Through excavation on Anapji Pond from March 1975 to December 1976, it was discovered that the whole area around Anapji Pond had been called East Palace (東宮) since 7th century and that the original name of East Palace was Wolji Palace (月池宮) through excavation in 1980. The excavation proved that the original name of Anapji Pond was 'Wolji.' In academic world, there are many scholars who recognize this place as the Crown Prince's palace for being called East Palace. East Palace (which is read Dong Palace with pronunciation in Korean alphabet) actually is another name for Crown Prince's palace. This place, however, cannot have served as Crown Prince's palace as 'independent, exclusive space.' After 7th century, there were detached palaces in Silla including East Palace South Palace North Palace and Yang Palace other than Jeong Palace in Wolseong. East Palace is a palace located in the east. The palace's name is based on bearing and it does not indicate Crown Prince's palace. This article proves that East Palace cannot have been Crown Prince's palace through newly analyzing materials related to Wolji Palace.
This study examines the transitional situation that can be seen from the palace operation in early Joseon Dynasty. The first decades of Joseon after the nation was founded differ from the Joseon Dynasty as a whole, but rather similar with the Goryeo Dynasty. By examining "The History of Goryeo(高麗史)," it showed that palace operation during the Goryeo Dynasy was marked by the fact that a separate palace was built and resided in despite the existence of the Bongweol(本闕, main palace) as the central palace. The separation of the parent's generation and the children's generation was shown through the establishment of one's own palace. Such trait of Goryeo affected palace construction directly after the founding of Joseon. This can be shown from the characteristic of palace operation by generation. The construction of the Changdeokgung Palace(昌德宮) of King Taejong, as his own palace, is an example. Afterwards, the palace system of Joseon was established, and the space of the king and the crown prince was merged through ritual reform during the reign of King Sejong. However, the space for the parents of the king were considered separate, and this influence continued to the reign of King Seongjong. The construction of Changgyeonggung Palace(昌慶宮) during the reign of King Seongjong is an event where the king proclaimed the separation with his mother and grandmother.
The purpose of this study is to review the research on Gangbang Palace and to presume the location of the palace through the study of feng shui. when the Mongols invaded, Ganghwado was the capital, moved from Gaegyeong and it was maintained for 39 years. At that time, the palace construction followed the palace of Gaegyeong, and the names such as Gujeong毬庭, Palace, and Sasa寺社 were the same as those of Gaegyeong. However, despite several archaeological excavations at Goryeo Palace Site, Historic Site No. 133, no actual remains of the Goryeo period were found. After the negative opinions on the current Goryeo Palace site became public, there have been several previous studies on the estimation of the location of the Goryeo Palace Site, and although there have been achievements, the location of the Goryeo Palace is still not confirmed. The key to presuming the location of the GangdoPalace江都宮闕 is first, whether the palace was located in the south of Songaksan, and second, at what point it was located in the south of Songaksan. As to whether the palace was located in the south of Songaksan, it was presumed that the Chiso治所 of Ganghwabu was located in Gukhwari, referring to the record in 『Shinjeungdongguknyeojiseungnam新增東國輿地勝覽』 that Goryeosan, a guardian mountain鎭山, was 'five ri west of Bu府西五里'. Accordingly, the location of the palace of 'Budongsimni 府東十里' in the old literature was estimated to be south of Songaksan Mountain. Also, the location of the palace on the south side of Songaksan was approached from a feng shui theory. Three places for the palace to be located are presumed to be 'Ganghwa Girls' High School', 'Seonggwang Church', or 'Above the Ganghwa-gun library', and the central axis of the palace is estimated to be 'Above the Ganghwa-gun library' where the corridor-type building relics were found among them, and the other two areas were presumed to be other buildings within the palace.
Many Korean palaces such as Deoksu Palace and Kyungbok Palace are located in downtown Seoul. Modern high-rise buildings around the palace have been the background scenery of traditional architecture in it. In this case, such landscapes mixed with traditional images and contemporary images can give a negative impression to visitors watching from inside the palace. In this study, we analysed the correlation between landscape image of Deoksu Palace and trees' view blockage of buildings around it with three independent variables. The first variable is completely blocked view of buildings around the palace by the trees. The second variable is half-blocked view of buildings around the palace by the trees. The third variable is the view of buildings around the palace that is not blocked by the trees. The analysis showed that there were some significant correlations between landscape image of Deoksu Palace and trees' view blockage of buildings around it. It also showed that the view blockage ratio by the trees has positive correlation with improvement of landscape image of the palace.
This study attempted to clarify the modern transition process of the urban space through the construction and change of the Imperial Palace as a central facility in Seoul. The road renovation of Seoul, which started in 1895, has established a modern, circular transportation system centered on Gyeongun-gung Palace, the Imperial Palace along with the tram line. In this urban structure, the imperial palace as a central facility of the former monarchy, unlike the previous palaces, could not be located at the top of a road with a longitudinal axis, and it expanded its territory around foreign legionaries and placed a new government office around the perimeter. However, the royal palace was moved to Changdeokgung Palace in 1907 with the throne of Sunjong. With the creation of Changdeokgung, which is the periphery of Seoul, as new royal palace, the status of the imperial palace in the city was remarkably weakened, and Gyeongun-gung, located in the center of Seoul, was also reduced to the current Deoksugung area, turning into an urban facility facing a modern street.

It has been general view to Josun palace space that the Kyongbok palace, a main palace, is arranged with symmetric geometrical composition principles and, unlikely main palace, sub-palaces such as Changduk, Changkyong and Kyonghee palace are placed in organic structure adapted to natural land form. With that view, there are no common factors to be considered between these palace, main and sub palace, in composting principles of the space. In this study, because of same ideological period, although there is external difference of that palaces, that common ideological principles are projected to these two palaces types through compositing space is assumed. On this hypostasis, this study has been focused on finding the ideological principles projected to these palace space commonly. As result of study, some of them are considered as common principles; Firstly, they are arranged in the text of contents through the way of naming to building, enterence and so on. The second point is ; it is viewed that the Oheung and symmetric arrangement method based on Oheung are used in compositing of palace space. The third is ; through analizing central space of Kyongbok palace, it is analized that oneness composition principles, which are based on the theory of Umyangheong, are projected to different palace space commonly.
The Gyeongbok Palace was completed during the reign of King Taejo and King Sejong in the early Joseon Dynasty. The most remarkable spacious feature of the palace is that it has an inner palace wall without an outer palace wall. The absence of the outer palace wall had its origin in the palace of the late Goryeo Dynasty which did not provide the outer palace wall. Gwanghwamoon was the main gate of the palace, and the office buildings of the Six Ministries were arranged on the right side in front of the main gate. A wide road called Six Ministries Avenue was made between the builidings. The avenue was completed during the reign of the third king of Joseon, Taejong, and it was assumed that this arrangement was influenced by the government office arrangements of Nanjing, the early capital city of the Ming Dynasty. Gwanghwamoon held national rituals as well as the civic and military state examinations nations in front of the gate. The avenue was decorated with flowers and silks when kings and the royal families, or Chinese envoys enter the gate, and the civilians watched the parade, Because there was no outer palace wall, all the events held at Gwanghwamoon and the Six Ministries Avenue ware opened to the public, it was the unique feature of Gyeongbok Palace that the palaces of Goryeo dynasty and China did not have.
Gyeonghuigung palace is an important site as it was the secondary palace in Hanyang from the $17^{th}$ century to the mid-$19^{th}$ century. Its original state was lost because a number of buildings were damaged and the palace area was reduced. The entire palace can be seen only in "Seogwoldoan" a drawing of the western palace. With "Seogwoldoan" to show the complete configuration of Gyeonghuigung palace in detail as the main data and other relevant data used as supplementary sources, the aim of this work was to identify the figurative features around the plantings and the space configuration of the royal garden in Gyeonghuigung palace. The space configuration observed in the royal gardens in Gyeonghuigung palace deviated from the norms and strict systems of royal palaces. The free and uninhibited configuration of the royal garden was allowed in Gyeonghuigung palace because it was built as a secondary palace in a lower hierarchy. Furthermore, a royal garden characterized by unique and unlimited planting was created, with several spaces acting as both royal garden and rear garden as the rear gardens could not be separately configured due to the narrow space of Gyeonghuigung palace.
This study is about the Changdeokgung Palace and detached palaces of architect Park Jacheong who was a representative supervisor having framed the palace architecture of the Joseon Dynasty. The results are as follows. First, Park Jacheong had been in charge of Changdeokgung Palace for 15 years since its founding. The palace was continued to run for the longest time and was the palace on the frame made by him for the years, so Changdeokgung Palace's status has become as good as Gyeongbokgung Palace's. Second, he built a lot of palaces besides Changdeokgung. They were completed about the same time in accordance with the political intentions of King Taejong. Park Jacheong was a former military officer and was well skilled in mobilization of manpower and materials by making good use of the military power. Third, the detached palaces constructed by him were located in the places where military training and testing of new weapons were possible. They were also used as sleeping, dining and office spaces. This can be regarded as a result of the tradition of the storied-pavilion that had been since the Goryeo Dynasty, with the method of approaching to the main hall of the palace.
The Kyeongbok Palace was completely renewed during the reign of King Sejong, the fourth King of the Joseon Dynasty(1392-1910). The repair was done for the two main purpose; one was to obtain the dignity of the main palace of the dynasty, the other was to make the palace suitable for the performing of the various ritual ceremonies. It was under the reign of King Sejong that every detail of the procedure of the royal ritual ceremony. The procedure of ritual ceremony changed the buildings of the palace. The quarter of Sajeong-jeon, King's office, was changed remarkably from the original form as the building became the beginning and ending point of King's moving during the ritual ceremonies. The site of the palace had ill reputation from the point of geomancy since its establishment. King Sejong ignored the rumor and kept the palace as usual. In his later year's, Sejong had tried to build a detached quarter and a Buddhist shrine in the palace. But he had to give up his plan because of the retainer's strong opposition. The original layout of the Kyeongbok Palace could be remained as the King renounced his controversial personal wish. King Sejong deserves a full credit for the establishment of the Kyeongbok Palace as the main palace of the Joseon Dynasty.
