This special issue introduces recent researches on KOMPSAT(KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite) image processing and applications. In this paper, the status of KOMPSAT development and national satellite image application policy are introduced and the implications of the papers presented in the special issue are discussed. Satellite image resources and application policy that can be utilized through continuous satellite development are considered to be systematically prepared. Therefore, if data processing and application technology development for various fields such as forest and urban change detection, image correction technology introduced in this paper are continuously carried out, it is expected that the competitiveness of national satellite image will be further strengthened.
In order to produce crop information using remote sensing, we use classification and growth monitoring based on crop phenology. Therefore, time-series satellite images with a short period are required. However, there are limitations to acquiring time-series satellite data, so it is necessary to use fusion with other earth observation satellites. Before fusion of various satellite image data, it is necessary to overcome the inherent difference in radiometric characteristics of satellites. This study performed Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-3 (KOMPSAT-3) cross calibration with Landsat-8 as the first step for fusion. Top of Atmosphere (TOA) Reflectance was compared by applying Spectral Band Adjustment Factor (SBAF) to each satellite using hyperspectral sensor band aggregation. As a result of cross calibration, KOMPSAT-3 and Landsat-8 satellites showed a difference in reflectance of less than 4% in Blue, Green, and Red bands, and 6% in NIR bands. KOMPSAT-3, without on-board calibrator, idicate lower radiometric stability compared to ladnsat-8. In the future, efforts are needed to produce normalized reflectance data through BRDF (Bidirectional reflectance distribution function) correction and SBAF application for spectral characteristics of agricultural land.
Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) uses software-controlled unregulated bus system In which the main bus is directly connected to a battery and the duty-ratio for PWM switch is generated by the on-board satellite software algorithm. In this paper, we propose a new power-stage circuit that can be available for modularization of a solar array regulator(SAR) which is used in the KOMPSAT. The operations at each mode and current sharing characteristics of the power-stage are analyzed and verified by simulation and experiments on a prototype converter.
The purpose of this study is to examine the imagebased atmospheric correction models using the data from Landsat Enhanced Thermal Mapper Plus (ETM+) that have quite similar spectral characteristics to the forthcoming Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT)-2 Multi-Spectral Camera (MSC), and the in-situ measured surface reflectance data during satellite overflight. The main advantage of this type of correction is that it does not require in-situ measurements during each satellite overflight. While substantial differences are present between Top-Of-the Atmosphere (TOA) reflectance and in-situ measurements, the results showed that Case 1 based on COST model gives most accurate results among three cases. The accuracy of Case 2 is very close to Case 1 and its values are smaller than in-situ data. No notable features appear between some bands in the Case 3 and in-situ data. It is expected from this study that if the current methods are applied to the IKONOS high resolution data, we will be able to develop the suitable atmospheric correction methods for MSC data.

The LEOP Cal/Val (Launch and Early Operation Phase Calibration/Validation) was carried out during 6 months after KOMPSAT-3A (KOMPSAT-3A Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-3A) was launched in March 2015. After LEOP Cal/Val was successfully completed, high resolution KOMPSAT-3A has been successfully distributing to users over the past 8 years. The sub-meter high-resolution satellite image data obtained from KOMPSAT-3A is used as basic data for qualitative and quantitative information extraction in various fields such as mapping, GIS (Geographic Information System), and national land management, etc. The KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) periodically checks and manages the quality of KOMPSAT-3A's product and the characteristics of satellite hardware to ensure the accuracy and reliability of information extracted from satellite data of KOMPSAT-3A. To minimize the deterioration of image quality due to aging of satellite hardware, payload and attitude sensors of KOMPSAT-3A, continuous improvement of image quality has been carried out. In this paper, the Cal/Val work-flow defined in the KOMPSAT-3A development phase was illustrated for the period of before and after the launch. The MTF, SNR, and location accuracy are the key parameters to estimate image quality and the methods of the measurements of each parameter are also described in this work. On the basis of defined quality parameters, the performance was evaluated and measured during the period of after LEOP Cal/Val. The current status and characteristics of MTF, SNR, and location accuracy of KOMPSAT-3A from 2016 to May 2020 were described as well.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is becoming more attractive navigation means for LEO (Low Earth Orbit) spacecraft due to the data accuracy and convenience for utilization. The anomalies such as serious variations of Dilution-Of-Precision (DOP), loss of infrequent 3-dimensional position fix, and deterioration of instantaneous accuracy of position and velocity data could be observed, which have not been appeared during the ground testing. It may cause lots of difficulty for the processing of the orbit control algorithm using the GPS data. In this paper, the characteristics of the GPS data were analyzed according to the configuration of GPS receiver such as position fix algorithm and mask angle using GPS navigation data obtained from the first Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT). The problem in orbit tracking using GPS data, including the infrequent deterioration of the accuracy, and an efficient algorithm for its countermeasures has also been introduced. The reliability and efficiency of the modified algorithm were verified by analyzing the effect of the results between algorithm simulation using KOMPSAT flight data and ground simulator.

This study proposes a method to improve the geometric quality of KOMPSAT (Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite)-3/3A Level 1R imagery, particularly for efficient disaster damage analysis. The proposed method applies a novel grid-based SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) method to the Planetscope ortho-imagery, which solves the inherent limitations in acquiring appropriate optical satellite imagery over disaster areas, and the KOMPSAT-3/3A imagery to extract GCPs (Ground Control Points) required for the RPC (Rational Polynomial Coefficient) bias compensation. In order to validate its effectiveness, the proposed method was applied to the KOMPSAT-3 multispectral image of Gangnueng which includes the April 2019 wildfire, and the KOMPSAT-3A image of Daejeon, which was additionally selected in consideration of the diverse land cover types. The proposed method improved the geometric quality of KOMPSAT-3/3A images by reducing the positioning errors(RMSE: Root Mean Square Error) of the two images from 6.62 pixels to 1.25 pixels for KOMPSAT-3, and from 7.03 pixels to 1.66 pixels for KOMPSAT-3A. Through a visual comparison of the post-disaster KOMPSAT-3 ortho-image of Gangneung and the pre-disaster Planetscope ortho-image, the result showed appropriate geometric quality for wildfire damage analysis. This paper demonstrated the possibility of using Planetscope ortho-images as an alternative to obtain the GCPs for geometric calibration. Furthermore, the proposed method can be applied to various KOMPSAT-3/3A research studies where Planetscope ortho-images can be provided.
Arctic warming is a global issue. The sea ice in the Arctic plays a crucial role in the climate system. We thought that a recent abnormality in many countries in the northern hemisphere could be related to the effects of shrinking sea ice in the Arctic. Many research groups monitor sea ice in the Arctic for climate research. Satellite remote sensing is an integral part of Arctic sea ice research due to the Arctic's large size, making it difficult to observe with general research equipment, and its extreme environment that is difficult for humans to access. Along with monitoring recent weather changes, Korea scientists are conducting polar remote sensing using a Korean satellite series to actively cope with environmental changes in the Arctic. The Korean satellite series is known as KOMPSAT (Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite, Korean name is Arirang) series, and it carries optical and imaging radar. Since the organization of the Satellite Remote Sensing and Cryosphere Information Center in Korea in 2016, Korean research on and monitoring of Arctic sea ice has accelerated rapidly. Moreover, a community of researchers studying Arctic sea ice by satellite remote sensing increased in Korea. In this article, we review advances in Korea's remote sensing research for the polar cryosphere over the last several years. In addition to satellite remote sensing, interdisciplinary studies are needed to resolve the current limitations on research on climate change.

As high-resolution satellite images have enabled large scale topographic mapping and monitoring on global scale with short revisit time, agile sensor orientation, and large swath width, many countries make effort to secure the satellite image information. In Korea, KOMPSAT-2 (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-2) was launched in July 28 2006 with high specification. These satellites have stereo image acquisition capability for 3D mapping and monitoring. To efficiently handle stereo images such as stereo display and monitoring, the accurate epipolar image generation process is prerequisite. However, the process was highly limited due to complexity in epipolar geometry of pushbroom sensor. Recently, the piecewise approach to generate epipolar images using RPC was developed and tested for in-track IKONOS stereo images. In this paper, the piecewise approach was tested for KOMPSAT-2 across-track stereo images to see how accurately KOMPSAT-2 epipolar images can be generated for 3D geospatial applications. In the experiment, two across-track stereo sets from three KOMPSAT-2 images of different dates were tested using RPC as the sensor model. The test results showed that one-pixel level of y-parallax was achieved for manually measured tie points.
KOMPSAT-1 (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite ? 1) EOC (Electro Optic Camera) raw images are radiometrically corrected on ground based on the characteristics of EOC. They consist of each CCD (Charge?Coupled Device) pixel’s calibration slope which was measured on ground, electrical gains which are applied to amplify for increasing output pixel counts. Currently, radio-metrically corrected EOC images with calibration slope have still shown defective features by residual stripes. So, it should be compensated by adjusting the calibration slope. In this paper, the adjustment of current calibration slope for de-striping EOC images is addressed and test results are shown.
