  • This study started with the awareness that the review of the historical origins of Korean broadcasting will be of great significance in exploring the future of Korean broadcasting, and examined the various "origins" of Korean broadcasting - colonial, Cold War, totalitarian, neoliberal. Based on the theoretical background of "media archaeology", the historical 'origin' of Korean broadcasting was applied to track the origin of Hallyu(the Korean Wave) in the 21st century by comprehensively examining the political and economic motives of the time, the state's situational awareness of problems, major broadcasting policies and broadcasting realities. As a result of the study, it came to the tentative conclusion that the historical origin of the Hallyu, which began to be formed in the 1980s, originated from the three origins of Korean broadcasting and the "synthetic mixture" in the subsequent development process.

  • This paper is a study on the life and clinical reasoning of Kim Goo Young (1958-2014). Offering a new perspective through his interpretation of Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑), Kim introduced his unique theory of Korean medicine, 'The Theory of Byeongin (病因論)'. Kim recognized the confusing situation of communication between people studying Korean medicine and tried to make a new standard based on the principle that many people can share. 'The Theory of Byeongin' offers a newly constituted "Donguibogam" focusing on 'Byeongin' (病因, pathologic origin) which can be translated as the cause of a disease. In so doing Kim recognized 'Byeongin' as the most important factor in 'Byeonjeung' (辨證, classifying the origin), or the classification method of symptoms. In addition, Kim recognized how 'Byeongin' was considered to be a diseased lifestyle, and tried interpreting. The patient's lifestyle to treat diseases. As a result, 'The Theory of Byeongin' is a theory consisting of an intuitive structure, reducing notable elements like Yin Yang Five Movement theory. The theory's significant characteristic is its easy application in clinical settings due the established core principles which are based on Kim's insight and clinical experience. This study contributes to the understanding of the theoretical and clinical development of Korean medicine through deeper studies on 'The Theory of Byeongin' and Kim's medical theory.

  • The role of fat is important from nutritional standpoint. The physiological functions of fat are energy yielding as well as the carrier of fat soluble vitamins, with special activities of essential fatty acids. It is fortunate that Korean families prefer to use vegetable oils rather than those from animal origin. But the problems are focused on better qaulity of food oils with attempt to exploit the available resources. This study was undertaken to inevestigate the fatty acid compositions of Korean origin both from conventional and unconventional resources of gas-liquid chromatography. The results obtained are as follows. 1. The total lipid contents of seeds of red pepper, Korean squash, sesame, perilla (var Japonica), and Korean pine nuts and walnuts were 24.3%, 56.6%, 56.4%, 46.9%, 69.8%, and 67.2%, respectively. 2. The saponification numbers of samples ranged from 190 to 200. It showed that the mean molecular weights of fatty acids composing the lipids were very much closed each other. 3. Iodine numbers of varing seed oils ranged from 96.5 of Korean squash seed oil to 124.6 of walnut oil. Oils obtained from squash seeds and sesame seeds showed significantly lower value, while others ranged from 122 to 125. 4. In the fatty acid compositions, squash seed oil was composed mainly of unsaturated fatty acids, 74.9% of which was oleic acid, whereas red pepper seed oil, pine nut oil, and sesame oil contained linoleic acid as a major component showing 64.4%, 56%, 48.8%, and 47.8%, respectively. In perilla seed oil, the amounts of linoleic and linolenic acids were 14.1% and 58%, respectively which meant nearly three-fourths of the total fatty acidsbeing the unsaturated essential fatty acids. This study will encourage the use of these conventional and unconventional vegetable oils which have highr ratios of polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acids.

  • The objectives of this study are to consider about the research of a costume and a discussion about a system of costume by practical science scholar in the late period of Chosun Dynasty. The result are descrived as follows: 1. The purpose that practical sciellce scholars researched a costulne was not only the intellectual research but also to make a basis in order to reform a uncorrected costume's system. Their study had two point. The one was the investigating research about the origin and change of the costume. The other was the study about a formation of costume. 2. The practical science scholars determined the directions to reform a wrong costumes' system on the basis of the research about a costume. They had three directions. Those were a conservatism, a rationalism to think the realities of life and a reformation. 3. The practical science scholars' thinking was to pursue the origin form and the practical use. This two axis show the direction to improve our costulne's culture now a day.

  • Historical origins of both personal names and place names in Korea are reviewed. It is shown that names of native origin have been largely replaced by those of Sino-Korean names. Some statistics are given on the basis of the 2000 census data in South Korea. A unique method of naming personal names which contain a generation marker called hangnyol is reviewed. This enables the person to figure out one's position and others in the family tree up to as many as ten generations without going consulting the book of genealogy. While this practice had a role to play in a vertically structured society where seniority is important, it is less practiced as the society is becoming more egalitarian, so that native names, not writable in Chinese characters, are on the rise. In this global age, a person is not just a member of his family or clan, s/he is also a member of the international community. The author proposes several things that should be considered in naming to fit the modern global age: euphony of names, ambiguity, possible bad connotations when Romanized, unintended homophones with comic meanings, etc.

  • A case of large aneurysm arising from the distal end of an azygous A2 segment is presented. Multiple clip application inadvertently tore the aneurysmal neck, resulting in near avulsion of a right pericallosal artery origin. After an unsuccessful attempt to repair the avulsion, it was treated by occlusion of the origin of the pericallosal artery and an A4-A4 anterior cerebral artery in situ bypass without neurological deficits. The surgical technique and previous reports onside-to-side in situ bypass are discussed.

  • In recent years the acoustic emission technique has been increasingly applied for detecting flaw s and cracks in materials either under testing or in service. It is important that what is the origin of AE signals detected by AE transducers. The purpose of this paper is to detect AE source on ductile material such as pressure vessel steel, A533B. As the results of experimentation, the increase of AE events number is proportional to the increase of the volume of plain strain zone. The origin of AE signals is fracture of MnS inclusions which have small amplitude of AE waves.

  • The structure-property relations of ternary copper chalcogenides, $TlCu_{3-x}S_2$ and $\alpha-BaCu_{2-x}S_2$ are examined. The density of states, band dispersions, and Fermi surfaces of these compounds are investigated to verify the reason of the metal-insulator transitions by extended Huckel tight-binding band calculations. The origin of the metalinsulator transitions of non-stoichiometric $TlCu_{3-x}S_2$ and $\alpha-BaCu_{2-x}S_2$ is thought to be the electronic instability induced by their Fermi surface nesting.
