  • Before other statistical data analysis the preprocessing steps should be performed adequately to have meaningful results. These steps include processes such as baseline correction, normalization, denoising, and multiple alignment. In this paper an algorithm for baseline correction is proposed with using the piecewise cubic Hermite interpolation with block-selected points and local minima after denoising for SELDI or MALDI mass spectrometry data.

  • The present study addresses the open correction associated with the reflection and discharge phenomena of a weak shock wave from an open end of a duct. The open correction of the weak shock wave is investigated experimentally and by numerical computation. An experiment is made using a simple shock tube with an open end. and computaion is performed to simulate the experimental flow field using the unsteady, axisymmetric compressible. flow governing equations. The results obtained show the an open correction should be involved for shock wave discharge and reflection problems generated from the exit of the duct with an open baffle plate. With a baffle plate less than three times the duct diameter, it is found that the open end correction is a function of both the diameter of the baffle plate and normal shock wave magnitude However, for a baffle plate larger than three the duct diameter it is independent of the baffle plate diametre, The present computations predict the results of shock tube experiment with good accuracy. A new empirical equation for prediction of the open correction is found for the weak shock reflection and discharge phenomena occurring at the open of the duct with and without a baffle plate.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the change in pain, Neck Disability Index score, and the craniovertebral angle by performing scapular correction exercise or general neck exercise for five weeks in participants with mechanical neck pain. Methods: A total of 31 participants were randomly assigned between the scapular correction exercise and the general neck exercise groups, and all participants performed intervention for 40 minutes each, three times a week for five weeks The effects were evaluated by measuring the Visual Analog Scale score, the Neck Disability Index score, and the craniovertebral angle, before and after the intervention. Independent t-tests were used to compare differences between two groups, and to compare differences between pre- and post-intervention, paired t-tests were used. Results: As measured before and after the intervention, the scapular correction exercise group showed significant improvement in all variables (p<0.05), while the general neck exercise group improved only in the neck disability index score. The differences between the two groups revealed further improvement in the scapular correction exercise group compared to the general neck exercise group (p<0.05). Conclusion: We found that five weeks of the scapular correction exercise to modify the position and movements of the scapula is clinically an important treatment tool for recovery from chronic mechanical neck pain symptoms and restoration of proper neck function.

  • Atmospheric correction is one of critical procedures to extract quantitative information related to biophysical variables from hyperspectral imagery. Most atmospheric correction algorithms developed for hyperspectral data have been based upon atmospheric radiative transfer (RT) codes, such as MODTRAN. Because of the difficulty in acquisition of atmospheric data at the time of image capture, the complexity of RT model, and large volume of hyperspectral data, atmospheric correction can be very difficult and time-consuming processing. In this study, we attempted to develop an efficient method for the atmospheric correction of EO-1 Hyperion data. This method uses the pre-calculated look-up-table (LUT) for fast and simple processing. The pre-calculated LUT was generated by successive running of MODTRAN model with several input parameters related to solar and sensor geometry, radiometric specification of sensor, and atmospheric condition. Atmospheric water vapour contents image was generated directly from a few absorption bands of Hyperion data themselves and used one of input parameters. This new atmospheric correction method was tested on the Hyperion data acquired on June 3, 2001 over Seoul area. Reflectance spectra of several known targets corresponded with the typical pattern of spectral reflectance on the atmospherically corrected Hyperion image, although further improvement to reduce sensor noise is necessary.

  • Aircraft observations constitute one of the major sources of temperature observations which provide three-dimensional information. But it is well known that the aircraft temperature data have warm bias against sonde observation data, and therefore, the correction of aircraft temperature bias is important to improve the model performance. In this study, the algorithm of the bias correction modified from operational KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) global model is adopted in the preprocessing of aircraft observations, and the effect of the bias correction of aircraft temperature is investigated by conducting the two experiments. The assimilation with the bias correction showed better consistency in the analysis-forecast cycle in terms of the differences between observations (radiosonde and GPSRO (Global Positioning System Radio Occultation)) and 6h forecast. This resulted in an improved forecasting skill level of the mid-level temperature and geopotential height in terms of the root-mean-square error. It was noted that the benefits of the correction of aircraft temperature bias was the upper-level temperature in the midlatitudes, and this affected various parameters (winds, geopotential height) via the model dynamics.
