  • In this work, a composite formed by adding loess with lanthanium ("La-Loess") was proposed for effective removal of phosphate found in confined water bodies such as lake and reservoir. It was found that the theoretical maximum amount of lanthanum that can be attached to Loess was 2.68 mg La/g Loess. The phosphate removal was enhanced as an added amount of La-Loess composite increased. Furthermore, there was a noticeable difference in phosphate removal between Loess and La-Loess as the latter required 1.5 to 10 times less Loess than the former. Both Isotherm equations of Freundlich and Langmuir can be used to explain the phosphate adsorption characteristics in using La-Loess composites. The phosphate removal was very effective in the pH range of 5~8, which means that the proposed adsorbent can be directly applied to natural water without adjusting pH. Also, the La-Loess composites were well settled within 30 min without causing turbidity in water. Consequently, the proposed La-Loess can be strongly recommended for phosphate removal in confined water bodies.

  • In this study, the mechanical properties related to the fabric appearance of well being functional bamboo knitted fabric before and after loess dyeing were evaluated. The mechanical properties of fabrics were measured by KES-F system, that is, shape retention, draping, wrinkle recovery, compression property, and surface properties, and total hand value of three types of knitted fabric, 100% bamboo, 100% cotton, and bamboo / cotton blend (60 / 40) were evaluated before and after loess dyeing. As a result, it was found that appearance density, shape retention, and drape coefficient of cotton knitted fabric were greater than those of bamboo knitted fabric. After loess dyeing, shape retention and drape coefficient, wrinkle recovery of bamboo knitted fabric improved and WC/C and MMD/SMD decreased. According to THV, the hand of bamboo/cotton blend knit is the best among three samples by compensation the weak properties of the two fiber. Therefore, loess dyeing seemed to be a good method for improving shape retention and hand value of 100% bamboo and bamboo blended fabric.

  • Cullet-loess tile bodies are successfully fabricated using cullet, loess, hollow microspheres, and sintering additives (borosilicate glass frit, boric acid, or fumed silica) as starting materials. The effects of the additive composition and sintering temperature on the sintered density and flexural strength of the cullet-loess tile bodies are investigated. The sintered density of the cullet-loess tile bodies increases with an increase in the sintering temperature as a result of the enhanced densification of pore walls through the viscous flow of a liquid phase formed from the glass frit and sintering additives. The flexural strength of the cullet-loess tile bodies increases with increases in the sintering temperature and the cullet content in the starting composition. A maximal flexural strength of 40 MPa is obtained in cullet-loess tile bodies sintered with glass frit at $800^{\circ}C$ in air.

  • This study was performed to define the effects of various levels (0∼15%) of dietary yellow loess on serum constituents in Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli). After seven weeks of feeding trial, hemoglobin, protein, albumin, triglyceride, cholesterol and bilirubin in serum were investigated. Chemical composition of yellow loess were composed of SiO2 49.80%, Al2O3 27.50%, FeO3 8.33%, CaO 0.09%, MgO 0.64%, K2O 1.62%, Na2O 0.12%, P2O5 0.20% and MnO 0.03%. Serum levels of total protein and albumin showed higher values the yellow loess addition groups than the control group, and the values of protein and albumin were increased with dietary yellow loess level. Serum levels of triglyceride and cholesterol in the groups fed yellow loess were lower than those in the group fed control diet. And these values decreased with dietary yellow loess level up 10%, then increased with 15% yellow loess diet. The values of bilirubin in serum significantly decreased with dietary yellow loess level up 10%, then increased with 15% yellow loess diet. Hemoglobin level from rockfish fed 7.5% and 10% yellow loess diet were significantly higher than those from fed the control diet.

  • This study was conducted to examined the effect of dietary supplementation of yellow loess on the growth performance and blood component profiles in pigs. A total of one hundred fifty three pigs (60 one weeks old piglets and 93 adult pigs). Piglets were randomly divided into 3 groups which were control, control + 0.5% yellow loess, control + 1% yellow loess. We measured body weight and weight gain among treatment group. Indeed, we obtained hematological data with WBC, RBC, Hb, Hct, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, and PLT in all loess supplemented group compared to the control. Adults were divided into 2 group (control and control + 1% yellow loess) and serum albumin levels in 1% yellow loess supplemented group was significantly higher than the control group (p<0.01). Amount of crude fat in feces was significantly reduced in yellow loess supplemented group (p<0.001), but no differences were observed at crude protein and crude ash in both groups. In carcass weight and back fat thickness, no significant differences were observed between control and yellow loess supplemented groups. The carcass grade was improved by the dietary supplementation of yellow loess compared to the pig fed control. As a results, dietary yellow loess improves nutrient absorption and carcass grade.

  • This study aims to investigate the formation and sedimentary environment including formative period, grain composition and climate change from loess-paleosol sequence deposited on a gravel bed of river terrace in the Jincheon Basin, Chungbuk Province. The Jincheon section consists downward of a surface layer, loess-paleosol sequence, transitional layer I, transitional layer II and gravel bed. It can be suggested from the OSL age dating that the sequence was deposited during MIS 6 to 4. The sequence can be divided into four horizons based on the variation in the magnetic susceptibility values. Grain size analysis reveals that the sequence indicates similar properties of grain size to loess deposits in Korea and especially, the Y values in the sequence are lower than those in the loess and paleosol horizons in the Chinese Loess Plateau and similar to those in the Red Clay in the Chinese Loess Plateau and Xiashu loess in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. These Y values in the sequence can be attributed to the remote source and/or experience of intensive weathering process after deposition in the Korean Peninsula.

  • Climatic change of the late-Quaternary period has been record-ed in the loess deposits of the central Great plains and the record of such change is extractable using a number of approaches and parameters. The stratigraphy of loess deposits which have been investigated on Fort Riley exhibits the same sequence of loess units and intercalated buried soils as is found elsewhere in the re-gion but adds detail unique to the reservation Upland late-Qua-ternary composite stratigraphy preserved on the reservation con-sists of the basal Sangamon soil of the Last interglacial(c. 120-110ka), Gilman Canyon Formation(c. >40 -20ka), Peoria loess(c. 20 -10ka) Brady soil(c. 11 -10ka) Bignell loess(c. 9-\ulcornerka). and mod-ern surface soil. Application of magnetic analyses has provided proxy data sets that represent a time series of climatically regulated pedogenesis/weathering and botanical composition. magetic data have yielded an impression of the variation in climate from Sangamon time to the late Holocene through a reconstruction of the history of pedogenesis/weathering. Sangamon soil formation dominated the reservation durin the Last interglacial as indicated by magnetic parameters. During Gil-man Canyon time loess influx was usually sufficiently slow as to permit pedogenesis which appears to have been at a maximum twice during that time. Warm season grasses were important dur-ing soil formation but diminished in importance during the peri-ods of more rapid loess fall which were cooler and perhaps wet-ter. Peoria loess fall a function of the deterioration of climate during the last Glacial Maximum thinly blanketed the reservation with thickest accumulations occurring to the north-west(Bala Cemetery site)proximal to the source region. Long-term surface stability did not apparently occur within Peoria time but short-term stability may be indicaed by the presence of thin weathering zones(incipient soils) in the Peoria loess. Re-gional landscape stability prevailed during the environmental shift at the Pleistocene/Holocene transition resulting in forma-tion of the well expressed Brady soil. One or more weak soils developed in the Bignell loess as it ac-cumulated. A notable feature of the Bignell loess is the appear-ance of the Altithermal dry period: the loess experienced little weathering and was dominated by warm season grasses until the latter of the Holocene.

  • The physical and chemical characteristics of loess-paleosol sequence in Jeongjang-ri, Geochang basin are examined using the magnetic susceptibility measurement, grain size analysis, OSL age dating, major, rare earth and trace elements analysis. The grain size characteristics of the loess-palesol sequence are obviously different from those of river sediment forming river terrace deposits and the Chinese Loess Plateau. The loess-paleosol sequence consisting of L1, L1LL1, L1S1, L1L2, S1 and L2 from top to bottom is estimated to MIS 2~MIS 6 and the river terrace to MIS 7. The compositions of major, rare earth and trace elements indicate that the sequence show more weathered characteristics than the Chinese Loess Plateau and originated from the Chinese Loess Plateau. These features are in harmony with the previous studies in Korea.
