  • Objectives: This survey was done in order to find out how Korean medical doctors derive pattern identification for acupuncture prescriptions in treating low back pain in real clinical practice. Methods : The survey questionnaire was developed by the committee of experts who major in acupuncture & moxibustion or statistics for acupuncture clinical trial protocol development. The questionnaires were distributed via e-mail to 75 members of Korean Acupuncture & moxibustion society from March 26th to April 14th in 2009. 57 members completed answers, and the computerized data were analyzed by SPSS 17.0 statistical program. Results : 1.57 Korean medical doctors selected meridian pattern identification based on the course of the meridians(44.6%), visceral pattern identification(32.1%), pattern identification based on cause of disease(14.3%) as the most commonly used pattern identification methods for acupuncture prescription when treating low back pain patients in real clinical practice. 2. In meridian pattern identification based on the course of the meridians, gallbladder meridian of hypochondriac region(13.0%), bladder meridian of lateral low back region(11.2%), governer vessel of central low back region(11.7%) were selected 3. In visceral pattern identification, yang deficiency of kidney(20.2%), deficiency of kidney(19.3%), liver(16.7%), yin deficiency of kidney(14.0%), violence qi of kidney(8.8%), small intestine(7.9%) were selected. Conclusions : In our e-mail survey, Korean medical doctors answered that Meridian Pattern Identification based on the course of the meridians is the most often used diagnosis method. Visceral pattern identification, pattern identification based on cause of disease, meridian pattern identification based on symptom and pattern identification based on qi-blood-yin-yang theory in order of frequency used, were selected for low back pain diagnosis in real clinical practice.

  • Objective: Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has emerged as an important optical imaging modality in non-invasive medical diagnostics. Hence, the aim of this study is to measure the similarity of the diagnosis by a traditional method using doctor's hand for feeling of pulse and by the non-contact/non-invasive pulse analyzing system using OCT on Chon(寸), Kwan(關), Chuk(尺). Method: Four korean medical doctors and the non-contact/non-invasive pulse analyzing system using OCT have measured the rapidity, the dimension, and the power of pulse waves of 25 volunteers. First, four korean medical doctors measured pulse waves of volunteers. During measuring, four doctors were separated from each other and so were volunteers. And then, the pulse waves of volunteers were measured by OCT. This was performed on the right Chon(寸), Kwan(關), Chuk(尺). Results: The study showed that the traditional method and the OCT based method had the 88% matches on the values of the slow and rapid pulse condition (遲數), 64% matches on the values of the small and big pulse condition(微細弱緩大[洪]), and 72% matches on the values of the weak and strong pulse condition(虛實). Conclusions: Based on the high similarities of the measurements of two approaches, we suggest that the OCT based pulse diagnosis method is useful for compensating the traditional method for the pulse diagnosis.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of attitude toward the oriental medicine for 10 years. Methods : A questionnaire was done about general characteristic of patient, the decision-maker of use and the reason of choice or alteration for oriental medicine hospital. Results : The results of this survey are as follows: For 10 years, sex ratio of outpatients is similar, but age distribution is even at all ages. The choice for oriental medicine is more determined by oneself than by others. The recommenders are more variable increasingly. The most common cause of moving from western medicine is to get the more effective treatment. The more the concomitant users are increasing, the more the patients that did not give notice to the western doctor about the dual therapies is increasing, also. The most frequent reason without a notice is "being afraid of western doctor's bias". Conclusions : The appropriate transfer system between oriental and western clinic must be constructed and the proper recognition about dual therapies will be needed among patients and especially dual doctors.

  • Objectives : Based on a national sample survey, we present an analysis of the current situation in the use of moxibustion therapeutics by qualified medical practitioners in Korea. Methods : The survey population of 11,737 hospitals is stratified by administrative regions, and 331 of them are randomly selected from the list of hospitals. The same number of Korean medical doctors is interviewed under the computer-assisted telephone interviewing(CATI) system. The bound on the error of estimation is ${\pm}\;5.0%$ point. Results : Of the 331 Korean medical doctors surveyed, 69% have used moxibustion therapy for remedial treatment. About half of those doctors have employed the therapy for their patients over 30%. The average number of acupuncture points per treatment using the therapy mostly ranges 1 between 5. The percent of practitioners, who have the number of average minutes less than 20 in treatment, is 74%. The number of practitioners who primarily use modified moxibustion is 4 times as many as that of those using traditional moxibustion. Conclusions : Considering the survey results, if the laser heater, alternative to conventional moxibustion, which not only gives high thermal effect but also reduces both the users inconvenience and side effects, are developed, it may benefit more patients as well as Korean medical doctors.

Western OB&GY doctors had recommended to operate or observe. But they refused the way western doctors cure the disease. Their chief complainment was severe pain during menstruation period. And they had lower abdominal or lower back pain and acnes on skin. We used Gami-sibjeon-tang on both patients with acupuncture and moxa. Results: After treated by Gami-sibjeon-tang with acupuncture and moxa, they experienced improvement of dysmenorrhea and pain of abdomen and back, and reduction of acnes on skin. And even the sizes of endometrioma had reduced or eliminated. Conclusion: We thought the dysmenorrhea of endometrioma was concerned with inflammation and adhension. So Gami-sibjeon-tang was used when the inflammation and adhension didn't healed because of deficiency of Qi and blood. We administerd Gami-sibjeon-tang with acupuncture and moxa and their dysmenorrhea and other symptoms was relieved.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this survey was to investigate the need for new medical devices based on opinions of members of the Korean medical society. Methods: We distributed two independent questionnaires sequentially over two-week intervals to 16,510 doctors via the Korean Medical Society, and received replies from 888 and 928 doctors, respectively. The survey was carried out through a web-based questionnaire system. The first questionnaire focused on demand for new diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices that are specific for Korean medicine (KM). In contrast, the second questionnaire focused on demand for new hybrid medical devices which are useful both in Western medicine (WM) and KM. Results: In purchase intention of Korean medical devices (KMDs), demand for diagnostic devices was greater than for therapeutic ones. Among diagnostic devices, the purchase intention of 'imaging devices' ranked the highest and was followed by 'musculoskeletal diagnostic devices'. Among therapeutic KMDs, the purchase intention of 'musculoskeletal treatment devices' ranked the highest, followed by 'cranial nerve rehabilitation devices'. In the purchase intention of hybrid medical devices that can be used both in WM and KM, 'ultrasonic-based medical device' ranked the highest, followed by 'MRI-based medical device'. Conclusions: There is increasing demand for clinically useful medical devices among Korean medical doctors. Within demand for new devices, hybrid devices that can be used in both WM and KM were most strongly desired. This survey will be useful in establishing strategic plans for the development of medical devices in KM. Keywords: Korean medicine, medical device, demand survey, questionnaire.
