The purpose of this study is to propose the expansion of headings for digital trends of Korean Decimal Classification. In order to achieve the purpose, this study first analyzed the change process of classification items related to digital resources in DDC and KDC. Second, subject names related to digital in LCSH and Korean National Library Subject Heading were analyzed. Third, comparisons between the items related to digital of DDC 23rd with LCSH and KDC with Korean National Library Subject Heading were conducted. The result of comparative analysis was identified that KDC 6th edition faces with difficulties in reasonable classification because item names related to digital of KDC 6th edition have 11 items. Therefore, the item related to digital has to be expanded to new classification item name and has to add include notes and class here notes in KDC.

In this research, the first the characteristics of community-oriented vocabulary are investigated with preceding researches which are ULIS-DL and Digital Okayama Dai-Hyakka(DODH). The second this paper proposes a few mapping schemes to connect community directories and compares them by applying them to the resource directories of three local governments Tokyo and Hokkaido in Japan and Chungcheongnam-do in Korea. The mapping schemes use National Diet Library Subject Heading(NDLSH) and/or Nippon Decimal Classification(NDC) as a switching language. Evaluation of the proposed schemes shows their advantages and limitations.

Based on the analysis of historical backgrounds and terms of Taekwondo, this study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of cataloging records related to Taekwondo in 53 national libraries of each country. The results are as follows. To begin with, while most of the Taekwondo-related records are concentrated in some specific national libraries such as the United States, Germany, Republic of China, United Kingdom, and Spain, there are four libraries that do not have one. Second, the title keyword of Taekwondo-related records was 93.5% for the term that directly meant Taekwondo and 6.5% for Korean martial art, Korean art of self-defense, and Korean karate etc. The frequency of materials by language is 38.7% for English and 8~9% for German, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean, respectively. The Roman translation for Taekwondo is 50.3% for 'Taekwondo', and 18.5% for 'Tae kwon do'. Third, the subject heading of Taekwondo-related records was 86.9% for 'Tae kwon do' or 'Taekwondo' etc. 7.6% for 'karate', 5.7% for general subject heading, and 12.0% for blank. This means that some national libraries misunderstand Taekwondo as karate.

The purposes of this study are to examine the various methods of subject access in the rapidly changing environment and to suggest the future of subject access in National Library of Korea (NLK). First of all, current status and problems of Library of Congress Subject Headings List as an representative subject headings in the world and the ways of improving effectiveness of subject retrieval were dealt with. As the ways of improving subject access, social bookmarking, folksonomy, tagging, facet applications, automatic assignment of keyword, thesauri, classification system, and auto-assigned search box were suggested. Finally, current status of NLK subject headings and the ways of improving for utilization of the subject headings as subject access were provided.

Based on the analysis of the appellation from a historical perspective and the diversity of the notation East Sea, this study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of cataloging records related to East Sea in 54 national libraries of the each country. The results are as follows. To begin with, while most of the East Sea-related records are concentrated in some specific national libraries such as the United States, Russia, and the Japan, there are five libraries that do not have one. Second, the title keyword of East Sea-related records was 67.9% for 'Sea of Japan', 29.6% for 'East Sea', and 2.5% for these terms shown together in the national libraries of each country. Third, the subject heading of East Sea-related records was 86.9% for 'Sea of Japan' or 'Sea of Japan(geographic name)', 1.2% for 'East Sea', and 11.9% for general subject heading or blank.

The results are as follows. To begin with, while most of the Dokdo-related records are concentrated in some specific national libraries such as the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom, there are five libraries that do not have one. Second, the title keyword of Dokdo-related records was 76.1% for 'Dokdo', 17.6% for 'Takeshima', 0.4% for 'Liancourt Rock', and 5.9% for these terms shown together in the national libraries of each country. Third, the subject heading of Dokdo-related records was 54.9% for 'Tok Island (Korea)' or 'Dokdo', 11.2% for 'Takeshima (Japan)' or 'Takeshima', less than 1% for 'Liancourt Rock' and 'Dokdo/Takeshima' each, and 33% for general subject heading or blank.

This study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of records related to Korea shown in the cataloging records of national libraries of the main 12 developing countries in Europe and South America. The results are as follows. To begin with, Korea-related records in most national libraries are very poor and under 0.01% of the library. Second, Korean materials usually write Korean in Roman characters except for National Library of Armenia, but there are not marked with the original Korean language and unfeasible Hangeul search. Third, on investigation of the subject distribution in sub criteria of Korea-related records, subject related to history, politics, and economy is largely shown in the highest rate. Fifth, among the Korea-related subject heading, Taekwondo is marked with distinction from Karate in most libraries except for National Library of Argentina. Dokdo is marked with the geographical name of 'Korea' in 8 national libraries and East Sea (Donghae) already is marked with 'Sea of Japan' in 7 national libraries. Amnokgang, Dumangang, and Baekdusan-related records did not search at all in most national libraries.

This study aims to suggest several improvement strategies for the access and retrieval system of National Library of Korea Subject Headings (NLKSH). For this purpose, first of all, the access and retrieval systems in five selected subject headings were examined. Second, focus group interviews and system analysis were conducted to reveal the current condition and suggest the future development strategies. Third, IFLA's Guidelines for Subject Access in National Bibliographies and FAST application cases were analyzed to suggest implications on the improvement strategies. Upon these analysis, recommendations for improving access and retrieval systems of the NLKSH were proposed in four areas as follows: functionalities, interfaces, queries, and other front-end features.

This paper suggests a way to improve Korean diaspora-related subject headings based on the analysis of terminology about Koreans in Korean diaspora-related manuscripts and investigation of related terms in the National Library of Korea subject headings. After selecting three KCI journals with high ratios of diaspora-related papers, the study extracted Korean-related terminology from the journal papers and examined their term frequencies. Additional Korean-related terms were investigated by manually reviewing the articles in which extracted terms appear. Based on these analyses, the study proposes several supplemental enhancements to Korean-related topic names in the National Library of Korea's subject headings, such as changing the English notation, adding non-preferred words, and changing the hierarchical relationship of the existing topic names.
