The purpose of this study was to evaluate credibility of articles in newspapers and medical counseling on websites about renal diseases. Methods: Kidney information was searched in 6 newspapers for the past 10 years, and 4 portal websites and 17 internet health counseling sites for the past 5 years. We classified them according to information providers and evaluated credibility by giving points 3, 2, 1 to correct, mostly correct but ambiguous, and incorrect contents, respectively. We compared the credibility of the groups with each other. Results: Sixty four articles from newspapers, and 789 and 506 medical counselings from portal websites and internet health counseling sites were selected, respectively. The kidney information providers in newspapers were medical journalists(doctors)(31.2%), kidney specialists(doctors)(23.4%) and so on. The consultants in the portal sites were doctors(49.1%)and anonymous reporters (49.9%). In internet health counseling sites, 91% of the consultants were doctors. All articles in the newspapers were credible. Doctors' answers were more credible than nonphysicians'(P=0.005) and anonymous contributors(P<0.001) in portal sites. In health counseling sites, doctors answered more reliably than nonphysicians. Conclusion: The kidney information in newspapers was credible. It is important for questioners to confirm the type of consultants in websites. We suggest that doctors, especially kidney specialists need to increase their roles in offering information to mass media.

  • Objectives: This study investigates whether Korean news media pay more attention to emerging diseases than chronic ones, and whether they closely follow the changes in the magnitude of health risks of chronic or well-known diseases. These two features are expected to appear as the result of surveillance function served by health journalism that should be the main source of the public's risk perception. Methods: The number of stories published in 10 newspapers containing the words, 'SARS,' 'Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy,' 'Avian Influenza,' and 'Influenza A virus' was compared with the number of stories on chronic or wellknown diseases. We also counted the annual number of stories, published in a 12-year period, containing following terms: 'cancer,' 'diabetes,' 'hypertension,' 'pneumonia,' and 'tuberculosis.' The number was compared with the actual mortality of each disease. Results: Although cancer represented the primary cause of mortality, the newspapers covered key emerging diseases more than cancer or other well-known diseases. Also, media coverage of 'pneumonia' and 'tuberculosis' did not vary in accordance with changes in the mortality of each disease. However, the news media coverage did vary in accordance with the mortality of 'cancer,' 'diabetes,' and 'hypertension.' Conclusions: Korean health journalism was found to have both strong and weak points. The news media reduced the relative level of attention given to pneumonia and tuberculosis. Bearing in mind the major influence of news coverage on risk perception, health professionals need to be more proactive about helping to improve Korean health journalism.

  • In the 1950s, Korea was forced to rely on foreign aid, relief supplies, and contraband because of the Korean War. At the same time, Western culture also flowed into the country rapidly, which is believed to have had a great impact on the Korean clothing culture of the time. It is thought that this trend could be found in magazines and newspapers of the time. In the 1950s, newspapers served as the main channel for information acquisition and dissemination. I would like to analyze this tendency focusing on a newspaper article in the Dong-A Ilbo in the 1950s. According to the article, the hanbok was viewed as an old custom that needed to be improved or old clothes that had to be changed to Western clothes. As a result, the doubles system of both hanbok and Western clothes collapsed, and hanbok changed to an evening or ceremonial dress. From the 1960s, Korean fashion quickly changed to a more western style.

  • Tiffany & Co. had been recognized so highly in Korea even before its official advance to the country in 1991 that a successful jewelry company was called 'Korean Tiffany'. The purpose of this study was to explain how American brand Tiffany had been spread and recognized among Korean people by analyzing related articles and advertisements during the period from the Liberation to the 1989. The research method used in this study was the articles of newspapers and relevant literature. This is the result that, with the run of movie 'Breakfast at Tiffany's in Korea in 1962, the trade name and trademark of Tiffany were used illegally not only by jewelry traders but also by other businesses. Other luxury jewelry brands in the same period could not enjoy indirect advertising and spillover effects as good as Tiffany. As a result, a successful jewelry company was called 'Korean Tiffany' in 1989, and the expression is still valid in the country.

  • During the IMF period the unsold of apartment housing was significantly increased due to financial problems. Apartment constructors had to severely struggle with fund problems and even some of them were bankrupted. Due to this fact, they had to find new marketing strategies to sell the apartment complexes even with low margins. One of the solutions was that housing companies could present a distinctive and outstanding outdoor space in apartment complexes. The purpose of this study was to investigate such differentiated marketing strategies by reviewing the apartment housing advertisements during the IMF period. The major findings through this study were as follows: 1. During the IMF period housing companies presented a distinctive and outstanding outdoor space in apartment complexes. In 1999, which was the peak of the IMF impact, there were frequent advertisements for apartment housing in daily newspapers. 2. Daily newspapers had been mostly used for advertising the apartments. A thorough review of them is very valuable in investigating differentiated marketing strategies of the outdoor space in apartment complexes. 3. The main theme of differentiation of outdoor space can be summarized as : Emphasis of the importance of healthy life, application of environment-friendly facilities, and use of traditional korean style elements in apartment complexes.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze how Chinese people perceive the acceptance and spread of Korean popular culture through the analysis of the Korean Wave news frame in Chinese daily newspapers. The result of analysis showed that there was a significant difference in the number of an article appearance in all three daily newspapers by year according to a specific issue including the popularity of Korean Wave-related events, Korean dramas, movies and Korean stars. This reporting trend also appeared in the article format, and all three daily newspapers mainly used an episodic frame to deliver fragmentary Korean Wave trend or personal information emotionally rather than a thematic frame to analyze and interpret the Korean Wave trend in depth. As a result of analyzing dominant news frames using the inductive approach to examine specific contents of the articles, news frames that composed the Korean Wave into the cultural interest frame as 'Interest and attention toward Korean popular culture' and gave positive evaluations were dominant, followed by the economic news frames that explained the Korean Wave from the economic perspective and the political news frames that considered the Korean Wave from the viewpoint of the Chinese Government. These news frames appeared somewhat different according to the publishing purpose of daily newspapers. ${\ll}$People's Daily${\gg}$ which is the official organ of the Chinese Communist Party often covered the political frames to report the policies of Chinese government, ${\ll}$People's Daily (Overseas edition)${\gg}$ often covered economic frames from the overseas perspective and the Jinghua Daily which is a commercial newspaper by nature often handled cultural interest frames to consider Korean Wave as new cultural phenomenon.
