Synergistic Antibacterial Activity of Fig (Ficus carica) Leaves Extract Against Clinical Isolates of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (병원내에서 분리된 메티실린내성 황색포도상구균에 대한 무화과잎 추출물의 항미생물효과)

  • Fig (Ficus carica L.) belongs to the mulberry tree (Moraceae) which is one of the oldest fruits in the world. It has been used as a digestion promoter and a cure for ulcerative inflammation and eruption in Korea. The present study investigated the antimicrobial activity of methanol (MeOH) extract of fig leaves against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolated in clinic. The MeOH extract (MICs, 2.5 to 20 mg/mL; MBCs, 5 to 20 mg/mL) was demonstrated as antibacterial activity in isolates MRSA 1-20. The administration of the MeOH extract in combination with oxacillin or ampicillin induced a reduction of ${\geq}$4-8-fold in all tested bacteria, which was considered to be synergistic based on a FICI of ${\leq}$0.375-0.5. Furthermore, time-kill study was found that a combination of MeOH extract with oxacillin or ampicillin produced a more rapid decrease in the concentration of bacteria CFU/mL than MeOH extract alone. The results suggest that fig leaves could be employed as a natural antibacterial agent in MRSA infection care products.

  • Bekesy measured the sound transformation system of the middle ear 49 years ago. According to his reports, a ratio between the size of ear drum and the size of oval window is 17 : 1, and the lever function of the ossicles is physiologically 1.3 : 1. Therefore, the hearing might be aggravated to 27.5㏈ in the case of the vanishment of 3 ossicles. In 1952, Wullstein reported 5 types of tympanop-lasty and the fourth type among them was especially named for the sound-protection. The oval window is only exposed by the sound pressure and the round window is not exposed. According to the application by this idea, the post-operative hearing might be improved until 27.5㏈. Mean while, in 1942, Onchi verified through his experiment that the results of Bekesy's measurement was not completely conformed to Onchi result. Bekesy measured the sound pressure on the stapes plate of the oval window, on the other hand, Onchi measured the sound pressure on the surface of the perilymph of the oval window after removing the stapes plate(Fig. 1).(Figure omitted) The difference of their experiment is recognized that the impedance of the stapes plate exists or not (Fig. 1). Both Audiogrums are compared as Fig. 2. The result of IV type of tympanoplasty is success ful in 54% as the Table 1. (Table Omitted) The reason of unsatisfactory is caused by the thick and unmovable window-membrane and by the closing of air passage to the round window. The closing of the air passage to the round window is occurred by the adhesion between the grafting membrane and the surface of promontorium. In order to preserve this adhesion, I produce to transplantate the mucous membrane of the lip to the bone surface of tympanic cavity after removing the granulation tissue of the tympanic cavity and to form a membranous canal for the sake of air passage (Fig. 3). (Figure Omitted) The post-operative hearing by this method is shown as Fig. 4, 5. In other words, the post-operative sound pressure entered into the cochlea directly, by way of the oval window only, not by way of the round window, as a theorie of the sound protection. The Studies on Urobilinogen Determination (Urobilinogen 측정에 관한 연구)

  • We have performed 324 specimens' urobilinogen determinations(Healthy normal 219 & out-or in-patients 105) for the purposs of defining accurate & precise methods in semi-quantitative techniques. As shown on Table 1 through 5 & Fig.1 to 3, normal person's titer is concentrated in 1:40, 1:80, 1:20 & 1:10 respectively and majority of patients' titer is 160. The concentration diagram on Fig. 2 is seen for the normal person and patient's titer is nearly normal distribution scattered from 0.475mg/dl of median throughout the whole area (0.225-0.625). From Fig. 5 I have found that semi-quantitative titer is much different from the true value by electrical measurements. I am proposing of taking photoelectric quantitative methods for semiquantitative methods.

Occurrence of Anthracnose on Indian Fig Cactus Caused by Glomerella cingulata and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides

  • Anthracnose symptoms were frequently found on stems of Indian fig cactus in Cheju island of Korea in 1998 and 1999. Typical symptoms were gray to black dry rot of stems with concentric arrays of dot-like spots. A Glomerella sp. or a Colletotrichum sp. was frequently isolated from the symptoms, both of which were identified as Glomerella cingulata and its anamorph, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides based on their morphological and cultural characteristics. Out of 31 isolates obtained from the symptoms, 12 isolates were the anamorph producing only conidia, four isolates the telemorph producing only ascospores, and 15 isolates the holomorph producing both spores on potato dextrose agar. Stem rots similar to the original anthracnose symptoms were induced by wound inoculation of conidia and ascospores but not by non-wound inoculation. The anamorphic isolates caused more extensive stem rot than the telemorphic and holomorphic ones.

  • Carboxylic phthalocyanine합성물을 분석한 결과 Copc의 Co가 3.06Wt.(%)에서 Cooapc가 0.28Wt.(%)로 나타난 것으로 보아 carboxylic group이 증가한 것을 알 수 있었으머, Fepc도 같은 결과로 나타났다. 휘발성유기화합물의 제거효율을 분석한 결과 극성이 높은 물질은 쉽게 흡착 되었으며 일부 제거가 되지 않은 물질은 Fig.3, Fig.4에서 보는바와 같이 Feoapc보다는 Cooapc가 제거효율이 높은 것으로 나타났다.

  • This is the abstract of the study on the check by static driving nail in Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc., Abies holophylla Maximowicz, and Larix leptolepis Gordon Pinet. which are commercial woods and main forestation species in Korea. The static driving resistance of nail is decresed straightly and the surface and back check's length and width were increased in proportion to increase of the moisture content, but the surface check length and width were over twice as large as the back check, also the check were happened in order of Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc., Abies holophylla Maximowicz., and Larix leptolepis Gordon Pinet. As the driving nail speed was increased, surface check length and width were increased and the back check was over twice as large as the surface check.

A Study on the Development of Basic Brassiere Pattern for Adult Women(Part II)-Focusing on Pattern Grading- (성인여성용 브래지어 원형 개발연구(제2보) -패턴그레이딩을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop grading method of the basic brassiere patterns therewith, provide for 12 size's brassiere patterns and prove fitness of their's and shape. The collected data were statistically processed using the SAS 6.12 for Means, Standard Deviation, etc. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; 1. The basic sizes adopted at the first design stage (see fig.1-2) were 75AA, 75A and 75B each of which was designed as upper foundation basic pattern in reference to the cup size. At the second stage, each of the upper body foundation basic pattern was used to design lower cup, upper up, front panel and wing in their order(see fig.3-6). At the third stage, the other sizes were graded in reference to the three brassiere patterns (75AA, 75A and 75B) to produce 12 brassiere sizes(see Tab. 7-8). In order to develop the basic patterns of adult women's brassieres, 33 women were selected per 11 size combination(3 women per size combination), and then, their brassiere fitting was teated. As a result, the fronts of the basic patterns were found to have such problems as undone front center, poor levelling of upper cup's bottom line or lower cup's top line, poor shape of upper cup's outside top line and shoulder strip position. On the other hand, on the rear side of the basic patterns, the central part of the wing was slightly lifted, while the wing width and straps'interval did not befit the ful1-cup brassiere. The result of this first brassiere fitting test showed that the functionality and aesthetics of the basic pattern brassieres were more or less satisfactory, and thus, the problems were addressed for the second teat. In the second test, the aesthetics, breast-shaping effect and functionality of the basic pattern brassieres were much improved. 2. We were to present the final brassiere sizing system to extend the interior length of breast and the exterior length of breast on the basis of fitting test. Thereby, 75B$.$80A$.$80B$.$85A$.$85B's the interior lengths of breast were enlarged to 0.7cm, the rest size was enlarged to 0.5cm and the exterior length of breast was enlarged to 0.5cm regardless of sizes. 3.
