  • A phutosociological study on the Mongolian oak forest was carried out on Mt. Sorak by the Z-M method. The Mongolian oak forest was classified into one oder, two alliances, one assoication and three commuities; Rhododendro-Quercetalia mongolicae Kim 1990 Lindero-Quercion monogolicae Kim 1990 Vaccinium hirtum v. koreanum-Quercus monogolica community Lespedeza maximowiczii-Quercus monogolica community Pino koreiensis-Quercion mongolicae Kim 1992 Typical community Lichno-Quercetrum monofolicae Kim 1992 Total vascular plant species in invesitigatied sites consited of 193 taxa, and their life-form composition was $H-D_1-R_5-e$ type.

  • Seral changes in floristic composition during abandoned field succession after shifting cultivation was investigated in eastern Kangwon-Do, Korea. According to the DCA ordination based on the floristic composition, sere of the dominant species was shown as follows: Digitaria sanguinalis, Persicaria spp., Commelina communis etc. in the annual stage (0∼1 years); Erigeron spp., Artemisia spp., Rubus crataegus etc. in the Erigeron-Artemisia stage (2∼6 years); Pinus densiflora, Salix spp., Miscanthus sinensis, Arundinella hirta etc. in the shrub - earlier tree stage (10∼25 years); P. densiflora, Quercus mongolica, Spodiopogon sibiricus etc. in the mid-tree stage (25∼50 years); Q. mongolica, Tripterigium regelii, Lespedeza maximowiczii, Carex siderosticta etc. in the latter tree stage (50∼80 years). In mid-tree stage, size-frequency distribution of P. densiflora was plotted as a platycurtic curve and that of Q. mongolica as a reverse J-shaped curve, which meant P. densiflora was thinned through interspecific competition and Q. mongolica was regenerated by itself in the later tree stage.

Diversity of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi in Arable and Natural Soils in Korea

  • The diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AM) was investigated in cultivated and natural fold sites or chungbuk, Korea. soils were collected from rhizosphere or Sorghum bicolor, Fagopyrum esculentum and Glycine max in cultivated sites, and of Miscanthus sinensis, Glycine soja and Lespedeza cuneata in natural sites. Total 20 species of Glomalean fungi were found in this study. Species richness, species diversity and density of AM fungi were significantly lower in the arable sites. While only AM fungal spores belong to Glomus and Acaulospora were found in arable fold sites, more diverse fungal spores including Gigasporaceae were found in natural grasslands. AM fungal spore composition did not significantly differ among crop plant species. Results suggest that the agricultural practices were significantly influenced on AM fungal community structures and mycorrhizal developments.

  • This study characterized the full range of vegetation in a upland wetland (marshland) in Korea. Classified community types were used to describe vegetation at the marshland and adjacent areas. The communities contained 44 species of vascular plants and all species were identified into four plant community types. The Rhododendron yedoense f. poukhanense type and Lespedeza cyrtobotrya type had a high representation infacultative upland species (FU) and obligate upland species (OU), respectively. The monocot type was dominant in marshland by Miscanthuns saccharifloruc and contained 14 species. Together the three areas contained four species, with the strongest indicator species being Ranunculus acris var. nipponicus, Rhododendron yedoense f. poukhanense, Hemerocallis fulva, and Miscanthuns sinensis var. purpurascens. Shannon-Weaver index of diversity also varied among the community types (F = 18.9, df = 2), with the types FU having significantly higher value (3.467) than the others (1.125 for type FW and 1.239 for type OU).

  • Vegetatiion structure and population dynamcis of pine needle gall midge were investigated from 1980 to 1982 at the southern part of Palgong mountain near Daegu. The results of investigation at the areas of A (pure stand), B(30% mixed forest) adn C(60% mixed forest) were as follow; Vegeation of 3 areas were not classified by the species diversity, but by the unequal distribution of Alnus hirsuta, Robinia pseudo-acacia, Lespedeza cyrtobotrya, Quercus variabilis and vitality of Pinus densiflora at the area C was low, due to shadow by broad-leaf trees. Soil environmental factors at 3 areas not characteristic, but the average of humus contents showed high significance and the order was A

  • The investigation on the grassland type was conducted by the data in the previous these (Park 1963, '64, '65, '66). Total Polyphenols, Total Flavonoid Contents, and Antioxidant Activity of Korean Natural and Medicinal Plants (자생식물과 생약자원 추출물의 폴리페놀, 플라보노이드 함량 및 항산화 활성 탐색)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate total polyphenols, total flavonoid, and DPPH radical scavenging activity in 26 species of Korean natural plants and 14 species of medicinal plant extracts. The plant containing the highest total polyphenols and total flavonoids were Plantago asiatica, and Lespedeza cuneata G. Don, respectively. The content of polyphenols and flavonoids in natural plants was the highest in Lespedeza cuneata G. Don, which also demonstrated high DPPH radical scavenging activity. In medicinal plant extract, Saururus chinensis (Lour.) Baill and Artemisiae Asiaticae Herba had the highest level of total polyphenols (194.60 and 203.92 mg/g extract, respectively) and DPPH radical scavenging activity. Diospyros kaki Thunb and Dryopteris crassirhizoma did not contain high levels of total polyphenols (112.98, 121.46 mg/g extract, respectively) and flavonoids (46.10, 58.69 mg/g extract respectively), but DPPH radical scavenging activity was relatively high. Further study regarding plants that exhibit higher total polyphenols, total flavonoid, and DPPH radical scavenging activity is needed.

Phytosociological Study of Weed Vegetation around the Climbing Paths on Mt. Chungyeong (경기도 축령산 등산로 주변 잡초 식생의 식물사회학적 연구)

  • Mountain Chungyeong, 879m in altitude, is located in the northeast of the middle area in Korea. Around Mt. Chungyeong, many Korean endemic and rare plants are populated, so it is considered a very important biogeographical area where the temperature zones of northern and southern plants are crossed. Because it is close to Seoul, a capital of Korea, it is a common mountain where many tourists visit frequently. Continuous tourist's visit may cause a bad influence on vegetation around the climbing paths. Therefor, weed community around the climbing paths on Mt. Chungyeong, where visitors exert a bad influence directly on its community by coming in and out, was surveyed phytosocialogically. Our surveys have been accomplished from August, 2001 to September, 2002. weed communities formed around the climbing paths on Mt. Chungyeong were divided into several patterns and analysed. They have been divided into 5 communities and 5 subcommunities. Community A: Plantago asiatica community, A-a: Erigeron annuus subcommunity, A-b: Carex. lanceolata subcommunity, B: Pseudostellaria palibiniana community, B-a: Carex siderosticta subcommunity, B-b: Galium trachyspermum subcommunity, C: Pueraria thunbergiana community, D: Lespedeza maximowiczii community, E: Rubus crataegifolius community, F: Oplismenus undulatifolius community, The flora surveyed in these communities was constituted of 47 families, 101 genera, 17 varieties, and 149 species. Wild plants such as Plantago asiatica, Erigeron annuus, Erigeron strigosus, Pueraria thunbergiana, Lespedeza maximowiezii, Rubus crataegifolius, Artemisia princeps var. orientalis, Artemisia japonica and Lysimachia clethroides were mostly light loving plants and higher resistant plants against the stamping pressure. Our result from the ranking all surveyed areas by the Bray-Curtis ordination method was very similar to the results from phytosocialogical table analysis.

  • A pot experiment with $P^{32}$ was carried out to investigate the soil phosphorus availability to four leguminous forage crops and three graminaceous, of black volcanic ash soil and red one. Soil phosphorus was extracted with 6 different extractants and also fractionated in Fe, Al and Ca phosphorus. The results were: 1) Soil phosphorus availability was in decreasing order of Italian rye grass${\gg}$ soybean> cassia> corn> weeping love grass${\gg}$ Korean lespedeza> Red clover and they might be grouped into three levels by A-value, over 1000, 200-500 and below 40 $p_{2}O_{5}\;kg/ha$. 2) The amount of various available phosphorus and phosoborus fraction in the black soil was higher than that in the red soil. No difference in phosphorus availabiliy to forage crops was shown between two soils. Therefore an extractant able to draw out similar amount of phosphorus from two soil will be suitable for determining the phosphorus availability index. 3) Two extractants, one extracting 20 ppm as maximum and the other extracting 100 ppm as minimum will be recommendable for determining the availability of phosphorus; the former for red clover and Lespedeza and the latter for others. Truog method may be good for the former but no appropriate method for the latter was found in the methods used. 4) T/R ratios of legumes were negatively correlated at 5% level with % phosphorus from fertilizer (% pdF). Legumes showed below 50 of % pdF over 5 of T/R ratio and over 80 of % pdF below 5 of T/R.

Flora and Vegetation of Resources Plants in the Mt. Hansuk(Kangwon-do) (한석산의 자원식물상과 식생)

  • This study was to establish the floristic composition and vegetation of resources vascular plants of Mt. Hansuk(1,119.1m; $128^{\circ}15';31'E,\;38^{\circ}02'55'N$). This work was conducted during the period of 1995. Resources vascular plants were composed of 85 families, 229 genera, 370 species, 72 varieties and 10 formae, totaling 452 taxa. Among the investigated resources plants, 15 taxa(2.6%) were Korean endemic species. The forest were comparatively well conserved by Pteridophyta calculation(Pte-Q), 1.34 Useful resources plants were edible source(43.8%), pasture source(38.1%), medicinal source(33.2%), ornamental source(11.9%) and timber source(4.9%) respectively. The forest vegetion was classified into 1 order, 1 alliances and 2 communities; Rhododendro - Quercetalia mongolicae Kim 1990 Lindero - Quercion mongolicae Kim 1990 A. Lespedeza maximowiczii - Quercus mongolica Community B. Carex humilis v. nana - Pinus densiflora Community
