We investigated two flares in the solar atmosphere that occurred on June 3, 2012 and July 6, 2012 and caused propagation of Moreton and EIT waves. In the June 3 event, we noticed a filament winking which presumably was caused by the wave propagation from the flare. An interesting feature of this event is that there was a reflection of this wave by a coronal hole located alongside the wave propagation, but not all of this wave was transmitted by the coronal hole. Using the running difference method, we calculated the speed of Moreton and EIT waves and we found values of 926 km/s before the reflection and 276 km/s after the reflection (Moreton wave) and 1,127 km/s before the reflection and 46 km/s after the reflection (EIT wave). In the July 6 event, this phenomenon was accompanied by type II and type III solar radio bursts, and we also performed a running difference analysis to find the speed of the Moreton wave, obtaining a value of 988 km/s. The speed derived from the analysis of the solar radio burst was 1,200 km/s, and we assume that this difference was caused by the different nature of the motions in these phenomena, where the solar radio burst was caused by the propagating particles, not waves.
This study suggests a general process of analyzing the mooring and cargo handling limit waves, which is an incident to the new energy port under long wave agitation. To reduce damages of ships and harbor structures due to strong wave responses, it is necessary to predict the change of wave field in the mooring berth to make the proper decision by dock master. The berthing area at a new LNG port in the east coast of Korea in this study is frequently affected by oscillations from waves of 8.5~13s periods in the wintertime. The long period waves give difficulties on port operation by lowering the annual berthing ratio. It needs to find the event waves from the real time offshore wave records, which cause over the mooring limits. For that purpose, the wave records from field measurement and offshore wave buoy were analyzed. From numerical simulation, the response characteristics of long period waves in the berthing area were deduced with or without breakwater expansion plan, analyzing the offshore field wave data collected for two years. Some event wave cases caused over the cargo handling and mooring limits as per the standard Korean port design guideline, and those were used for the decision of port operation by dock master, comparing with the real time offshore wave observations.
Previous evaluations of the safety of the Ulchin Nuclear Power Plant in the event of a tsunami have the shortcoming of uncertainty of the tsunami sources. To address this uncertainty, maximum and minimum wave heights at the intake of Ulchin NPP have been estimated through a parametric study, and then assessment of the safety margin for the intake has been carried out. From the simulation results for the Ulchin NPP site, it can be seen that the coefficient of eddy viscosity considerably affects wave height at the inside of the breakwater. In addition, assessment of the safety margin shows that almost all of the intake water pumps have a safety margin over 2 m, and Ulchin NPP site seems to be safe in the event of a tsunami according to this parametric study, although parts of the CWPs rarely have a margin for the minimum wave height.
This paper presents a new approach for the detection of seismic events using accumulated changes on time-frequency domain and variable threshold. To detect seismic P-wave arrivals with rapidness and accuracy, it is that the changes on the time and the frequency domains are simultaneously used. Their changes are parameters appropriated to reflect characteristics of earthquakes over moderate magnitude(${\geq}$ magnitude 4.0) and microearthquakes. In addition, adaptively controlled threshold values can prevent false P-wave detections due to low SNR. We tested our method on real earthquakes those have various magnitudes. The proposed algorithm gives a good detection performance and it is also comparable to STA/LTA algorithm in computational complexity. Computer simulation results shows that the proposed algorithm is superior to the conventional popular algorithm (STA/LTA) in the seismic P-wave detection.
The event-related potentials are difined as the changes in voltage that occur at paticular time before, during and after something that happens in the physical world or some psychological processes. The possibilities of clinical applications of ERP are considered because the endogenous potentials such as P3 and contingent negative variation(CNV) are determined by the psychological significance of the stimulus. The P3 is a positive wave that occurs when a subject detects an informative task-relevant stimulus. The P3 amplitude and latency are affected by the various factors as subjective probabilites, stimulus meaning and information transmission. It is suggested that P3 wave is associated with the decision making, cognitive or perceptual closure, memory updating and transfer of information to consciousness etc. Although the intracerebral origin of the P3 wave is not known, the P3 may have multiple intracerebral generators. The CNV is a slow potential shift occuring during the foreperiod, between warning and response signals, in a reaction time experiment. It is related to expectancy, preparation etc. The abnormal findings of P3 wave and CNV in various psychiatric disorders are also discussed.
The numerical simulation is performed for the acoustic emission and the wave propagation due to fiber breakage in single fiber composite plates by the finite element transient analysis. The acoustic emission and the following wave motions from a fiber breakage under a static loading is simulated to investigate the applicability of the explicit finite element method and the equivalent volume force model as a simulation tool of wave propagation and a modeling technique of an acoustic emission. For such a simple case of the damage event under static loading, various parameters affecting the wave motion are investigated for reliable simulations of the impact damage event. The high velocity and the small wave length of the acoustic emission require a refined analysis with dense distribution of the finite element and a small time step. In order to fulfill the requirement for capturing the exact wave propagation and to cover the 3-D simulation, we utilize the parallel FE transient analysis code and the parallel computing technology.
Recent observation of the neutron star merger event, GW170817, through both gravitational wave (GW) and electromagnetic wave (EM) observations opened a new way of exploring the universe, namely, multi-messenger astronomy (MMA). One of the keys to the success of MMA is a rapid identification of EM counterpart. We will introduce the strategy for prioritization of GW source host galaxy candidates. Our method relies on recent simulation results regarding plausible properties of GW source host galaxies and the low latency localization map from LIGO/Virgo. We will show the test results for both NS merger and BH merger events using previous events and describe observing strategy with our facilities for GW events during the ongoing LIGO/Virgo O3 run. Finally, we report the result of follow-up observation on, the first neutron star merger event, S190425z, during LIGO/VIrgo O3 run.

By using local earthquake data, the Korean crust model and travel-time tables were determined. The upper crustal earthquakes (Hongsung event and Ssanggyesa event) were considered as auxiliary information, and the lower crustal earthquakes (Uljin event and Pohang event) played an important role in determining model parameters. The possible existence of Low Velocity Layer (LVL) in the upper mantle was suggested by discrepancy in the arrival times of Sariwon earthquake which occurred below Moho discontinuity. Computer program for the determination of the model parameters was developed in order to screened out the optimum parameters by comparing the travel times of observed data with theoretical ones. We found that the discontinuities of Conrad, Moho, and upper and lower boundaries of LVL have their depth of 15, 32, 55 and 75 Km, respectively. The velocities of P-and S-wave in the layers between those discontinities were found to be (1) 5.98, 3.40 Km/sec (2) 6.38, 3.79 Km/sec (3) 7.95, 4.58 Km/sec (4) unknown (5) 8.73, 5.05 Km/sec, respectively from the top layer. Travel-time tables were also computed for the inter-local earthquakes which have their direct wave paths above the LVL.
