Popular culture has symbolic meaning and has been constructed through different mass media. Newspapers played a significant role in 1950s and 1960s public culture. In particular, editorial cartoons in newspapers expressed social aspects of the age implicitly through satire and criticism. This study examines delivered culture by reflecting the past social aspects and inquiring on clothing featured in the editorial cartoon "Gobau". As for a research method, literature research was conducted on clothing of the age with a review of "Gobau". As for a research range, examination was done based on the complete works of Gobau composed of 5 volumes published as a first edition by Hankookmunhwasa on November, 1973. Early "Gobau" cartoons from 1951-1963 were published in 5 volumes; therefore, research was conducted for the era from 1950s to the early 1960s. Clothing expressed in "Gobau" were reviewed, classified into formative characteristics and internal meaning. Internal meaning was examined by dividing into the expression of social aspects and criticism of society. The research findings are as follows. First, clothing in "Gobau" reflected characteristic in direct manner. There was a coexistence of Hanbok and western-styled, clear distinction between men's trousers and women's skirt. Besides, various kinds of women's western-styled dress appeared in the 1960s. Second, they showed the dress culture that reflected past social aspects. Many aspects were included to reconstruct old and worn clothes due to scarce resources after the Korean War, and cherishing clothes, buying fabric directly to making clothes, making clothes from dressmaking shop, and restrictions on imported goods and luxury items. Third, the study also examined the social norms for fashion. It contained negative perspectives on women wearing pants, short skirts, and new hair styles (like perms) from western culture as well as lipstick.

Purpose: This study explored the meaning of the social perceptions of nurses in online news articles during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: A total of 339 nurse-related articles published in Korean online newspapers from January 1 to December 31, 2020, were extracted by entering various combinations of OR and AND with the four words "Corona," "COVID," "Nursing," and "Nurse" as search keywords using BIGKinds, a news database provided by the Korea Press Foundation. The collected data were analyzed with a keyword network analysis and topic modeling using NetMiner 4. Results: The top keywords extracted from the nurse-related news articles were, in the following order, "metropolitan area," "protective clothing," "government," "task," and "admission." Four topics representing keywords were identified: "encouragement for dedicated nurses," "poor work environment," "front-line nurses working with obligation during the COVID-19 pandemic," and "nurses' efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19." Conclusion: The media's attention to the dedication of nurses, the shortage of nursing resources, and the need for government support is encouraging in that it forms the public opinion necessary to lead to substantial improvements in treating nurses. The nursing community should actively promote policy proposals to improve treatment toward nurses by utilizing the net function of the media and proactively seek and apply strategies to improve the image of nurses working in various fields.

Four statistics books, one translated by statisticians and three by non-statisticians, are reviewed. They are reviewed in terms of indices and bibliographies, statistical theory and terms, and the history of statistics. In addition, book review articles appeared in daily newspapers are considered. Unfortunately, we can find many(some of them trivial, and some others serious) problems in the translations. Many problems could have been got around if the books had been translated by statisticians. So, conclusion suggested in this article is very simple: Translation of statistics books, especially books for the laymen, is a job that Korean statisticians should not shift to others. The past, present, and future of online journalism in Korea are inextricably bound up with the portal site news services. In traditional journalism, finite news media took hold on news consumption completely because of performing news production and distribution simultaneously. Since then, in the age of multi-media and multi-channel, the audience selection has become more important because of greatly increasing news media and then exploding news production. In online journalism, the news distribution have emerged as the most important field because of the intensive consuming the portal site news services making use of various news easier, the characteristic of news consumption focusing on not news media brands but news media contents, etc. Therefore, the news present landscape of Korean journalism oriented news distribution has been completed by that the portal site news services became the symbol of online journalism. That the portal site news services performing only news distribution have more influence than the paper based online newspapers and Internet based online newspapers producing news means the change of media power. By this, a conflict between news media and portal site news services appears at all times.

Purpose: As comprehensive nursing care service has gradually expanded, it has become necessary to explore the various opinions about it. The purpose of this study is to explore the large amount of text data regarding comprehensive nursing care service extracted from online news and social media by applying a semantic network analysis. Methods: The web pages of the Korean Nurses Association (KNA) News, major daily newspapers, and Twitter were crawled by searching the keyword 'comprehensive nursing care service' using Python. A morphological analysis was performed using KoNLPy. Nodes on a 'comprehensive nursing care service' cluster were selected, and frequency, edge weight, and degree centrality were calculated and visualized with Gephi for the semantic network. Results: A total of 536 news pages and 464 tweets were analyzed. In the KNA News and major daily newspapers, 'nursing workforce' and 'nursing service' were highly rated in frequency, edge weight, and degree centrality. On Twitter, the most frequent nodes were 'National Health Insurance Service' and 'comprehensive nursing care service hospital.' The nodes with the highest edge weight were 'national health insurance,' 'wards without caregiver presence,' and 'caregiving costs.' 'National Health Insurance Service' was highest in degree centrality. Conclusion: This study provides an example of how to use atypical big data for a nursing issue through semantic network analysis to explore diverse perspectives surrounding the nursing community through various media sources. Applying semantic network analysis to online big data to gather information regarding various nursing issues would help to explore opinions for formulating and implementing nursing policies.

This study analyzed newspaper reports in the United States and South Korea that focused on Parasite's unprecedented performance at the 2020 Academy Awards. The research focused on the power relationship between 'the established and the outsiders (Elias & Scotson, 1994)' as represented by the Academy Awards and Parasite, respectively. Qualitative content analysis and text analysis were conducted to examine the reporting of American and South Korean newspapers and illuminate three aspects of the power relations between the Academy Awards and Parasite. Three major findings were derived. First, the Academy traditionally has a reputation for marginalizing films with a non-English or Asian background, but recognition of Parasite at the 92nd ceremony changed the Academy's established position of power. Second, historically, the Academy Awards had been characterized by a group charisma that exerts stigmatization (through an English-oriented policy and language stigmatization) and accords North American films priority over non-English movies. Lastly, the reports of newspapers in the two countries are generally similar, but the Korean articles internalized the individual, society, and the state.

This study attempted to demonstrate the interaction effects between attitudinal frames of nine daily newspapers and community structure in the 1994s Michigan gubernatorial election. It was theoretically guided by framing research and the self-presentation theory of social-cognition perspective and empirically tested with archival data. For the purpose of this study, content analysis of nine statewide daily newspapers was employed in order to provide data on news framing. Data on voting rates for John Engler, winner of the 1994 Michigan Gubernatorial election, in each county of Michigan were used for vote choice while Michigan census data were used for constructing an Index of community structural differentiation. The results indicated that majority compliance frames were slightly more related with vote choice in homogeneous com-unities rather than were majority compliance frames in heterogeneous communities while social identification frames tended to have an influence on vote choice in heterogeneous communities more than did social identification frames in homogeneous communities.

Since 1995 local newspapers competitively commenced the service of multimedia electronic newspaper on Internet WWW due to the technical development in data processing and the widely used Internet. It includes image, phonetics and moving pictures as well as texts. The Internet service of newspaper articles are not only the information source which enables the users utilize the various information easily and rapidly but also to be an important reference service tools in the library. Howeverjn many cases. the current local electronic newspaper service aims at the service itself. Therefore, the information does not contain plenty of information. In some cases, information searching system focused on the users are not established yet. In this research, structuring process and characteristics of the Internet WWW electronic newspaper and the current service status and contents of the local newspaper have been reviewed. Construction of menu, information searching system and reference mannual for users of 6 local newspapers have been analyzed to secure efficient service for users.

This research analyzed domestic newspapers' agenda setting trend and meaning construction process on the issue of marine environment by year. The research conducted a language network analysis and used R program and Netminer program to analyze four major daily newspapers' news coverages (Dong-A, Joongang, Hanhyoreh, and Kyunghyang) for the last ten years (2005-2014). The results show that the issue of marine environment in Korean media reports are signified in the economic context. For the last ten years, news reports are mainly focused on the 'development' issue of marine environment, without distinction of year. The core key words of the networks are "development", "plan", and "project." However, diverse strategies for 'preservation' are not covered in media reports as a major issue. The importance of effective preservation and reasonable development should be considered in a balanced way. Korean media coverages mainly concentrate on the development issue, and it has a strong influence on considering the marine environment area as an object of development. Future direction and implication of the press reports related to marine environment are discussed.

The purpose of this study is to analyze types and features social issues about the Gyeongju earthquakes 2016, South Korea. The specific purpose is to identify types of topics related to Gyeongju Earthquakes, changes of topics over time, and the differences of topics depending on the each type of newspapers. According to the result of topic modeling, 55 topics were extracted. The result of this study is following these. First, the main topics have been changed with the course of time. In September, various topics were emerged, specifically urgent issues was found during two weeks after the first earthquake. After October, topics about social problems derived from the earthquakes received much attention at that time. Topics related to safety problems about nuclear plant have steadily found in all period. Second, topics varied depending whether the newspaper is national or regional. Also, differences of topics were found when dividing the newspapers by their characteristics considered conservative or liberal.
