Although some of pathologic findings are suggested, but the exact causes and mechanisms are not yet known in Western Medicine. Hwangryeonhaedok-Tang(HRHDT) is an antiinflammatory, antipyretic and detoxifying herb decoction. In this report, we would like to share our experience of acne treatment with HRHDT. Methods : We had treated several patients with acne, facial flushing and uprising febrile sensation on face using oral administration and external application of HRHDT. HRHDT is basically made up with Scutellariae Radix, Coptidis Rhizoma, Phellodendri Cortex and Gardeniae Fructus. In this trial, several other herbs were added according to the individual patient's accompanying symptoms. After the decoction of herbs in amount for 10 days, $Yogourmet^{(R)}$ Kefir Starter 10 g was added to the herbal solution that was then fermented in an incubator at $25^{\circ}C$ for 72 hours, and divided into 30 doses. Results : Photographies were taken before and after the treatment. The severities of acne were evaluated with these photos according to the Korean Acne Grading System(KAGS). As results, we observed dramatic clinical improvements and the decreases of KAGS grades after the average treatment period of 8 weeks. The medication was orally administered 3 times a day and the external treatment was applied average twice a week during the whole treatment period. Conclusions : From these results, HRHDT may be considered as a good prescription for the febrile and toxic type of acne patients.

In the distribution of age, 10S was $21.5\%,\;and\;20S\;20\%$ at the first visit. 2. In the distribution of season, the peak incidence occured in Spring ($35.4\%$) and next incidence in Winter ($20\%$). 3. In the distribution of duration, $41.5\%$ was between 1 year and 5 years, $20\%$ between 1 month and 6 months, $12.3\%$ between 6 months and 1 year, $9.2\%$ between 5 years and 10 years, $7.7\%$ over 10 years. 4. In regard to the itching lesion, $66.2\%$ showed pruritus throughout the whole body, including partially $15.4\%$ in their heads and faces, $12.3\%$ in their hands and legs, and $6.3\%$ in their shoulders, sides and hips. 5. In the 35 patients, who were confirmed to show apparent result by continual treatment, curative rate was more than $57.6\%$. According to above results, we can confirm that efficacy of therapeutic measures by the oriental medicine on pruritic dermatoses was increased in proportion to therapeutic duration and we feel sure that the therapeutic efficacy can be gradually increased as we expect to make a deep study of the disease and to give correct medical treatment to the nature of the disease.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the effectiveness of Korean medical treatment on 222 patients with alopecia areata. Methods : The subjects of this study were 222 patients who had received Korean medical treatment among the patients who visited the Balmer's Korean Medicine Clinic from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2017. The extent of the alopecia areata was measured every month to determine the improvement. We analyzed the relationship between the types of alopecia areata, the extent of hair loss, duration of illness, age at first visit, and the treatment of alopecia areata. Results : 1. There were 100 males(45.0%) and 122 females(55.0%). The mean age of patients was 35.3 years old. 2. Of the 222 patients, 142(64%) were "cured". 31(14%) showed "good", 21(9.5%) showed "fair", 28(12.6%) showed "poor" improvement. 3. According to clinical records, of the 64 patients with alopecia areata(AA), 48(75.0%) were cured. Of the 100 patients with alopecia areata multiplex(AAM), 68 patients (68.0%), 12(50.0%) out of 24 patients with ophiasis, 5(55.6%) out of 9 with alopecia semi-totalis(AST), 3(50.0%) out of 6 patients with alopecia totalis(AT), 6(31.6%) out of 19 patients with alopecia universalis(AU) were cured. 4. Patients with the wider hair loss extent and with more severe type of alopecia areata required longer treatment period to cure, and the cure rate was lowered(p<0.05). 5. The shorter duration of the disease was related to the higher cure rate(p<0.05). If the treatment was started after six months of the duration, the cure rate was lowered. Therefore, beginning treatment within six months of the onset is recommended. 6. The period until terminal hair showed was 1.5 months for AA, 1.7 months for AAM, 1.6 months for ophiasis, 1.9 months for AST, 2.3 months for AT, 3.2 months for AU. 7. The treatment period to cure was 4.9 months for AA, 7.3 months for AAM, 7.7 months for ophiasis, 6.8 months for AST, 7.7 months for AT, 16.3 months for AU. 8. The major prognostic factors were extent and type of alopecia, duration of the disease and relapse. Conclusions : We analyzed the effectiveness of Korean medical treatment through cure rate according to the prognostic factors. This study will provide useful data for the treatment of alopecia areata.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to report the effectiveness of a long-term Korean Medicine Treatment on 1035 atopic dermatitis patients Methods : Objective SCORAD Index(OSI) is used for measuring the degree of atopic dermatitis with photos of total 1035 atopic dermatitis patients who has visited oriental clinic from January 9, 2011 to October 31, 2013. Then, OSI was estimated according to gender, age, period of treatment and intensity. Results : 1. The ratio of male to female was 44.4 : 55.6. All patients were constituted with 26.5% of 0~11 year-old group, 15.7% of 12~18 year-old and 57.9% of 19 and more year-old. 2. The ratio of OSI improvement was significantly higher in women than in men after 3 month treatment, but there was no significant difference after 6, 9 and 12 months. 3. The OSI improvement of 0~11 year-old group was significantly higher than the other groups after 3 month treatment. But at the other periods of treatment, there was no significantly difference of the improvement among 3 different groups of age. 4. After 3, 6, 9 and 12 month treatment, the score of OSI was significantly lower than before treatment. After 12 month treatment, the score of OSI was lowest compared to the other periods of treatment. 5. The final OSI score of 87.7% patients was decreased compared to the initial. 6. All patients had been divided with 1.93% of the mild, 22.7% of the moderate and 75.4% of the severe by OSI intensity at initial visit. At final visit, the composition of patients was changed to 14.6% of the mild, 53.7% of the moderate and 31.7% of the severe. 7. The mild patients had got 42.56% of OSI improvement at the final. And the moderate had got 37.72% of OSI improvement at the final. 8. The severe patients had got 36.76% of OSI improvement at the final. And 89.2% of the severe had got decreased final OSI score compared to the initial. Conclusion : There was a definite decreasing of OSI score on the significant rate of Atopic dermatitis patients who had been treated by Korean medicine treatment at least for 3 months.
