  • It is well known that acoustic emission (AE) is indicator of rock fracturing or damage as rock is brought to failure under the uniaxial compressive loads. In this paper, an experimental study on the source location of acoustic emission on the cylindrical specimens of granite under uniaxial compression test was made. The AE source location was made by measuring the six channel AE data. Comparing to this experiment, the numerical method is applied to model the initiation and propagation of fracture by AE using a numerical code, RFPA (Realistic Failure Process Analysis). This code incorporates the mesoscopic heterogeneity in Young's modulus and rock strength characteristic of rock masses. In the numerical models, values of Young's modulus and rock strength are realized according to a Weibull distribution in which the distribution parameters represent the level of heterogeneity of the medium. The results of the simulations show that RFPA can be used not only to produce acoustic emission similar to those measurements in our experiments, but also to predict fracturing patterns under uniaxial loading condition.

  • This study was carried out on the thermal transmission on account of variation of weaves and researched on the selection of the most suitable weaves for warmth. Also the interrelation among the density, thickness and thermal transmission by different weaves was studied, the author has woven three fundamental weaves, five weaves derived from the fundamental weaves and two special weaves for the purpose of experiment. In weaving of fabrics for experiments the lever type hand loom was used. Testing of texture was carried out according to KS and ASTM. The thermal transmission was also tested by as cooling method which were developed by the author. The conclusions of experiments were as follows. 1. Matt weaves, honey comb weaves and satin weaves having long floating yarns have large cover factor and were thicker. these structures of the weaves were good in warmth. 2. Thermal transmission was reciprocated to the cover factor, thickness and value of cover factor multiplied by thickness : It was found that the weaves of woven fabrics for warmth had better use of satin weaves, Matt weaves, Granite weaves and Honey comb weaves. In the time of warmth is not the first purpose, had better use of Rib weaves. Plain weaves and Twill weaves with thin thickness and high thermal transmission.

  • In this study, a probabilistic prediction model for debris flow occurrence was developed using a logistic regression analysis. The model can be applicable to metamorphic rocks and granite area. In order to develop the prediction model, detailed field survey and laboratory soil tests were conducted both in the northern and the southern Gyeonggi province and in Sangju, Gyeongbuk province, Korea. The six landslide triggering factors were selected by a logistic regression analysis as well as several basic statistical analyses. The six factors consist of two topographic factors and four geological and geotechnical factors. The model assigns a weight value to each selected factor. The verification results reveal that the model has 86.5% of prediction accuracy. Therefore, it is possible to predict landslide occurrence in a probabilistic and quantitative manner.

  • The propagation mechanism of a detonation pressure with fully coupled charge is clarified and the blasting pressure propagated in rock mass is derived from the application of shock wave theory. Probabilistic distribution is obtained by using explosion tests on emulsion and rock property tests on granite in Seoul and then the probabilistic distribution of the blasting pressure is derived from their properties. The probabilistic distributions of explosive properties and rock properties show a normal distribution so that the blasting pressure propagated in rock can be also regarded as a normal distribution. Parametric analysis was performed to pinpoint the most influential parameter that affects the blasting pressure and it was found that the detonation velocity is the most sensitive parameter. Moreover, uncertainty analysis was performed to figure out the effect of each parameter uncertainty on the uncertainty of blasting pressure. Its result showed that uncertainty of natural rock properties constitutes the main portion of blasting pressure uncertainty rather than that of explosive properties.

  • Soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) is a unique characteristic that should be considered In the analysis of unsaturated soil and prediction of unsaturated properties. However, the volume change of soil specimens that happens in the existing apparatus affects the SWCC, Therefore, In this study, we intended to obtain more appropriate SWCC by measuring the change In the volume of the specimen in the SWCC tests. The measured change of void ratio indicates that the saturation step prior to the test changes the original structure of the soil specimen. Thus we carried out the test far the same specimen omitting the saturation step prior to the test. The change of void ratio by this test procedure is relatively small.

  • This research area is a greate section of triple tunnels that passes through the fault fractured zone the in the granite area. In this area, tunnel section, pillar width and overburden height are changed consecutively due to declivity of 1 : 4.5 and slope formation of upper part as changed section. That is, stability estimation for each section varying pillar width can be conducted because tunnel diameter changes gradually from 0.5D to 1.0D according to distance of pillar width. We have estimated the stability of pillar width in triple tunnels with monitoring value, and compared the stability with results of numerical analysis.

  • Inserting a nozzle assembly into a removed cutting space during a continuous cutting operation is necessary in rock excavation using an abrasive waterjet. In this study, a combined two nozzle assembly is used to secure enough removal width. The shape of the cut space is affected by the geometric parameters (standoff distance, nozzle angle, and vertical distance between the nozzle tips) of the combined nozzle assembly. Abrasive waterjet cutting tests are performed with various geometric parameters for granite rock specimens. Optimized geometric parameters for the nozzle inserting process are determined and verified through the experimental tests.

  • The rationalization for Tunnel Drifting is based on the high productivity which is achievable due to Continuous work with a Jumbo Drill, resulting in a much higher efficiency them the Conventional method of blasting, mucking and supporting services. Large projects of over 4,000m Tunnel Drifting are condidated to justify the use of a Jumbo Drill with a combination of superior explosives, machinery and techniques. During a Tunnel Drifting test, Gulita, Nabit and slurry made by Nitro Nobel were employed with following results. 1, Conditions: a. Granite Rock with Two free face b. Burden (W), 2m c. Simal-taneous Detonation h. After the blasting resultant rock size was Less 40% of the 0.3m Lumps. 2. Calculation results W=q/Wn=100cm‥‥‥Burden in simultaneous blasting 0.865kg(7.7ea)/hole ‥‥‥Amount of charge but hole pitch is 1.5W-2W The estimated cost of using a Jumbo Drill for the Construction of a 3,000,000 bbL sub-surface oil storage would be as follows: This calculation is based on the Jumbo Drill advancing 3.6m per blasting cycle. Unit cost/bbL Excavation $3.13 The attached sheet shows ideal Drilling pattern with Burn Cut & Smooth blasting method. In conclusion, it is my opinion that this method will assure safety and save cost and improve our technical know-how.

  • The mono-layer cover system is composed of soils only as a filling material and various plants are planted on the surface to control the water balance in the cover system. In this paper, the mono-layer cover system was considered as an alternative landfill final cover system and developed a model that could utilize industrial by-product (especially, coal ash & phosphogypsum) as additive filling materials. The mixture of granite soil, coal ash, and phosphogypsum was placed as a cover material in a box constructed with cement. Laboratory tests were carried out to investigate the environmental effect on the utilization of coal ash & phosphogypsum and to determine the mxing ratio of each materials. In the leaching test, all materials showed lower heavy metal concentration than the threshold values of regulation. The optimum mixing ratio of materials which was applied to field model test was determined to soil (4) : coal ash (1) : phosphogypsum (1) on the volume base. Field model tests were continued from February to July, 2004 in the soil box that was constructed with cement block. It was verified that coal ash and phospogypsum mixed with soil was to be safe environmentally and the water balance of mono-layer cover system was reasonable.
