soybean-barley-soybean to investigate the effect of phosphorus and wollastonite application, effective application methods of phosphrus, and their residual effect in a typical Jeju island volcanic ash soil when the fertilizers were applied to the first crop of the three crops sequence. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Response of phosphorus was higher for barley than for soybean. The maximum application rate of phosphate was extimated to be 10-20kg/l0a for cultivation of soybean first crop) and 100kg/l0a for barley (second crop). Barley yield under 100kg/l0a of phosphate was double as compared to the no phosphate plot. 2. With application of 100kg/10a phosphate at the sowing time of soybean, the available phosphate in the soil after harvesting of soybean was increased to 175ppm but decreased to 60 ppm by cultivation of barley (second crop.) On the other hand, the phosphate absorption coefficient was 1,146mg/100g after soybean harvest but increased to 1,764mg/100g after barley harvest. 3. High residual effect was found in the plot to which phosphate applied with compost in the sowing band. 4. Response to wollastonite under heavy application of phosphate was high and residual effect was also great. 5. Response of soybean to wollastonite was higher than that of barley. Application of wollastonite increased the yield of all three crops soybean (first crop) by 30%, barley (second crop) by 12% and soybean (third) by 20%, respectively. Highest yield was obtained from the 1,000kg/10a wollastonite treatment for soybean and 500kg/l0a for barley.

  • The Low Temperature Thermal Desorption (LTTD) System equipped with a soil transfer unit, a rotary kiln, RTO, cyclones and a bag filter etc. was developed. The LTTD system was designed to be economically operated using LPG as a fuel and recirculating the discharged gas from the LTTD system through RTO. For the performance test of LTTD system the soil contaminated with light and heavy oils (2,690 mg TPH/kg soil) and with particle sizes below 50 mm was fed into the rotary kiln of LTTD system at 7$m^3$/hr with retention time of 15 minutes. Operation temperatures of LTTD system for the removal of soil TPH were $567^{\circ}C$ and $692^{\circ}C$. The residual TPH after treatment was 46 mg/kg and 32mg/kg respectively at each temperature condition, which shows high TPH removal efficiencies of the developed LTTD as 98.3% and 98.9%.
