  • The Purpose of this study is to explore if people with intellectual disabilities can play a role as 'meaningful informants' in research process in Korea, by challenging the existing paradigm which consists of suspicion on the communication ability of people with intellectual disabilities and truthlessness of their statements, which results in ignorance on the covered life of people with intellectual disabilities. In this research, lessons which could learn through reinterpretation of my research experience are as follows. Firstly, the deficits of communication ability can be supplemented with restructuring interview instruments such as research questions, visual aids etc and adopting conversation analysis methods. Secondly, Suspicion on the truthlessness of their statements can be restructured by epistemological and methodological reinterpretation on the representation of social reality. Thirdly, the mechanism of exclusion and oppression according to the ignorance can be substituted by 'uncovering the life of people with intellectual disabilities', which can be basis of reconstructing the contents of programmes in the disability service centers and disability policies in the government. With these research results it could be argued that there needs to include people with intellectual disabilities as meaningful informants in the research projects funded by the government and also to provide people with intellectual disabilities with diverse roles in the research process by virtue of the development of qualitative research methods in the near future.

  • In modern society, people will obtain the necessary goods and find meaning of himself and his community through jobs. The meaning of job for people with disabilities is identical with people's with non-disabilities and people with disabilities will live as a member of society through jobs. Because people with hearing impairment have a problem about job such as the short longevity and high turnover, vocational aptitude test which evaluates psychological characteristics, aptitudes and interests is necessary for them. In this paper, we design and evaluate the picture vocational interest inventory supporting the Internet as a vocational aptitude test for people with hearing impairment. We use the picture vocational interest inventory of Korean Employment Development Institute as a implementation target. The previous tests for people with hearing impairment have a problem which an examinee, an examiner and a sign language interpreter are involved in the test at the same space and time. Therefore, our picture vocational interest inventory has no limitation of time and space because it processes on the Internet.

  • In this paper, we propose a real-time system for counting people. The proposed system uses an impulse radio ultra-wideband(IR-UWB) radar to estimate the number of people in a given location. The proposed system uses learning-based classification methods to count people more accurately. In other words, a feature vector database is constructed by exploiting the pattern of reflected signals, which depends on the number of people. Subsequently, a classifier is trained using this database. When a newly received signal data is acquired, the system automatically counts people using the pre-trained classifier. We validated the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by presenting the results of real-time estimation of the number of people changing from 0 to 10 in an indoor environment.

  • Background: Percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic discectomy (PTED) has been widely used in the treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases. Epidural injection of steroids can reduce the incidence and duration of postoperative pain in a short period of time. Although steroids are widely believed to reduce the effect of surgical trauma, the observation indicators are not uniform, especially the long-term effects, so the problem remains controversial. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to evaluate the efficacy of epidural steroids following PTED. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Database from 1980 to June 2021 to identify randomized and non-randomized controlled trials comparing epidural steroids and saline alone following PTED. The primary outcomes included postoperative pain at least 6 months as assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). The secondary outcomes included length of hospital stay and the time of return to work. Results: A total of 451 patients were included in three randomized and two non-randomized controlled trials. The primary outcomes, including VAS and ODI scores, did not differ significantly between epidural steroids following PTED and saline alone. There were no significant intergroup differences in length of hospital stay. Epidural steroids were shown to be superior in terms of the time to return to work (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Intraoperative epidural steroids did not provide significant benefits, leg pain control, improvement in ODI scores, and length of stay in the hospital, but it can enable the patient to return to work faster.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate service quality of department stores located in Daegu and to examine the effects of service quality on customer satisfaction and store patronage. Data(N=285) were analyzed, using factor analysis, 1-test, ANOVA and regression analysis. The results suggest that service quality was divided into 3 dimensions (reliability, tangibles, empathy) and that service quality enhanced customer satisfaction and store patronage. Specifically, tangibles had a positive effect on customer satisfaction, and reliability had a positive effect on store patronage. Also, personal characteristics were related to service quality, customer satisfaction and store patronage. For instance, male customers evaluated tangibles of service quality more positively than female customers. The married evaluated service quality, customer satisfaction and store patronage more positively than the single. While people aged above 36 yews evaluated reliability and empathy of service quality more positively than people aged below 35 years, people in their 20s evaluated tangibles more positively than people in their 30s. People in a higher income bracket (i. e., \301,000,000- \400,000,000) evaluated reliability and empathy of service quality and store patronage most positively, while people in a lower bracket (i. e., below \200,000,000) evaluated most negatively.

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate the effect of self-esteem on perceived stigma in high school students toward people with disabilities. Methods: The participants in this study were 140 high school students from Gyeonggi Province. Data were collected during May 2013. Structured questionnaires were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive by statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and simple regression analysis with the SPSS 19.0 program. Results: The major findings of this study are as follows: There was a significant relationship between stigma toward people with disabilities and self-esteem among the high school students (r=-.205, p=.015). There was also a significant relationship between relationships with friends (r=.291, p<.001), health statement (r=.400, p<.001) and self-esteem among the high school students. Self-esteem explained 3.5% of the variance in high school students' stigma toward people with disabilities (F=6.041, p=.015). Conclusion: Findings of this study suggest a need to develop education to increase self-esteem as a strategy to decrease high school students' stigma toward people with disabilities. Also, findings of this study suggest the need for repeated study on the relationship between self-esteem and stigma toward people with disabilities among adults.

People tended to live in a monocultural society and new cultures were infused in controlled and confined manners, however, people now live and eat in a continuously changing multicultural society Multicultural societies are emerged from the translocation of people (immigration) and, in a larger sense, globalization. Immigrants are faced with various and different cultures from their own, resulting in excitements and agonies in finding balance among many cultures. People who have not translocated themselves must also deal with various imported foreign cultures from fastfood restaurants to food beliefs. This lecture will use Korean Americans as an example to discuss how immigrants navigate different cultures and environments and how acculturation, the process of adaptation, affects their diet and health. In addition, how globalization has changed people's eatery will be briefly discussed. Understanding impacts of living and eating in a multicultural society is meaningful and useful to find effective approaches to promote healthy lifestyles to people in this fast changing times.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate factors influencing suicidal ideation in people with mental disorder. Methods: The subjects were 176 people with mental disorder from community mental health centers, social rehabilitation facilities, and university hospital psychiatric outpatient departments. The instruments used included a suicidal ideation questionnaire, a self-esteem scale, a spiritual well-being scale, a family support scale, and a professional support scale. Data were analyzed with t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical regression analysis. Results: Suicidal ideation was influenced by age, history of suicidal attempts, and existential spiritual well-being. This study shows that suicidal ideation has negative correlation with existential spiritual well-being, self-esteem, family support, and age. Existential spiritual well-being, history of suicidal attempts, and age accounted for 30% regarding suicidal ideation in people with mental disorder. Conclusion: The lower existential spiritual well-being and age, the higher suicidal ideation. And also suicidal ideation was higher in people who had attempted suicide than in those who had not. Based on the outcomes of this study, it is necessary to design an intervention program that emphasizes existential spiritual well-being in order to decrease suicidal ideation in young people with mental disorder.
