  • Petrographic and palaeomagnetic studies have been conducted to understand the origin of dark-colored enclaves occurring in the hornblende biotite granite within the Wondong caldera. The enclaves are commonly elongted and rounded in shape. They are finer-grained and darker-colored than enclosing granite, but they have simliar mineral assemblage to that of granite. Under the microscope the enclaves show microstructures reflecting an igneius origin. The microstructures of igneous origin include elongate grain shapes of plagioclase, hornblende, apatite, poikilitic anhedral quartz and zoning of plagiclase. All above features indicate that the enclaves belong to the 'microgranitoid enclaves' of Vernon (1984). a total of 91 orirnted samples were drilled from 4 sites, and their AMS (anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility) axis directions and remance components were analyzed. The result shows thar both enclave and host granite have same AMS priniciple axis direction and same remanence magnetic direction in each site. The result of this study suggests that the anclaves were derived from the globules of magma, which were formed by pillowing of synpltonic dike of magma that is more mafic than the host granite magma.

  • The Anyang Feldspar Mine is located in Seoksu Dong, Anyang City, Kyeonggi Do, Korea and has a long exploitation record that is once produced high grade sodium feldspars, for glaze. Geologically, This area is mainly composed of Mesozoic Jurassic biotite granite (Anyang granite) which intruded Precambrian Kyeonggi Gneiss Complex outcroped near the mining area. The deposit is localized on the southwest hill side of Anyang granite batholith and is confined in hydrothemal alteration zone formed by sodium-rich alkali hydrothermal fluids along the fractures of leucocratic granite showing later differentiation facies in the biotite granite. The hydrothermal alteration is characterized by albitization, sericitization, and desilication. The microscopic observation and EPMA, XRD analysis of the feldspar ores show that major minerals are albite and quartz and accessory minerals are orthoclase and sericite, and they are rarely associated with perthite, fluorite, zircon, kaolinite, molybdenite, microcline and iron-oxide. In the REE pattern, the strong negative Eu anomalies of the feldspar ores indicate the influence of feldspar fractionation and show similiar pattern of the host leucocratic granite. The filling temperature of quartz crystals in ore zone ranges from $276^{\circ}C$ to $342^{\circ}C$, and it is inferred that the alteration occurred by the hypothermal solution.

  • Technetium-99 is identified as an element of interest for the safety assessment of a deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel. The sorption behavior of Tc(IV) onto MX-80 and granite in Ca-Na-Cl solutions of varying ionic strength (0.05-1 mol·kgw-1 (m)) and across a pHm range of 4-9 was studied in this paper. Sorption of Tc(IV) was found to be independent of ionic strength in the range of 0.05 to 1 m for both MX-80 and granite. Sorption of Tc(IV) on MX-80 increased with pHm from 4 to 7 and then decreased with pHm from 8 to 9. Sorption of Tc(IV) on granite gradually increased with pHm from 4 to 8 and then became almost constant or slightly decreased with pHm from 8 to 9. A 2 site protolysis non-electrostatic surface complexation and cation exchange sorption model successfully simulated sorption of Tc(IV) on MX-80 and granite. Optimized values of surface complexation constants (log K0) are proposed.

  • Recently, problems related to vibrations of decomposed granite soils have acquired increasing attention in Korea because those soils cover approximately one third of the country. Both resonant column and cyclic triaxial test were performed to investigate deformation characteristics of unsaturated and cement-mixed decomposed granite soils in Suwon region. The important soil parameters in this respect are the shear moduli, dynamic moduli of elasticity and damping ratios. The dynamic parameters are influenced by variables such as strain amplitude, ratio of loading cycles, and degree of saturations, etc. Test results and data have shown that the optimum degree of saturation to the maximum shear modulus due to a capillary menisci effect was about 17~18 % at low strain amplitude and 10~15 % at intermediate strain amplitude. This paper suggests the range of threshold strain and mean shear modulus of decomposed granite soils in Suwon region. It also proposed the empirical relationship between the dynamic parameters for cement-mixed and non-mixed decomposed granite soils.

  • Decomposed granite soils are in a wide range of conditions depending on the degrees of weathering. This paper is intended to examine laboratory tests such as consolidation tests and conventional triaxial compression tests conducted in order to find out the mechanical properties of Cheongju granite soil. Along with the foregoing, the results of basic physical tests conducted in order to grasp the physical properties of Cheongju granite soil were described and based on the results, methods to calculate the mechanical parameters of numerical approaches using Lade's double surface work-hardening constitutive model were examined. Finally, it is intended to explain the stress properties of Cheongju granite soil used as a geotechnical material based on its shear behavior and critical state concept using the results of isotropic consolidation tests and triaxial compression tests. As a conclusion, it can be seen that in the relationship between confining stress and maximum deviator stress, the slope is maintained at a constant value of 2.95. In the drained CTC test, maximum deviator stress generally existed in a range of axial strain of 6~8% and larger dilatancy phenomena appeared when confining stress was smaller. Finally, based on the results of the CTC tests on Cheongju granite soil, although axial strain, deviator stress and pore water pressure showed mechanical properties similar to those of overconsolidated soil, Cheongju granite soil showed behavior similar to that of normally consolidated soil in terms of volumetric strain.

  • Daegang granite is located around the Namwon-gun, Cheolabuk-do, and is an elongate stock $(80 km^{2})$ in the NNE-SSW direction. Daegang granite has the very same mineralogical and geochemical characteristics as those of the typical A-type granites; (1) it is a one feldspar hypersolvus granite, and is classified as an alkali feldspar granite in the lUGS scheme, (2) has small amounts of Fe-rich biotite (annite) and alkali amphibole (ribeckite) that are late in the crystallization sequence of the granitic magma, (3) always contains opaque oxides, fluorite and zircon, (4) shows high and quite homogeneous $SiO_2$, content (mostly 72~77 wt.%) and $(Na_{2}O+K_{2}O)/Al_{2}O_{3}$ ratio (0.90~0.98), (5) contains high Ga, lOOOO*Ga/Ai, $K_{2}O+Na_{2}O$, $(K_{2}O+Na_{2}O)/CaO$, $K_{2}O/MgO$, FeO/MgO, agpaitic index, Zr, Nb, Ce, Y, Zn value or ratio that resemble to those of the Australian A-type granites (Whalen et al., 1987), and (6) has enriched LREE and HREE that show flat variation pattern with slightly depleted in HREE and profound Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*=0.04~0.l4). In the tectonic discrimination diagrams of Pearce et al. (1984) and Eby (1992), Daegang granite is classified as a within plate granite and $A_{2}-type$.

  • Jecheon granite can be divided into two types; porphyritic granite (K-feldspar megacryst bearing) and medium-grained biotite granite. Porphyritic granite, host body of feldspar deposits, is 8${\sim}$11 km in diameter and about 80 $km^{2}$ in area. It mainly contains K-feldspar, plagioclase, biotite and quartz, and magnetite, zircon, sphene and apatite are accessary minerals. Enclosed minerals in K-feldspar megacryst with 3${\sim}$10 cm in diameter are hornblende, plagioclase, quartz, magnetite, apatite, sphene and zircon. Mafic enclaves mainly consisting of hornblende, plagioclase and quartz are frequently observed in porphrytic granite. Medium-grained biotite granite consists of K-feldspar, plagioclase, biotite and hornblende as main, and hematite, muscovite, apatite and zircon as accessary minerals. Core and rim An contents of plagioclase from porphyritic granite, medium biotite granite, K-feldspar megacryst, and mafic enclave are 36 and 21, 40 and 32, 37 and 32, and 43 and 36, respectively. $X_{Fe}$ values of hornblende are 0.57 at biotite granite, 0.51 at K-feldspar mehacryst and 0.45 at mafic enclave. $X_{Fe}$ values of biotite and hornblende are homogeneous without chemical zonation. K-feldspar megacryst shows end member of pure composition with exsolved thin lamellar pure albites. Characteristics of mineral compositions and petrography indicate porphyritic granite is igneous origin and medium-grained biotite granite comes from the same source of magma; biotite granite is initiated to solidly and from residual melt porphyritic granite can be formed. Possibly K-feldspar megacrysts are formde under H$_{2}$O undersaturation condition and near K-feldspar solidus curve temperature; growth rate is faster than nucleation rate. Mafic enclaves are thought to be mingled mafic magma in felsic magma, which is formed from compositional stratigraphy. Estimated equilibrium temperature and pressure for medium-grained biotite granite are about $800^{\circ}C$ and 4.83${\sim}$5.27 Kb, respectively.

  • This work is to review the granite landforms studies by Korean geographers. It is verified that geomorphlogical characteristics of granite present landscapes characterized by 1) in case of mountains, are difficultly or irregularly weathered, so as to develop rocky forms such as domes, cliffs, and tors ; 2) in case of stream valley that is inter-massif lowland, low relief hills and flood plains with alluvium. All these facts owe to the difference of weathering mode granite properties. The granite hills and alluvial plains of southwestern coastal parts in Korean peninsula is low undulatory and large owing not only to the existence of highly weathered granitic regolith, but also to frequent flooding. Cultivated brownish field, orchard, meadow and forest are located at granite hills. On the other hand paddy rice field at granite alluvial plains. Korean peninsula have endured erodible geomorphlogical processes since Miocene when warping it up. Therefore many intermontane basins are located on the weathered granite areas which are surrounded by mountains composed of much less Precambrian gneiss complex. In fact, intermontane basin is mainly linear fault-line valley. The landforms of the intermontane basins are characterized by gentle piedmont slopes, alluvial fans, fluvial terraces and alluvial plains.

  • The present study is an analysis of the monitoring results of the four areas that underwent the experimental construction of Straw-net+seedspray, Vegetation media spray method(t=2cm), and Vegetation media spray method(t=3cm), with the purpose of selecting the adequate revegetation of cutting slopes in weathered granite soil. Cutting slopes are mostly designed in the Straw-net+seedspray method, but since weathered granite soil slopes tend to have an infertile soil quality that runs down, it is difficult for seed germination and growth. It is difficult to apply Straw-net+seedspray to weathered granite soil slopes considering the germination rate and coverage rate of the Straw-net+seedspray method, which accompanies erosion and scouring. The final conclusions are summarized as follows. First, Straw-net+seedspray has difficulty recruiting plants to infertile weathered granite soil, which results in a lower coverage rate and fewer species, so it is not adequate construction method. Second, Vegetation spraying methods with wet media are more advantageous in early revegetation. The wet construction methods are faster than the dry construction methods in terms of early germination and its early growth are more excellent. Third, when constructing Vegetation spray methods with dry media, it were more advantageous if the thickness was thicker. When the soil-media is thicker, the soil is resilient to droughts, so the thickness must be flexibly applied according to the soil quality and slant of the weathered granite soil slope. The present study is a monitoring result for some areas of Gangwon-do, so its results may differ from other areas.

  • Different ages of the ginsengs were collected from the three soil areas, such as granite, phyllite and shale of Keumsan, with their field soils. Of the soils, phyllite and shale areas are high in the Ni, Cr, Co, Sc, V, As, Cu and Zn contents while the granite areas are low in the W, Pb, Th, U, Sn and Be contents. In the correlation coefficient of the soils, positive and negative relationships of the elements are mainly high in the shale and low in the granite area. Comparing between 2- and 3- year ginsengs, 2-year ginsengs are mainly high in most elements, especially for the granite and phyllite areas. In the regional comparisons among the same ages, the granite areas are mainly low and high in the shale area for the most of the elements. Comparisons among the parts of ginsengs suggest high contents in the most of the elements at the upper parts. In the comparisons between the top soils and ginseng compositions, top soils are mainly high and show similar increase/decrease trends between them. Following the transitional element contents, the granite area is best for the ginseng cultivation while , among the three areas, the shale area is worst.
