  • Ensuring swift on-site access to fire engines is crucial in preserving the golden time and minimizing damage. However, various mobility constraints in alleyways hinder the timely entry of fire engines to the fire scene, significantly impairing their initial response capabilities. Therefore, this study analyzed the significant mobility constraints of fire engines, focusing on Seoul, which has many old town areas. By leveraging survey responses from firefighting experts and actual observations, this study quantitatively assessed the frequency and severity of mobility constraint factors affecting the disaster responses of fire engines. Survey results revealed a consistent set of top five factors regarding the frequency and disturbance level, including illegally parked cars, narrow paths, motorcycles, poles, and awnings/banners. A comparison with actual road-view images showed notable consistency between the survey and observational results regarding the appearance frequency of mobility constraint factors in vulnerable areas in Seoul. Furthermore, the study emphasized the importance of tailored management strategies for each mobility constraint factor, considering its characteristics, such as dynamic or static. The findings of this study can serve as foundational data for creating more detailed fire safety maps and advancing technologies that monitor the mobility of fire engines through efficient vision-based inference using CCTVs in the future.

  • In present, the terminal area of the Nagdong River Delta consists of micro-depositional landforms with sand barrier islands, sand bars and tidal flats which are arranged parallel to the present shoreline, and have rapidly shifted toward sea during last 100 years due to human activities such as construction of estuary dam, industrial complex and residential area. To clarify the landform changes of the area, the author traced the morphologic change pattern based on interpretation of air-photos, topographic maps and old Korean traditional map, and the results are as follows ; Based on the Daedongyeojido, one of the old Korean map, published in 1861, the area including upper part of the delta was underlying by sea level except two larger sand barriers, which means the Nagdong River Delta was not completely formed as the present outline of morphology by 1860s. According to the topographic map(1 :50,000) of 1916, the delta resembled to the present morphology pattern was exposed in 1916, and at this time the area was mainly composed of one sand barrier island, four sand bars and tidal flats, which had slowly elongated southwards before construction of the Nagdong River Estuary Dam in 1987. But after 1987, the area has been rapidly and drastically shifted southwards in arrange with one chain of sand barrier islands (Elsugdo -Myeonghodo-Sinhodo ) and four chains of sand bars (first chain ; Jinwoodo -Daemadeung-Maenggeummeorideung, second chain : Jangjado-Baeghabdeung, third chain ; Saedeung-Namusitdeung, fourth : Doyodeung-Dadaedeung) parallel to shoreline. This rapid landform change of the area is now occurring, and is seemed to ascribed firstly, to the construction of the Nagdong River Estuary Dam on Elsugdo in 1987, the Sinho Industrial Complex on Sinhodo and Myeongji Residential Area on Myeonghodo in 1992, secondly, to artificial alteration of drainage channel and consequential breakdown of former energy system between riverflow and tidal-and wave-energy. From these facts, it is inferred that the landform change pattern of the area will continue until a new equilibrium between the factor available to this energy system is accomplished.

  • PURPOSES : Most of the traffic surveys are carried out by an inspection method by the manpower. In some cases, the video equipment is used only in some regions when the traffic volume is surveyed. In this case, there is environmental restriction that the road equipment to fix the video equipment should exist. Also, in areas where information such as digital maps and satellite photographs is old or not provided, they are forced to rely on manpower research, but it is difficult to put huge amounts of time and money into the research in places where labor supply and demand is difficult. This difficulty is particularly pronounced in overseas business. METHODS : The purpose of this study is to improve the efficiency of business by using the drones in the traffic investigation through analysis of the cost reduction effect between the existing method and the proposed method in the overseas business traffic survey. The scope of the research is limited to the scope of research, and based on the case of overseas projects, the method of using drone for each research sector is suggested. RESULTS : In the traffic condition survey section, we propose the use of drone for traffic survey and queue length survey, and it is confirmed that there is a cost saving effect of 16% ~ 27% compared with the existing method. In the road condition survey, we propose the use of drones for road surface linear survey, geometry survey, and obstacle survey, and it was confirmed that the cost reduction effect is 39% ~ 93% compared to the existing method. CONCLUSIONS : In addition to overseas business, it is expected that it will have a positive effect on research time and cost reduction by using drone in traffic survey in domestic area where labor supply is not easy or basic data is insufficient.

  • Concern about nonpoint source pollution associated with urban storm water has led to the development of new tools for better water quality planning. This paper presents an application of a geographic information system (GIS) for urban water quality study. The GIS was used to manage land use data for nonpoint source pollution modeling and to aggregate pollutant loadings within various types of geographic units. An empirical water quality model was used to estimate pollutant loadings based primarily on land use. A land use coverage was created by updating an old coverage through interpretation of recent photography. This land use coverage was also used to record all pollutant loadings for each land use polygon. Storm sewer maps were digitized and interpreted to create a coverage of storm sewer basins and sub-basins. By overlaying pollutant loadings with the sewer sub-basin layer, aggregated pollutant loadings for major sewer outfalls were calculated. Based on the loading information, critical areas of excessive pollutant loadings were located and the effectiveness of Best Management Practices (BMPs) to control pollutant loadings were evaluated.

  • We investigated characteristics of channel morphology, flora and vegetation distribution at the main and the abandoned channels of the Hwangguji Stream and the Cheongmi Stream. The analysis of aerial photographs and old topographical maps showed that the abandoned channels were made by cut-off from the main channel due to the construction of artificial levee. The total number of species and percentage of exotic plants at the main channels were higher than those at the abandoned channels. At the abandoned channel, the percentage of species number of hydrophytes and hygrophytes was higher than those at the main channels in the both stream. The results of principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the floral structure between at the main and the abandoned channel was more similar in the Hwangguji Stream than that in the Cheongmi Stream. The relative distribution areas of hydrophytes and hygrophytes at two abandoned channels were much higher than those at the main channels in the both stream. The dominant plant was an emergent macrophyte, Zizania latifolia at two abandoned channels. Therefore, flora and vegetation at the abandoned channel showed more hydric and lentic characteristics and provided diversity on the landscape level.

  • We propose a novel blood biomarker detection method that uses miRNA super-resolution imaging to enable the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, we report a single-molecule detection method for visualizing disease-specific miRNA in tissue from an AD mice model, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from AD patients. Using optimized Magnified Analysis of Proteome (MAPs), we confirmed that five miRNAs contribute to neurodegenerative disease in the brain hippocampi of 5XFAD and wild-type mice. We also assessed PBMCs isolated from the whole blood of AD patients and a healthy control group, and subsequently analyzed those samples using miRNA super-resolution imaging. We detected more miR-200a-3p expression in the cornu ammonis 1 and dentate gyrus regions of 3 month-old 5XFAD mice than in wild-type mice. Additionally, miRNA super-resolution imaging of blood provides AD diagnosis platform for studying miRNA regulation inside cells at the single molecule level. Our results present a potential liquid biopsy method that could improve the diagnosis of early stage AD and other diseases.

  • Growing urban areas modify patterns of local land use and land cover. Land use changes associated with urban expansion. One way to understand and document land use change and urbanization is to establish benchmark maps compiled from satellite imagery. Old satellite Imagery is useful data to extract urban information. CORONA is a photo satellite reconnaissance program used from 1960 to 1972 and its imagery was declassified and has been available to the public since 1995. Since CORONA images are collected with panoramic cameras, several types of geometric distortions are involved. In this study we proposed mathematical modeling method which use modified collinearity equations. After the geometric modeling, we mosaicked images. We can successfully extract urban boundaries using GLCM method and visual interpretation in CORONA (1972) and SPOT (1995) imagery and detect urban changes in Seoul quantitatively.

  • Jang Sang-Hoon(장상훈) concluded that Dongyeo(東輿) seemed to be made between 1859 and 1866 but it was ahead of Cheonggudo(靑邱圖) in terms of the content and format. Accordingly he insisted that Cheonggudo was compiled based on the original version of Dongyeo which was supposed to be drawn between 1790 and 1834. This paper reappraised critically the previous researches and got several findings. Firstly, the changes of place names-4 places names were selected for the Jang Sang-Hoon's research and 2 were added in this paper-are reflected in the Yeodobiji(輿圖備志) and Dongyeo compiled by Choi Seonghwan(최성환) and Kim Jeongho(金正浩) between 1853 and 1856. Secondly, the sectioning format of Dongye shows some transitional character from the book style such as Cheonggudo to the folding style that was shown in Dongyeodo(東輿圖) and Daedongyeojido(大東輿地圖). Thirdly, the expression of the mountains in Dongyeo shares the same style which is shown in Dongyeodo and Daedongyejido. Fourth, Dongyeo contains the same information about old military bases and the castle locations in small local town centers that appear in Dongyeodo and Daedongyeojido but not in Cheonggudo and similar kinds of maps. In conclusion, Dongyeo and the original version of it are likely to be drawn by Kim Jeongho between 1853 and 1856 after Cheonggudo was made.

  • This study was carried out to provide information for establishing counter measures of soil pollution through analysis of Cd. Cu, Pb, and Zn in paddy soils and brown rice. Cadmium, Cu, Pb, and Zn contents in soils were analyzed and distribution maps for these heavy metals were prepared. Heavy metal contents in brown rice were also measured. Average contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in surface paddy soils extracted with 0.1 N HCl were 7.4, 35.8, 98.9, and $118.8mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. These were 9 times (Cu) to 50 times (Cd) higher than the background level of heavy metals in unpolluted paddy soils in Korea. The contents of Pb and Zn were lower than those measured in 1980, whereas Cd content did not decrease. The levels of heavy metal contamination in paddy soils may not affect growth or yield of rice plant, however, Cd contents indicated a level of serious concern to humans. The average contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in brown rice were 0.38, 2.38, 1.31 and $22.31mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively.

  • The development of group-specific tissue probability maps (TPM) provides a priori knowledge for better result of cerebral tissue classification with regard to the inter-ethnic differences of inter-subject variability. We present sequential procedures of group-specific TPM and evaluate the age effects in the structural differences of TPM. We investigated 100 healthy volunteers with high resolution MRI scalming. The subjects were classified into young (60, 25.92+4.58) and old groups (40, 58.83${\pm}$8.10) according to the age. To avoid any bias from random selected single subject and improve registration robustness, average atlas as target for TPM was constructed from skull-stripped whole data using linear and nonlinear registration of AIR. Each subject was segmented into binary images of gray matter, white matter, and cerebrospinal fluid using fuzzy clustering and normalized into the space of average atlas. The probability images were the means of these binary images, and contained values in the range of zero to one. A TPM of a given tissue is a spatial probability distribution representing a certain subject population. In the spatial distribution of tissue probability according to the threshold of probability, the old group exhibited enlarged ventricles and overall GM atrophy as age-specific changes, compared to the young group. Our results are generally consistent with the few published studies on age differences in the brain morphology. The more similar the morphology of the subject is to the average of the population represented by the TPM, the better the entire classification procedure should work. Therefore, we suggest that group-specific TPM should be used as a priori information for the cerebral tissue classification.
