  • The weathered two-mica granite is widely distributed in Korea and called a kind of ground rock for kaolin. The major minerla compositions are consist of this quartz, feldspar, mica and clay mineral. At present, only a small portion of this granite is used as the material for the low-grade tile industry due to the low S.K. value and the high contents of impurities such as Fe2O3 and FeO. The low S.K. value is caused by feldspars not weathered to clay minerals. The refinement of this thus has been required for the recent shortage of the resources of high-grade one. This paper concerns an optimum hydrothermal treatment condition to refine the low-grade weathered two-mica granite of which impurities are feldspar mineral and Fe2O3. FeO components in using for the main material of ceramic industry. And then, from this result, we tried to fine out the basic formation mechanism of clay mineral from feldspar etc and develope the effectual utilization method of this.

  • Rainfall-induced landslides in a weathered granite soil slope have mostly relative shallow slip surfaces above the groundwater table The pore-water pressure of soil above the groundwater table is usually negative. This negative pore-water pressure(or matric suction) has been found to make a large contribution to the slope stability. Therefore, the variation of in-situ matric suction profiles with time in a soil slope should be understood. In this study, a field measurement program was carried out from June to August, 2001 to monitor in-situ matric suctions and volumetric water contents in a weathered granite soil slope. The influence of climatic conditions on the variation of in-situ matric suctions could be found to decrease rapidly with depth. It could be found that decrement of matric suction induced by precipitation is affected not only by the amount and duration of rainfalls but also by the initial matric suction just prior to rainstorms. The soil-water characteristic from the field monitoring tends toward the wetting path of SWCC obtained from the laboratory test.

  • This paper summarizes the analysis of granite microfines from California for use in portland cement concrete. For reference, the granite microfines were compared to microfines used in previous International Center for Aggregates Research(ICAR) projects. The particle shape characteristics, based on the packing density results, were assessed and apparent clay content, based on the methylene blue value test, was evaluated. Also, the physical properties of the microfines were confirmed in self-consolidating mortar mixtures.

  • In this paper, we make a study on comparison and evaluation of the seoul granite properties, which are unit weight, uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength and, point load strength. The typical result are as follow- 1. From the measured value of point load strength anisotropy index, the seoul granite is considered to be homogeneous. 2. There is a linear relationship between uniaxial compressive strength and size corrected point load strength index. 3. Brazilian tensile strength and size corrected point load strength index are closely tied together.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the problem of confusing the names of Chinese granite used in Korean construction work and suggest the improvement plans for them. Interviews of the experts from the stone company, studies on the existing research literature, and analyses of construction work documents of the 23 construction works which used Chinese granite were carried out to analyze the real condition of name confusion of granite stone. In the analytical result of the real condition, name confusion was classified into 4 types and problems derived from it were done into 4 ones. An additional survey was carried out targeting 34 masonry experts to draw the improvement plans based on the analytical results of the real condition of name confusion. The results show that the most fundamental solution is to continue to make efforts to use exact names when main agents related to construction works communicate with each other regarding Chinese granite stone and the process to make out construction contract documents.

  • Microcracks that consist of quarry planes of granite are an essential factor affecting the long-term behavior of granite. In this paper, fine-grained granite distributed in the Tsukuba area of Japan was selected and microcracks were measured by using scanline method. In addition, a new relaxation testing equipment was developed to carry out stress relaxation test under water-saturated triaxial condition. Based on the relaxation test results with the initial stress level of 75%, the axial stress is decreased by 39%-49% just after the start of the tests, and the totally relaxed stress is 10∼24 MPa in 190 ERT (Elapsed relaxation time, hour). In addition, the relaxed stress is increased with the density of cracks which are parallel to axial load direction.

  • We analyzed the three-dimensional distribution of micropores and internal structures in both fresh and weathered granite using micro-focus X-ray computed tomography (micro-CT). Results show that the pore radius in fresh granite is mostly in the range of $17-50{\mu}m$, the throat radius is in the range of $5-25{\mu}m$, and the coordination number (CN) of pores is less than 10. In contrast, the pore radius in weathered granite is mostly in the range of $20-80{\mu}m$, the throat radius is in the range of $8-30{\mu}m$, and the CN is less than 12. In general, a positive linear relationship exists between pore radius and CN. In addition, both the size and the density of pores increase with an increasing degree of rock weathering. The size of the throats that connect the pores also increases with an increasing degree of weathering, which induces fracture propagation in rocks. Micro-CT is a powerful and versatile approach for investigating the three-dimensional distributions of pores and fracture structures in rocks, and for quantitatively assessing the degree of pore connectivity.
