  • This paper presents fundamental characteristics of a copper slag when used geotechnical materials. For this study, it was conducted laboratory tests such as compaction, large direct shear, hydraulic conductivity, leaching, TDR, frost heave test and so on. The results of laboratory tests shown gradually increase in draining capacity and shearing resistance more slag mixing. The unfrozen water in temperature changes and frost heave amounts in condition of -17 $^{\circ}C$ appeared to decrease. Also, toxicity tests based on the domestic solid waste regulations were satisfied with nonhazardous. By this research results, a copper slag mixed with granite soil may been used as granular base and embankment materials, fill etc.

  • Gas permeability of the solidified sewage sludge needs to be characterized in order to use as a large-scale landfill cover material. Four different types of the samples were prepared for gas permeability experiments: (1) granite soil, (2) dried sewage sludge, (3) solidified sewage mixed with slag and (4) solidified sewage mixed with granite soils. The experimental instrumentation and measurement devices were newly designed and created to effectively evaluate gas permeability of the samples.

  • This study was for comparisons of transitional element concentrations from the two different soil, serpentinite(SP) and granite area(GR), Kwangcheon and Hongseong area. Soils were collected by soil depths (10, 20 and 30cm) from the sites selected In the plant species(coniferous and deciduous species). In the soils, the SP was high in the Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Zn concentrations, while the GR was high in the Cu, As, Sc and V. With the soil depths, the elements had high solubility, such as Cr, Co and Ni concentrations, were high in the SP, while the other elements were not clear. For the both species, the SP was high in the root and bolebark, while in the GR, not clear. Coniferous species in the same soil types, was higher than the deciduous In most elements. The more with increasing ages, the more with element accumulation in most plant parts except leaves. Comparisons between the soils and plant species, in the case of the element contents within the soils, the plant species in the same sites was similar trend. especially, clear in the SP

  • This paper deal with the stability evaluation and suggestion of progressive failure slope in biotite granite area of Andong. Based on geological site investigation and field test, stability analysis of slope was performed in conjunction with limit equilibrium methods and stereographic projection. Additionally, initial design and construction procedure was critically evaluated. Series of the slope stability analysis reveals the detection of local wedge and plane failure under the current slope condition. It is additionally appeared that a certain synthetic behavior of circle and plane failure exists on the right spot where the overall failure's going in progress. In order to construct more stable slope based on the suitability for the real state of the slope circumstances, this study issues a solution to eliminate the primary factors which cause the instability, by means of the grade of weathering and RMR classification of rock mass.

  • This study dealt with the comparison of lateral baring capacity for vertical PHC pile between predicted and measured values driven in weathered granite soils to build world cup gymnasium in Kwangju area. Recently, the calculation of horizontal bearing capacity of piles foundation has been considered very important for earthquake or wind resistant design in Korea. During this study , Matlock & Reese, Broms and Chang's methods were selected in prediction of lateral resistant of PHC piles. As for case study, the prediction values were compared with 5 measured ones based on ASTM. The result showed that prediction values proposed by Matlock & Reese , Chang and Broms were smaller that real values. Three proposed methods by Matlock & Reese and Chang based on lateral deflection and Broms by ultimated lateral resistance turned out valid in view of engineering practice.

  • Migration experiments of THO and 237Np have performed through a sampled granite core in Chemlab2 probe at the Aspo hard Rock laboratory. The elution curves of THO were analysed to determine hydraulic properties such as the extent of dispersion effect according to flow rates. The retardation phenomena of the solutes were observed and described with elution curves and migration plumes. After migration test, the rock core was opened, and the remaining radioactivities on the rock fracture surfaces were measured. The transport process was simulated with a two-dimensional channel model. The mass transport process was described with three types of basic processes ; advection, sorption and matrix diffusion. By the combination of these processes, effects of each process on transport were described in terms of elution curves and migration plumes. By comparing the simulation results to the experimental one, it was possible to analyse the retardation effect quantitatively.

  • The frost heaving pressure can be a problem for weakening of the railway roadbed material. This study was initiated to investigate the soils frost heaving pressure and physical characteristics(Liquid limit, permeability, SEM analysis) resulting from freezing and freezing-thawing cycle process. Therefore, upon freezing a saturated soil in a closed-system from the top, a considerable pressure was developed. Weathered granite soils, sandy soil were used in the laboratory freezing test which sometimes subjected to thermal gradients under closed-systems. The frost heaving pressure arising within the soil samples and the temperature of the samples inside were monitored with elapsed time. The degree of saturation versus heaving pressure curve is also presented for weathered granite soil and the maximum pressure is closely related to this curve. Based on the laboratory test results, fine-grained soils with strong attractive forces between soil grains md water molecules, and additional water is attracted into the pores leading to further volume changes and ice segregation.

  • Interior stone walls are using commonly in non-bearing lightweight walls of apartments. The stones of interior wall were two types, one is a granite stone, another is a marble stone. Granite stone is attached by the epoxy adhesive and marble stone is attached by dedicated anchor and fastener. The impact resistance test was carried out interior stone walls in accordance with KS F 2613. The test methods included the impact resistance tests by each of soft impact body and hard impact body. The results of the test have proved that interior stone walls can withstand the soft impact bodies and hard impact bodies that are likely to happen in everyday life.
