A automated noncontact weight system for pigs consisted of a CCD-type video camera and 10 photo sensors connected to a computer. In the experiment 20 pigs(Large Yorkshire $\times$ Landrace breed) weighing from 95kg to 115kg were used. Pig's original image data was transformed to a binary image an image excluding head and tail portion from the whole binary image and the area of pig was calculated. Then pig's volume was calculated by multiplying the area by the body hight measured with photo sensors. The correlation equation between the above volume(x) and pig's weight was y=0.0007 x -9.2152($R^2$=0.9965) Performance of a automated noncontact weighing system for pigs was tested with this equation. The results showed $\pm$0.65kg average error and 1.63kg maximum error. It was concluded that performance of a automated noncontact weighing system is excellent.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of Silybum marianum seed (SMS) extract on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, fecal noxious gas emission, and hematology parameters in weaned piglets. A total of 120, 21-day-old weaned piglets ([Yorkshire × Landrace] × Duroc) were randomly assigned to 3 groups based on the average initial body weight (6.46 ± 0.45 kg). There were 8 replicate pens per treatment and 5 pigs (mixed sex) per pen. The experimental period was 42 days. Dietary groups included a basal diet, and a basal diet supplemented with 0.05% or 0.10% SMS extract. Feeding weaned piglets with SMS extract containing diet significantly increased average daily gain and average daily feed intake. Additionally, the supplementation of SMS extract had no significant effects on nutrient digestibility, serum hematology, and fecal noxious gas emission parameters. We considered that the supplementation of SMS extract had positive effects on the voluntary feed intake in weaned piglets, thus improving growth performance.
Feed processing methods can substantially enhance the nutrient value of feed. The aim of our study was to compare the effects of mash or crumble feed on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, back-fat thickness, and carcass quality of growing-finishing pigs. In total, 50 ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Duroc) growing pigs with initial body weight of 46.24 ± 3.57 kg were randomly assigned to two dietary treatment groups. The two dietary treatments were: 1) mash and 2) crumble feed forms for 14 weeks of trials. Five replication pens per treatment, comprised five pigs (2 males and 3 females) each. Growth performance, nutrient digestibility, back-fat thickness, and carcass quality were observed at different weeks. There were no significant differences in growth performance, nutrient digestibility, back-fat thickness, and carcass quality throughout the experimental trial. Further study is required to understand the effects of mash and crumble feed on growing-finishing pigs.
A total of 16 sows (average parity = 3.5 ± 0.10, standard deviation = 2.05) and their newborn pigs (Duroc × [Landrace × Yorkshire], initial body weight 1.53 ± 0.07 kg) were used in a 21-day study. On day 3 of age, piglets along with their dam were divided into two groups: CON and TRT. CON group piglets did not receive any iron injection while, TRT group piglets received 200 mg of injectable iron (GleptoForte) in a single dose. The administration of iron at day-3 of birth improved weaning body weight and overall average daily gain in sucking piglets compared with their control counterparts. For blood criteria, injection of 200 mg of iron improved serum iron values and hematocrit and decreased total iron binding capacity (TIBC) during the day 21 period. In summary, 200 mg iron injection at birth resulted in greater growth performance and blood iron status. These results indicate that providing 200 mg of injectable iron is sufficient to optimize the growth performance and blood iron status of suckling piglets.

This study was conducted to evaluate agronomic traits and classify phylogenetic characteristics of Korean wheat landraces (KWLs) collected in Gyeongnam province. We used the squash method for chromosome observation, image analysis to examine seed characteristics, and genotyping using commercial single-nucleotide polymorphism chips to construct a phylogenetic tree. All KWLs contained 42 chromosomes and two pairs of microsatellites as observed in Keumgang, a Korean wheat cultivar. All KWLs showed smaller seed traits compared with those of Keumgang, although KWL-3 had a larger embryo length than that of Keumgang. Among agronomic traits compared with those of Keumgang, all KWLs had a late heading date and ripening period except for KWL-3, which showed the smallest culm and spike length. KWL-1 had the lowest tiller, highest floret, and grain number. All KWLs showed a lower thousand grain weight than that of Keumgang because of their smaller seeds. In the variation of variety and area, the heading date, ripening period, tiller number, and floret number were affected by the cultivation area, whereas the culm length, spike length, and 1000 grain weight were affected by the variety. Correlation distribution analysis showed differences in agronomic traits according to the cultivation area, and the heading date was positively correlated with the culm length and floret number in three cultivation areas. Principal component analysis explained that the heading date had a positive relationship with the ripening period and floret number and a negative relationship with the tiller number. Principal component analysis also revealed that all KWLs had a lower thousand grain weight than that of Keumgang. Phylogenetic tree showed that KWL-1 was near KWL-3, while KWL-2 was near KWL-4. All KWLs were genetically near the Korean wheat cultivars milsung and saeol, whereas they were genetically far from the Korean wheat cultivars goso and olgrue.
A total of 192 Korean landraces were investigated for the comparison of each other as useful germplasm to organic farming and examined correlation between quantitative traits. Almost Korean landraces were classified into medium-heading variety and average days from seeding to heading was 111.1 days. Plant height and culm length were longer about 20∼40cm than general Japonica cultivar. Average width of leaf blade and average length of panicle were 1.3cm and 22.4cm, respectively, Average number of panicles per plant was 10.0 and almost varieties showed low tilling habit. Average length/width ratio of brown rice was 1.7 and several varieties were long grain type and average 1,000 grain weight was 21.6g. In correlation coefficient among quantitative traits, positive significant correlations were observed between culm length and leaf width, days from seeding to heading, but negative correlations were observed between days from seeding to heading and 1000 grain weight. 27.1% of Korean landraces showed weak and lodging degree in culm strength and 3.6% of total varieties showed purple margin on leaf blade and leaf sheath. In leaf blade angle and flag leaf angle, erect type was 46.9% and 10.9%, respectively. 24.0% of total varieties showed the slow and late degree of leaf senescence. The rate of awned type, waxy type and brown seed coat were 74.5%, 20.3% and 4.2%, respectively. The color of stigma, spikelet, apiculus and awn showed diverse color such as white, brown, red and purple.
This study was carried out to compare the quality characteristics of korean native black pork (KNP) and modern genotype pork (MGP) during refrigerated storage after thawing. M. longissimus from 5 Korean native black barrows of 65.3 kg and 5 modern genotype barrows ($Landrace{\times}Yorkshire{\times}Duroc$) of 114.3 kg were frozen at $-80^{\circ}C$ for 1 month and stored at $2{\pm}0.3^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. The carcass weight and dressing percentage was significantly lower in pork from Korean native black pigs than modern genotype pigs (p<0.05). The crude fat and sensory quality were significantly higher in KNP than in MGP (p<0.05), and moisture, myristic acid, gamma-linolenic acid, linolenic acid, and cis-5,8,11,14,17-eicosapentaenoic acid levels were significantly lower in KNP (p<0.05). The pH value was significantly higher in KNP than in MGP after 5 days of storage (p<0.05). Drip loss was significantly lower in KNP than in MGP during storage (p<0.05). The TBARS value was significantly higher in KNP than in MGP after 5 days of storage (p<0.05). Overall, KNP had lower moisture and unsaturated fatty acid levels relative to MGP and showed less oxidative stability during storage, however it had higher crude fat content, water-holding capacity, sensory quality and color stability than MGP.
A statistical analysis of 4,380 non-glutinous landrace rice germplasm collected from four East Asian countries namely South Korea (1,032), North Korea (994), Japan (800), and China (528) was conducted using normal distribution, variability index value (VIV), analysis of variation (ANOVA), and Duncan's multiple range test (DMRT) based on a data obtained from Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS) analysis. In normal distribution, the average protein content was 8.2%, and the non-glutinous rice amylose, ranging over 10%, was found to be 22.0%. Protein content in most gremplasm was between 5.4 and 10.9%, and amylose content was between 15.0 and 28.9%. The VIV was 0.50 for protein, and 0.81 for non-glutinous rice amylose content. The average amylose content was 23.34% in Chinese, 21.55% in South Korean, 21.45% in Japanese, and 20.48% in North Korean resources, while the average protein content was found to be 9.02% in Chinese, 8.06% in Japanese, 8.04% in North Korean, and 7.99% in South Korean resources. ANOVA of amylose and protein content showed significant differences at p=0.01. The F-test value for amylose content was 94.92, and for protein content was 81.82 compared to the critical value of 3.79. DMRT of amylose and protein content revealed significant differences (p<0.01). Among the various germplasm obtained from different countries, that from North Korean had the lowest level of amylose content, whereas that from South Korea had the lowest level of protein content than all other resources. Chinese resources had the highest level of amylose and protein content. It is recommended to use these results in breeding fields.
Rice blast (Magnaporthe oryza B.) is one of the most important diseases in rice that causing great yield losses every year around the world. It is important to screen valuable genetic resources for improving blast resistance. This study was conducted to identify the blast resistance in 279 Korean rice landraces using blast nursery tests and isolate inoculum screening. The results showed that 11 landrace accessions found to be resistant to rice blast in blast nursery and inoculation screening tests and the degree of lesions in most accessions showed that they were susceptible to reactions. In order to find the distribution of blast resistant genes, a molecular survey was conducted to identify the presence of major blast resistance (R) gene in 279 Korean landraces. The results revealed that their frequency distribution was Pik-m (36.2%), Piz (25.4%), Pit (13.6%), and Pik (10%). Besides, the frequency distribution of Piz-t, Pii, Pik-m/Pik-p, Pi-39(t), Pib, Pi-d(t)2, Pita/Pita-2 and Pi-ta genes were identified as less than 10%. The results did not consist with the reactions against blast diseases between genotypes and phenotypic part of the nursery tests and isolate inoculation. For concluding these results, we used genome-wide SSR markers that have closely been located with resistance genes. The PCoA analysis showed that the landrace accessions formed largely two distinct groups according to their degree of blast resistance. By comparing genetic diversities using polymorphic information contents (PIC) value among the resistant, total and susceptible landraces, we found that PIC values decreased in four SSR markers and increased in six markers in the resistant accessions, which showed contrary to total and susceptible groups. These regions might be linked to resistance alleles. In this study, we evaluated the degree of blast resistance and the information about the distribution of rice blast resistant genes in Korean rice landraces. This study might be the basis for association analysis of blast resistance in rice.
This study was carried out to compare the quality characteristics including aroma compounds and pattern of M. Biceps femoris from Korean native black pigs (70kg, 6 months, KNP) and modern genotype pigs (103kg, 6 months, Landrace×Yorkshire, MGP) during vacuum-storage at 2±0.2℃ for 12 days. KNP had high contents of crude protein and ash, but low content of moisture as compared to MGP (p<0.05). KNP showed lower pH and higher cooking loss than MGP (p<0.05) during storage. CIE a* and b* values of KNP significantly higher during storage as compared to those of MGP (p<0.05). TBARS value of KNP significantly increased after 8 days as compared to that of MGP (p<0.05). Shear force value of KNP was higher than that of MGP until 8 days (p<0.05). Volatiles by SPME-GS/MS was slightly different between KNP and MGP, but aroma pattern by electronic nose was not different. Therefore, KNP had redder and darker color, higher cooking loss and harder texture than MGP. The sensory quality of KNP was better than those of MGP (p<0.05), although aroma characteristics by instruments were not different between KNP and MGP.
