  • This study is a trial to syustematize the types of Minga(house of the lower class) that is distributed in the whole Korean penninsula. It is thought that, it can be systematised by using the method of five step' assortment shich is able to divide the types of Minga. Five steps are as follows: 1. The system of appearance and evolution of floor 2. The system of forms 3. Areal distribution of forms 4. State of gathering of living spaces 5. Variety of forms

  • Three historical earthquake catalogues were compared with each other in the view of frequency of events per century, cumulative magnitude distribution, and annual earthquake occurrence rate in each unit grid of 0.1°by 0.1°. And, a method to determine earthquake epicenters and magnitudes was proposed given the historical earthquake data. With this method, the epicenters and magnitudes of future earthquakes in Korean penninsula for 1,000 years were generated with each earthquake catalogue. Earthquake PGAs with 10% exceedance probability in Seoul were calculated for each catalogue and compared.

  • The Food Problem of North Korea is well known to all of us. And we, South-Koreans, are oblidged to solve the food problem of North Korea because we should prepare and cope with the reunification of Korean Penninsula in the near future. Although many organizations of the UN (including Korea) are engaged in food-support to North Korea from the humanitarian viewpoint, a great many people are disclosed to the starvation for the food deficiency. Now how to solve the food problem of North Korea? It is the agro-cooperation between South and North Korea. The most realistic method among them is the agro-cultivation in contract.

  • This study on Pemphigidae was based on the specimens collected from May 1989 to April 1993, at 16 localities of southern part of Korean Penninsula. As a result, 11 species of 7 genera were identified. Of these, four species (Colophina zelkovae, Prociphilus chaenomelis, Tetraneura pumilae, T. iriensis) are new to science. These four species were described and drawn.

  • More than 650 numbers of water well ranging in depth from 100M to 200M were installed in South Korean Penninsula during the last decade for the purpose of industrial use and municipal water supply. Those data were compiled and synthesized by writer to determine their hydrogeologic occurences in accordance with their geologic and areal characteristics. Rocks yielding the deep seated ground water beared in the geologic primary and secondary porosities are classified into 6 groups according to their geologic, hydrogeologic, and topographic characteristics, that are: volcanic, sedimentary, meta-sediment and/or schist, andesitic, gneissic, and granitic rocks. The order of ground water productivity of the groups is as written above. Even granitic rocks including porphyries, granite, and intermediate and basic plutonic rocks is considered to be the most poorest ground water yielding group among 6, it's average yield form a single well with average drilling depth of 116M is about 225 cubic meters per day if it's drilling site is properly located. Generally speaking, seizable geologic structures such as fractured, sheared, and faulted zone at the flat surface and valley center yield almost 310% more of deep seated bet rock ground water in comparision with minor structures of joints, bedding planes, and so on that are occured at high land. 50 numbers of water well drilled at crystalline rocks were specially checked and measured it's ground water yie 1ds at each drilled depth to determine each interval's productivity while hammer drilling was going on. The results indicate that the specific capacity and yield of each water well at a depth below 70M to 80M was almost neglegible. It means that optimum well depth of crystalline rocks, except the area having seizable geologic structures, shall be not deeper than 80M.

  • In the current study, inhibitory activity of 8 selected Korean edible plants of Lamiaceae family against $\alpha$-glucosidases, prepared from rat small intestine acetone powder was evaluated. Total flavonoids and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) were also investigated. Methyl alcohol extracts of Scutellaria indica (SI) had the highest $\alpha$-glucosidase inhibitory activity relevant for potentially managing hyperglycemia, followed by Clinopodium gracile (CG) and Thymus quinquecostatus (TQ). These 3 species also showed significant antioxidant activity in ORAC system. The $\alpha$-glucosidase inhibitory activity of the extracts was compared to selected phenolics. Among the standard phenolics tested quercetin which was major flavonoid in the extracts had the highest $\alpha$-glucosidase inhibitory activity. CG, TQ, and SI which had high quercetin content and ORAC values also exhibited significant sucrase inhibitory activity. Results suggested that selected 3 Korean Lamiaceae species have the potential development of effective dietary strategy for postprandial hyperglycemia and oxidative stress-linked diabetes complications.

  • South Korea has the defense burdensharing agreement with the United States in reference to the U.S. troops stationed in Korea since 1991, based on Special Measure Agreement(SMA). Due to the growth of Korea's economic power and the U.S. provision of the security environment on Korean penninsula, the U.S. government steadily demanded the rise of contributions to common defense from South Korea and South Korea accepted most of the U.S. requests without proper principles of negotiation concerning the cost sharing. This paper analyzes the systems of the Korea-U.S. cost sharing program through a systems thinking, that yields desirable results with a little effort. The three policy leverages are: 1) the development of negotiation principles; 2) the policy making closely linked with National Defense Reform Basic Plan; 3) the policy making with responsibility burdensharing than cost burdensharing. This paper findings will contribute to the developing the Korea-U.S. cost sharing program by providing policy-makers and policy-practitioners with systematic understanding and insight into the dynamics of the program. Also, this will enable the program to execute more effectively with a concrete formula.
