The objective of this study was to analyze upper grade elementary students' parental awareness and preference of Korean traditional foods in the Chungnam Area. In a survey of 126 parents, 58% of subjects were interested in Korean traditional foods, but there was no significant difference according to age. About 87% of parents thought that inheritance of knowledge on Korean traditional foods was needed. The reasons for inheritance of knowledge on Korean traditional foods were 'To stick to style of Korean traditional foods' (68.2%), 'Palatable' (21.8%), 'Education for children' (6.4%), and 'Beautiful and fine custom' (3.6%). The awareness point of 'Korean traditional foods are easy for cooking' increased with increasing age (p<0.01). In all age groups, subjects highly recognized that Korean traditional foods are good for health. There were significant correlations between overall preferences for Tteok and Hankwa (r=0.351, p=0.001), Hankwa and Korean traditional drink (r=0.374, p=0.001), and Korean traditional drink and Tteok (r=0.406, p=0.001). As a result, preferences for other items also increased when preference for one of the three traditional foods increased. Therefore, education on Korean traditional foods is necessary in order to satisfy parental preferences.

  • It is rare that the dwelling buildings designated as cultural assets owing to the demands of the rapid-changing times and their residences are conserved as their original shapes, though the extent varies. Meanwhile, there has been a continuous effort to preserve and take over our traditional dwelling culture. Yet, the effects were not tangible because the viewpoints are different between the conservation promoters and related residents-officials-experts and because the conservation method is not decided in advance. Thus, in conserving the traditional dwelling culture containing the history of human life, this study tries to find out the reasonable ways for conserving traditional residence based on the consciousness research of citizens on conserving and utilizing the cultural assets. Furthermore this study also tries to suggest to contemporaries - who should live side by side with the historic cultural assets - what attitude they should have. On the basis of above survey, the objective of this study is said to consist in presenting the directions - what efforts are needed - for the more active and participant conservation.

  • This study aims to establish a strategy for selling kimchi to satisfy the needs and wants of European consumers through survey, FGI, and IDI. All survey participants were Europeans and were selected on the basis of their kimchi awareness. For the quantitative survey, 246 participants 15 years or older were selected; for FGI, 33 participants aged between 20 and 49 were selected; and for IDI, eight chefs were selected. The survey included four steps of 'Awareness-First try-Needs-Future consumption'. The participants got to know kimchi through the Internet; for example, by visiting Korea and Hallyu, and suggested positive comments, including 'fancy' and 'exotic.' While satisfaction with kimchi sharply decreased due to taste and appearance in the first try of kimchi, it is important to provide the best first-try experience. It also showed that important needs for kimchi are 'hot sensation', 'crunchiness' and 'presentation'. They gave a negative answer to combination with traditional cuisines of their own country, but provided positive comments for benchmarking the use of traditional pickled foods. This study suggests that it may be necessary to implement a two-track strategy by the traditional kimchi as a 'strategic product' and localized kimchi as a 'key product'.

  • Magnum Korea, a 2008 exhibit at the Hangaram Art Museum in the Seoul Arts Center, introduced representative images of Korea to commemorate the 60th year of the founding of the nation. Twenty photographers of various backgrounds participated in Magnum Korea. This study focuses on one of the exhibited photographers, the French photographer Bruno Barbey. Born in Morocco, Barbey occupies a special position in today's modern photography not to mention in the Magnum group of traditional medium of photography. His photographic world is affiliated with the humanism of Robert Diosneau, particularly as his photographic medium is based on communication and code. Among the photographs in the Magnum Korea collection, Barbey's photographs can be organized into six different subjects: industrial structures in nature, industrial buildings, traditional relics of culture, terminals, markets and restaurants, and daily life. This paper takes special interest in Barbey's unique perspective on Korea's traditional cultural assets focusing on 'Seoul, Jogyesa'. What is the uniqueness of our culture as contained in Barbey's works? In other words, how did he capture the special characteristics of our culture that are often overlooked or ignored because they are so familiar to us? A semiotic approach is used to discover what common but special situations and realities of Korea attracted this photographer and how he managed to capture them in his photographs.

Especially students in urban area emphasized cooking process, and students in rural area emphasized tastes. Many students(80%) answered that the households may play the most important role in succeeding and developing Korean traditional food. Most of students(82.5%) thought that the Korean traditional food needs to be made fast food because they need to take it more easily. However, hygiene, taste and nutrition have to be considered.
