A method of stochastic response analysis of base-isolated fluid-filled pool structures subject to random ground excitations is studied. Fluid-structure interaction effects between the flexible walls and contained fluid are taken into account in the form of added mass matrix derived by FEM modeling of the contained fluid motion. The stationary ground excitation is represented by Modified Clough-Penzien spectral model and the nonstationary one is obtained by imposing an envelope function on the stationary one. The stationary and nonstationary response statistics of the two different isolation systems are obtained by solving the governing Lyapunov covariance matrix differential equations.
The earthquake-induced liquefaction of ground brings high possibility of failure of lifeline. If subsurface liquefaction is detected immediately after an earthquake the damage caused by the failure of lifeline can be reduced. The goal is achieved by deploying many accelerometers in the area of possible liquefaction and collecting records through a wireless network. This paper attempts to develop a measure to interpret the collected data oft surface motion and to assess the thickness of liquefied layers. For this purpose. both analysis of earthquake records and shaking table tests on model ground were carried out. It was shown that the thickness of liquefied layers can be assessed by using the maximum acceleration and the spectrum intensity at the surface.
In this study, vertical acceleration of center of mass was observed along normal gait phases in 9 healthy male volunteers (aged $25.7{\pm}2.18$). The developed wireless accelerometric device was attached on the intervertebral space between L3 and L4 using a semi-elastic waist belt. A three-dimensional motion analysis system, synchronized with the accelerometry, was used for detecting gait phases. There was no significant correlation between the body weight and the acceleration. The first peak curve covered loading response phase. The second downward peak point was matched accurately with the opposite toe-off. In mid-stance and terminal stance, the acceleration curve highly resembled the vertical ground reaction force curve. There was no significant difference in timing between the final upward peak point and the initial contact. Therefore, the developed accelerometry system would be helpful in determining determine temporal gait pattems in patients with gait disorders.
In this study, the characteristics of crossing a river of Ground Armored Vehicle (GAV) were evaluated by numerical method and real size tests. 3-D hybrid mesh systems were constructed by 3-D models of the GAV, and a commercial software, FLUENT, was used in numerical analysis. In order to deal with multi-phase problem (air and water), Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method was used, and Moving and Deforming Mesh (MDM) was adapted for unsteady motion of GAV. There were two steps in this research. Firstly, stability of the GAV which cruised a river was evaluated by changing several shapes of water-proof-front-wing of the GAV in steady state, and compared results (free surface shape and drag value in 10km/h) with those of real size tests. Secondly, results of unsteady analysis considering weight and moment of inertia of the GAV were presented. There were showed a maximum velocity with a designed water jet and dynamic stability including pitch, roll, and yaw moment. Based on these results, the optimal shape of water-proof-front-wing of the GAV was determined for a proto-type of the GAV.

A novel method based on Surf points is proposed to detect and lock-track single ground target in aerial videos. Videos captured by moving cameras contain complex motions, which bring difficulty in moving object detection. Our approach contains three parts: moving target template detection, search area estimation and target tracking. Global motion estimation and compensation are first made by grids-sampling Surf points selecting and matching. And then, the single ground target is detected by joint spatial-temporal information processing. The temporal process is made by calculating difference between compensated reference and current image and the spatial process is implementing morphological operations and adaptive binarization. The second part improves KALMAN filter with surf points scale information to predict target position and search area adaptively. Lastly, the local Surf points of target template are matched in this search region to realize target tracking. The long-term tracking is updated following target scaling, occlusion and large deformation. Experimental results show that the algorithm can correctly detect small moving target in dynamic scenes with complex motions. It is robust to vehicle dithering and target scale changing, rotation, especially partial occlusion or temporal complete occlusion. Comparing with traditional algorithms, our method enables real time operation, processing $520{\times}390$ frames at around 15fps.

In this study, shape memory alloy damper with characteristics of pseudoelastic hysteresis for helicopter rotor blades are investigated. SMAs can be available in damping augmentation of vibrating structures. SMAs show large hysteresis in the process of pseudoelastic austenite-martensite phase transformation which takes place while subjected to loading above the austenite finish temperature. Since SMAs display pseudoelastic hysteresis behavior over large strain ranges, a significant amount of energy dissipation is possible. A damper can be designed with SMA wires prestressed to a baseline level somewhere in the middle of the pseudoelastic stress range. An experimental study of the effects of pre-strain and cyclic strain amplitude as well as frequency on the damping behavior of pseudoelastic shape memory alloy wires are performed. The effects of the shape memory alloy damper on aeroelastic and ground resonance stability of helicopter are studied. In aeroelastic stability, the dynamic characteristics of blades related to pitch angle and the amplitude of lag motion for the rotor equipped with SMA damper were examined. The performance of SMA damper on ground resonance instability are presented through the frequencies and modal damping with respect to rotating speed.
Recently, landslides have frequently occurred on natural slopes during periods of intense rainfall. With a rapidly increasing population on or near steep terrain in Korea, landslides have become one of the most significant natural hazards. Thus, it is necessary to protect people from landslides and to minimize the damage of houses, roads and other facilities. To accomplish this goal, many landslide prediction methods have been developed in the world. In this study, a simple landslide prediction system that enables people to escape the endangered area is introduced. The system is focused to debris flows which happen frequently during periods of intense rainfall. The system is based on the wireless sensor network (WSN) that is composed of sensor nodes, gateway, and server system. Sensor nodes comprising a sensing part and a communication part are developed to detect ground movement. Sensing part is designed to measure inclination angle and acceleration accurately, and communication part is deployed with Bluetooth (IEEE 802.15.1) module to transmit the data to the gateway. To verify the feasibility of this landslide prediction system, a series of experimental studies was performed at a small-scale earth slope equipped with an artificial rainfall dropping device. It is found that sensing nodes installed at slope can detect the ground motion when the slope starts to move. It is expected that the landslide prediction system by wireless senor network can provide early warnings when landslides such as debris flow occurs.
One-dimensional equivalent linear site response analysis is widely used in practice due to its simplicity, requiring only few input parameters, and low computational cost. The main limitation of the procedure is that it is essentially a linear method, in which the time dependent change in the soil properties cannot be modeled and constant values of shear modulus and damping is used throughout the duration of the analysis. Various forms of modified equivalent linear analyses have been developed to enhance the accuracy of the equivalent linear method by incorporating the dependence of the shear strain with the loading frequency. The methods are identical in that it uses the shear strain Fourier spectrum as the backbone of the analysis, but differ in the method in which the strain Fourier spectrum is smoothed. This study used two domestically measured soil profiles to perform a series of nonlinear, equivalent linear, and modified equivalent linear site response analyses to verify the accuracy of two modified procedures. The results of the analyses indicate that the modified equivalent linear analysis can highly overestimate the amplification of the high frequency components of the ground motion. The degree of overestimation is dependent on the characteristics of the input ground motion. Use of a motion rich in high frequency contents can result in unrealistic response.

The ground-motion (GM) attenuation relations available in Korea has required the validation process for large earthquakes since most of them were developed based on small earthquake database, The Fukuoka earthquake (M=7.0) that occurred near the Korean Peninsula provides invaluable data to indirectly evaluate the attenuation characteristics of the strong GM in Korea. The GM levels (PGA, SA) obtained from the KIK-net downhole stations near the epicenter (R<100km) are reasonably predicted by the GM attenuation relation developed by KEPRI in 2003 for the Kori NPP site, the result of which validates the use of KEPRI GM attenuation relation for predicting GM induced by future large earthquakes. Also, the comparison between the Osaki spectra and response spectra of KIK-net downhole data reveals that the amplitude levels of Osaki spectra are higher than the spectra from KIK-net stations which are believed to be installed at the seismic basement.
The purpose of this study was to analyze kinematic quantitative factors required of a forehand counter drive in table tennis through 3-D analysis. Four national table tennis players participated in this study. The mean of elapsed time for total drive motion was $1.009{\pm}0.23\;s$. At the phase of impact B1 was the fastest as 0.075 s. This may affect efficiency in the initial velocity and spin of the ball by making a powerful counter drive. The pattern of center of mass showed that it moved back and returned to where it was then moved forward. At the back swing, lower stance made wide base of support and a stronger and safer stance. It may help increasing the ball spin. Angle of the elbow was extended up to $110.75{\pm}1.25^{\circ}$ at the back swing and the angle decreased by $93.75{\pm}3.51^{\circ}$ at impact. Decreased rotation range of swinging arm increased linear velocity of racket-head and impulse on the ball. Eventually it led more spin to the ball and maximized the ball speed. Angle of knee joint decreased from ready position to back swing, then increased from the moment of the impact and decreased at the follow thorough. The velocity of racket-head was the fastest at impact of phase 2. Horizontal velocity was $7796.5{\pm}362\;mm/s$ and vertical velocity was $4589.4{\pm}298.4\;mm/s$ at the moment. It may help increase the speed and spin of the ball in a moment. The means of each ground reaction force result showed maximum at the back swing(E2) except A2. Vertical ground reaction force means suggest that all males and females showed maximum vertical power(E2), The maximum power of means was $499.7{\pm}38.8\;N$ for male players and $519.5{\pm}136.7\;N$ for female players.
