  • Recently, there have been emerging research activities in classifying the Sasang constitution objectively by machine-based methods. The concordance rate of the classification by the pulse wave features was, however, only around 50% up to now. In this paper, we introduce a novel classification algorithm that can promote the accuracy substantially at the expense of the non-classifiable subgroup as a byproduct. For instance, with the pulse wave features alone, we show that female/male subject group in their 20s can be classified into the Sasang constitution group with the concordance rate of 68.4%/65.5% for a subgroup of 57/29(31%/15%) subjects out of 184/195, by leaving the other subjects as the non-classifiable group. Next, we show that the pulse diagnosis has been used only as a supportive tool in determining one's constitution, and consequently the accuracy of the concordance ratio by the pulse wave features alone cannot exceed a finite value, which we estimate to be about 60%.

  • Purpose: This study was to compare and examine the effects of auricular acupressure therapy on insomnia in the elderly by Sasangin constitution. Methods: This study was designed to compare three groups according to Sasangin constitution (Tae Yin In, So Yang In, and So Yin In) in terms of the changeful effects of auricular acupressure therapy on insomnia in the elderly. The subjects were 81 (Tae Yin In: 28, So Yang In: 26, and So Yin In: 27) persons aged over 65 years who were living in Seoul or Gyunggi Province. Data were collected from May, 2007 to July, 2008, and analyzed by SPSS/WIN 16.0. Results: 1. The effect of auricular acupressure on insomnia in Tae Yin In was higher than that in So Yang In, and its effect in So Yang In was higher than that in So Yin In. 2. The effect was highest after the 4th treatment in Tae Yin In, after the 5th treatment in So Yang In, and after the 6th treatment in So Yin In. Conclusions: The use of auricular acupressure therapy in consideration of individual elders' Sasangin constitution can maximize its effect to relieve insomnia in the elderly.

  • n this study, the BMI characteristics and food preference were examined according to the Sasang constitution typology. The constitution type of the subjects was judged by SCAT2 (SC) and Sasang specialists (SP), and the data were compared with the group (SS) in which the two results coincided. The results of SC and SP were consistent with 55 (38.2%) out of 144 subjects. Among the 55 subjects, there were 36 (65.5%), 15 (27.2%), and 4 (7.3%) Soeumin, Taeeumin, and Soyangin, respectively. The BMI of Taeeumin was significantly higher than that of Soeumin (p< .001) in all analytical methods. On the other hand, there was a difference in determining the body shape of Soyangin between the SCAT2 and specialists. The Taeeum-Soeum Food Preference Index was applied to compare the food preference to 41 types of food. In SS analysis, 13 kinds of foods preferred by Taeeumin or Soeumin were found, of which 8 (19.5%) were consistent with the existing food data. Taeeumin preferred 6 kinds of food, such as cold soybean-soup noodles, wild sesame seaweed soup, pan-fried tofu, Yeongun-jorim, Doraji-namul, and soy milk. In contrast, the favorite foods of Soeumin were black rice and Dak-galbi.

  • Sasang Constitutional Medicine, a branch of traditional Korean medicine, believes that the health of human beings can be promoted by taking advantage of the fact that people have different constitutions. It utilizes the characteristics in human voice to diagnose the constitution of the patients. This study aims at establishing the relationship between Sasang constitutions and their corresponding voice characteristics by investigating source-related variables. Voice recordings of 23 patients from three different constitutions were obtained whose constitutions had been already diagnosed by the experts in the fields. Fundamental frequency related variables (average pitch, maximum/minimum pitch, pitch range), phonation type, speaking tempo were measured and analyzed for each group. The phonation type seemed to be a possible candidate for a successful variable to determine constitution. No statistically significant relationship was manifested between other variables and constitutions. Despite its failure to firmly establish the relationship between voice and constitutions, the current study suggests that future research should include not only source-related variables

  • Object : This study was carried out to investigate the bowel disorders following parkinson's disease. Methods : We studied 2 patients with constipation followed by parkinson's disease. Both were diagnosed as COLONOTONIA - according to 8 Constitution medicine. Case 1 was treated with methods of 8 Constitution therapy and herbal medication(Sopoongsoongee-won). Case 2 was treated with method of 8 Constitution therapy only. Conclusions : After treatment, symptom of constipation were improved in both case.

  • This pilot study aimed to set up a reasonable method for measuring body segments parameters and finding out some useful body segments parameters to diagnose Sasang constitutions. In this study, we have tried to take a secure effort in measuring and diagnosing of Sasang constitutions based on the consensus among Sasang constitution experts. And we also have tried to find out some useful body segments parameters based on the actual data. We measured 9 clinically meaningful body lengths specified by Sasang constitution experts and analyzed these parameters statistically according to each Sasang constitution. We have found that Taeeumin female's ratio of foot length to height was significantly large and Soyangin's ratio was significantly small, but more data are needed to confirm this finding.

  • Ijema's four constitution theory is the result of creative succession which is originated from the "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)", and shaped up as "Sanghanron(傷寒論)", the key of Ijema's theory would be the re-explnation of the Sameum-Samyang pattern identification. therefore, we should recognize that the four constitution theory is related to the Sameum-Samyang identification of "Sanghanron(傷寒論)". And is even on the mutual supporting relation. from this point of view, the "Dong-uisusebowon(東醫壽世保元)" could be valuated as a commentary of "Sanghanron(傷寒論)" which shows us that how to review the Sameum-Samyang identification as the point of characteristic of four constitution theory.

  • Through the survey of related studies for last ten years, it was known that accurate sample data of sasang constitution are the most important condition in sceintific research of sasang constitutional medicine. So we can propose three step for scientific sasang constitution medicine: firstly, the construction of SCIM(Sasang Constitutional Information Bank); secondly, the development of instruments for constitution diagnosis; thirdly, the new diagnosis methods based on the organic definition of sasang constitution.

  • Renewable energy sources are considered to be environment-friendly alternatives those are increasingly introduced in the power systems. Microgrid is one of the systems in which renewable sources have a main role as a energy suppliers. Decision of constitution rates of renewable energy sources is very important for the economical and stable operation of microgird systems. In this paper, we present a method to assess an optimal constitution rate of renewable sources especially of windturbine and photovoltaic systems.
