  • The development of hydrogen vehicles has been actively progressed in the developed countries such as U. S., Japan and Germany. The most important technology of using hydrogen fuel is to develope a compatible storage tank with respect to the fossil fuel tank. Among many storage methods, the liquid hydrogen is the most desirable state because of the lowest volume and weight. The metal hydride tank is too heavy and the compressed hydrogen tank is too bulky. Because of these reasons, it is the principal purpose to analyze the theoretical heat transfer for designing and manufacturing an actual $LH_2$ tank. The insulation methods of the room between inner and outer vessel are non-vacuum, vacuum, vacuum with MLI(Multi-Layer Insulation). According to the results of the numerically calculated heat leak through the walls of the $LH_2$ tank, the vacuum insulated tank has 20 times and the MLI tank has 5616 times less heat leak than the non-vacuum tank.

  • The objectives of this study were to develop the optimal structures of recirculating aquaculture tank for improving the removal efficiency of solid materials and maintaining water quality conditions. Flow analysis was performed using the CFD (computational fluid dynamics) method to understand the hydrodynamic characteristics of the circular tank according to the angle of inclination in the tank bottom (0°, 1.5° and 3°), circulating water inflow method (underwater, horizontal nozzle, vertical nozzle and combination nozzle) and the number of inlets. As the angle in tank bottom increased, the vortex inside the tank decreased, resulting in a constant flow. In the case of the vertical nozzle type, the eddy flow in the tank was greatly improved. The vertical nozzle type showed excellent flow such as constant flow velocity distribution and uniform streamline. The combination nozzle type also showed an internal spiral flow, but the vortex reduction effect was less than the vertical nozzle type. As the number of inlets in the tank increased, problems such as speed reduction were compensated, resulting in uniform fluid flow.

  • In the secondary settling tanks, three different types of settling phenomena occurs; i.e., zone settling for sludge thickening in the bottom part of settling tank, and discrete and flocculent settling for clarification in the upper part. In this paper, morphological parameters of the floc in sludge blanket layers along the length of a long rectangular tank were investigated. The plant used for this study had a serious bulking problem caused by Microthrix parvicella. Floc size decreased as the surface area of settling tank increases, which indicates that in the secondary settling tank where zone settling believed to be predominant, free or flocculent type of settling contributes to floc size distributions. Large floc particles deposit in the front zone of settling tank, but small and loose flocs mostly in the zone near its outlet. On the other hand, filament length contained in one gram of sludge blanket solid increases along the flow direction. Large flocs with less filaments settle faster, but small flocs having more filaments result in poor settling. These results support function of microorganism selection occurring in secondary settling tank. In addition, designing a long rectangluar settling tank with double hoppers might be one of the ways of bulking control, but this idea has to be verified with a further study.

  • The leakage of hazardous materials due to the defect in storage tank foundations is likely to cause tremendous fire disasters in the industry cluster area. Thus, adequate design and construction of the tank foundation is required for preventing tank leakage. In this study, four types of typical tank foundations were classified and modeled for 3D FEM analysis to perform stability evaluation on tank foundations. Furthermore, numerical analysis indicated that stress concentration just below the tank shells is 40 times that at the tank center. The settlement influence zone is about the tank radius and tank diameter in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. Thus, the appropriate guidelines for the design and construction of tank foundations were suggested via a comparison assessment of the numerical analysis results on the stress distribution and displacement of the tank foundations.

  • It uses a tank to store, purify and feed lube oil in power plants, which is made by steel plate. Several pumps to feed lube oil are installed on the top plate of the oil tank. In this case if pumps on the top plate are removed or added, the dynamic characteristics of the structure will be changed. In this paper, we present that we analyze in detail the similar case with a finite element model for tank & pump structure coupled with oil and that we set plan to change mode shapes on the top plate of the tank.

  • The signal patterns of slosh noise produced by the fuel tank of a passenger vehicle are characterized by analyzing vehicle interior noise, fuel tank vibration, and near-field noise radiated from the fuel tank. This paper also shows the noise transfer path analysis results performed from the fuel tank to the vehicle inside. On top of them, physical index is described, demonstrating a good correlation with subjective feeling of slosh noise. It is essential to identify the main noise transfer paths for redesigning of the fuel tank system aiming at reducing slosh noise and also helpful to apply physical index in evaluating and reducing this noise. It is found that structure-borne path is the main root of slosh noise and a value reveals a good correlation with subjective feeling.

  • Advanced military nations have developed anti-tank smart munitions to maximize the effectiveness of the tank combat. In this paper we introduced new munition models (KSTAM) for arrack on the top of the tank and analyzed those operation research. To understand the adaptation to the future tank munition we have performed a trade-off study using the proposed models for smart tank munitions which have been developed or are being developed in advanced nations.

  • Hydroelastic effects on sloshing phenomena in a rectangular tank are numerically investigated. The dimension of the tank is $1000mm{\times}600mm$, and the filling ratio of water is 20% of tank height. One of the side walls of tank is assumed to be flexible. The tank is excited into sway motion with amplitude of 100mm and frequency of 0.53Hz that is first natural frequency of water inside the tank. Prediction results for time histories of pressure and displacement of flexible and rigid walls are compared to quantitatively assess hydroelastic effects on sloshing phenomena.

  • High pressure gas is a widely used storage mode for hydrogen fuel. A typical hydrogen tank that is charged with hydrogen gas can function as a hydrogen supply source in a large number of applications. The filling process of a high-pressure hydrogen tank should be reasonably short. However, when the fill time is short, the maximum temperature in the tank increases. Therefore the process should be designed in such a way to avoid high temperatures in the tank because of safety reasons. The paper simulates the fast filling process of hydrogen tanks using Computational Fluid Dynamics method. The local temperature distribution in the tank is obtained. Results obtained are compared with available experimental data. Further work is going on to improve the accuracy of the calculations.

  • A fuel tank of a vehicle is an important part due to its flammable contents ant its importance during crash conditions. Therefore, the fuel tank's design should be assessed for durability and robustness to ensure safety during the early development phase. Previously, evaluation for the durability was done by testing in physical driving conditions which could only be done after the completion of the vehicle. Computation simulation is a more effective method to evaluate the strength and durability of the fuel tank during the early stage. In this paper, two outstanding computational simulation methods are studied. One evaluates PV cycle fatigue due to build up pressure in the fuel tank and the other evaluates the PSD vibration fatigue from modal characteristics. The results show that computational methods agree with physical tests and are thus suitable to analyze the strength and durability of the fuel tank at early development phase.
