The Concept of Reproduction and the Criteria of an Exhibition in Contemporary Arts (현대미술에 있어서 '복제'의 개념과 전시규범의 문제 -${\gg}$살바도르 달리 탄생 100주년 특별전${\gg}$의 전시물 <성경> 연작을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this article is to delve into the problems of originality of the artwork by examining issues of reproduction within the contemporary art market. In contemporary arts, especially in terms of art production and consumption, we can't overlook society and its economic structure and its connection with of capitalism. As the purity of art creation has turned into an exchange value, art, especially an object as artwork, has fallen into the status of production in an economic marketing system. Walter Benjamin mainly referred to that point in his thesis Das Kunstwerk im Zeitalter seiner technischen Reproduzierbarkeit, which originated the sociology of plastic arts. This thesis, published in 1936, traced how the artistic functions of photograph and movie had been changed through the social development. His main concerns were movie and photograph but what I am concentrating from his point of view, is that even in the field of plastic arts, the manufacture of reproduction has been practiced as a primary method within the social and political contexts and development. Though I am referring to this in the main body of this article, reproduction in contemporary art strongly needs a new definition since it has been spread all over like a newest virus, not only by collector's personal taste or hut also by commercial circulations of these reproductions to the public. This relates to Benjamin's argument about the value of an exhibition at a museum(Ausstellungswert). Since the function of an artwork has been one of cultural industry, the manufacturing of reproduction raises unexpected problems, such as, the originality of the artwork, the value of an exhibition at a museum, its achievement as documentary and as a territory of art criticism. In this point of view, I want to inquire into the value and criteria of an exhibition in contemporary art through the review of the definitions and the intrinsic attributes of reproduction. Somehow in a broad sense, the reproduction is a product coming out of representation or copy (replica) of an original art work or an model. Therefore, the problems it presents differ from the Simulacre, which is an image without an original one. In terms of the Meanings of reproduction, we can distinguish it as reproductions, copies, and productions. These types of reproductions are not the original artworks reflected by the creative intention of the artists. For example, a publishing company reproduced some of lithographs of Salvador Dali in the 1960s. They are commercial copies in the form of representation or reproduction with no artistic and creative intention of the artist. However, In despite of this theoretical basis, reproductions of the famous artists are still displayed without any verification for of the public's quest for the artworks. Moreover, many commercial companies that are planning to exhibit art works of the world-famous artists only for their profits keep trying to speak ill of and judging by the law the honest art critics' articles which discuss the true values of exhibition. If freedom of expression is one of the ideals of democracy, even the judgment of the originality of the artworks should be freely expressed.

A Diachronic Analysis of Characters in Movie Versions of Cinderella (영화화된 <신데렐라> 캐릭터들의 통시적 비교분석)

  • Since it is imperative to share the values with the spectators to convince the public of the era, the main characters of a story that underwent numerous adaptation through time would change gradually. This paper examined changes of the main characters in various versions of Cinderella. Until the mid-20th century, Cinderella would be portrayed as a meek, passive and obedient girl as in the original fairy tale version of Perrault. As moving to 70s, a heroine who acts with her own feelings and thoughts began to appear. In the 90s, spectators could meet a protagonist who fought fiercely to be the owner of her own fate, and in the recent Disney movie, Cinderella stood up for herself while accepting herself as she was. The prince character also underwent similar transition. In the early versions of Cinderella, the prince would be a vague figure with a title who was desired by all maids in the country. It is in the 70s that the prince began to be portrayed as a person who has his own problems. In the recent years, the spectators could see the process that the prince transformed from a naive aristocrat to a man with responsibilities. In modern society, women have more social opportunities compared to the past, and women's social statuses do not need to be secured by relationship with men any longer. Thus Cinderella story is not as popular nowadays, moreover somebody whose dream is becoming Cinderella would subject to social reproach. However, beside the gender, the story could be the only hope for people who feel a sense of helplessness that there is no chance in their lives. As result variations of Cinderella story will go on as long as people of social deprivation exist.

Differential Effects of 2D and 3D motion pictures on physical fatigue, recognition and arousal -Focused on viewing order and viewer's gender difference- (2D와 3D 영상 시청이 신체피로도, 재인기억 및 각성수준에 미치는 차별적 효과 -시청순서와 성차를 중심으로-)

  • This study aimed to investigate the effects of dimensions of movie clip (2D vs. 3D), viewing orders (2D ${\to}$ 3D vs. 3D ${\to}$ 2D), and gender difference on participants' subjective fatigue, recognition for the elements in the clips, and arousal level. The results can be summarized as followings. First, subjective fatigue level was higher in the 3D condition than 2D condition, but this tendency was more clear in the 2D ${\to}$ 3D condition than in the 3D ${\to}$ 2D condition. Second, correct recognition rates were significantly higher for 3D than 2D only in the 3D ${\to}$ 2D condition. In particular, male participants showed higher correct recognition rates than female participants in the 3D clip condition, whereas female participants showed higher correct recognition rates than male participants in the 2D clip condition. Third, although 3D clips tended to induce higher level of arousal, this tendency was showed only in the 2D ${\to}$ 3D condition, which implied previous exposure to 2D clip increased the arousal level in following 3D clip than vice versa.

A Rating Inference of Movie Reviews Using Sentiment Patterns (감성 패턴을 이용한 영화평 평점 추론)

  • We propose the sentiment pattern as a novel sentiment feature for more accurate text sentiment analysis, and introduce the rating inference of movie reviews using it. The text sentiment analysis is a task that recognizes and classifies sentiment of text whether it is positive or negative. For that purpose, the sentiment feature is used, which includes sentiment words and phrase pattern that have specific sentiment like positive or negative. The previous researches for the sentiment analysis, however, have a limit to understand accurately total sentiment of either a sentence or text because they consider the sentiment of sentiment words and phrase patterns independently. Therefore, we propose the sentiment pattern that is defined by arranging semantically all sentiment in a sentence, and use them as a new sentiment feature for the rating inference that is one of the detail subjects of the sentiment analysis. In order to verify the effect of proposed sentiment pattern, we conducted experiments of rating inference. Ratings of test reviews is inferred by using a probabilistic method with sentiment features including sentiment patterns extracted from training reviews. As a result, it is shown that the result of rating inference with sentiment patterns are more accurate than that without sentiment patterns.

Default Voting using User Coefficient of Variance in Collaborative Filtering System (협력적 여과 시스템에서 사용자 변동 계수를 이용한 기본 평가간 예측)

  • In collaborative filtering systems most users do not rate preferences; so User-Item matrix shows great sparsity because it has missing values for items not rated by users. Generally, the systems predict the preferences of an active user based on the preferences of a group of users. However, default voting methods predict all missing values for all users in User-Item matrix. One of the most common methods predicting default voting values tried two different approaches using the average rating for a user or using the average rating for an item. However, there is a problem that they did not consider the characteristics of items, users, and the distribution of data set. We replace the missing values in the User-Item matrix by the default noting method using user coefficient of variance. We select the threshold of user coefficient of variance by using equations automatically and determine when to shift between the user averages and item averages according to the threshold. However, there are not always regular relations between the averages and the thresholds of user coefficient of variances in datasets. It is caused that the distribution information of user coefficient of variances in datasets affects the threshold of user coefficient of variance as well as their average. We decide the threshold of user coefficient of valiance by combining them. We evaluate our method on MovieLens dataset of user ratings for movies and show that it outperforms previously default voting methods.

  • Korean movies with a great variety of styles have recently succeeded in drawing people's attention Rule number one is "the more entertainment, the more audiences". On the top of box offices are always the movies that have a number of spectacular scenes, pounding sounds and big budget characters. Hong Sang Su movies, however, receive attention from the public without above noted descriptions. One of his effective methods of expression is "realism" He has illustrated the trivial episodes with his own wits and ways. Not only has his style become famous and popular but he has many followers. He enjoys using ordinary emotion and sentiment that are likely to happen to everyone. This paper uses two tools. One is the traditional analysis of realism. The other is how he can approach the public meaningfully by listing common elements he frequently uses in his movies. Nevertheless, we can't fully understand his realism by explaining how he shows our everyday life and how much his movie looks like it. Though admitting there are so many preceding papers on his works but this paper will try to look deep into his realism through the analysis of Mise-en-Sc$\grave{e}$ne.

  • Attached parking lots installation criteria is determined by use, total floor area, etc. according to the Parking Lot Act and local government ordinances. However, with traffic demand increase inconvenience about use of culture and assembly facilities have been raised. When planning number of parking lots for cultural and assembly facilities, legal parking lots and unit parking lots are used, but this causes inconvenience and traffic problems on the surrounding roads, because reality and convenience are not considered. Therefore, this study intend to present an realistic number of parking lots calculating equation for movie theater in Gwangju Metropolitan City. After investigating number of parking lots, number of screens, number of seats, total floor area, bus route and illegal parking for a cultural facility in Gwangju Metropolitan City, prediction model for calculating number of parking lots was presented using SPSS regression analysis. As a result of comparing prediction model and unit method, the prediction model was be closer actual cumulative parking space, so prediction model verification was completed. Based on the model verified in this study, Realistic number of parking lots will be installed. However, due to limitations of research on specific areas, research on various facilities should continue in consideration of regional, population, and urban characteristics

An Exploratory Study on the Critics's Reviews Reported in the Press : Focusing on the Relationship Between Opinion Quality of Film Reviews and Box Office Performance (언론에 보도된 전문가 영화 리뷰에 관한 연구 : 영화 리뷰의 품질과 흥행성과의 관계를 중심으로)

  • This study tried to explore the contents of film critics' reviews reported in the press. Based on fifty nine Korean movies with over 100,000 audience in 2017, this study collected 1113 reviews from fifty five movies with the exception of four without reviews. This study focused on the correlation between film's overall quality and four evaluation items such as directing, acting, story, and the visual. Examining the difference in the report timing of the review, the length of the review, and the intensity of the opinion, this study also analyzed the relationship between the internal aspects of reviews and box office performance. According to the results, the valence of critics' reviews was generally positive. Looking at the difference of reporting time, this valence was higher in the week before release than in the release week of film. The evaluation items of reviews were highly covered both before movie release and in the opening week. These were significantly declined in the second week of release. In the relationship between the number of reviews by each movie and box office performance, a positive correlation was found.

  • Director Lee Chang Dong said that it is the most important point for revealing the invisible beauty so that the audience could feel the unseen beauty through the . Discussing about how to find beauty that is not only visible but also invisible through the main character Mi-ja from the film, who makes a decision and reactions on her daily life by her perception that are difficult for others to take same. The film tells that how Mi-ja's ideal of a beauty can be taken the role for writing a poetry at the moment of the dead poet society, making a movie in the age of dying emotion and also when it lost fundamental values and about movie media. This study analyzed the performances of the main character Mi-ja in the film, and actress Yoon Jung Hee based on Director Lee Chang Dong's directed performance. The audience will be self-questioning and reflecting their life through the Mi-ja's an unidentifiable characteristic which something that someone cannot say, something that someone cannot express, something that tells something through Mi-ja's poem and actress herself finds the character's feelings.

Predicting Arab Consumers' Preferences on the Korean Contents Distribution

  • Purpose - This study aims to examine the analysis of pattern on Arab countries consumers' preferences of the Korean Contents using social media, Facebook since Korean entertainment contents have been distributed in the global marketplace. Then we focus on developing Predictive model using a Data Mining Technique. Research design, data and methodology - In order to understand preference growth of Korean contents in Arabic countries, we- collected data from two popular Facebook pages: 'Korean movies and drama' and 'K-pop'. Then, we adopted a data-driven approach based on Data Mining techniques. Results - It is obvious that the number of likes for K-pop will increase for all North African and Middle Eastern countries, however concerning Korean Movies and Drama except Tunisia it is decreasing for Algeria, Egypt and Morocco. Also, concerning Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates, the number of likes will decrease for Korean Movies and Drama which is not the case for Iraq. Conclusions - It is noted in this study that K-contents such as drama, movie and music are sometimes a gateway to a wider interest in Korean culture, food and brands. Moreover, this study gives significant implications for developing predictive model to forecast Korean contents' consumption and preferences.
