  • This paper describes the forecast of wholesale price in competitive Korean electricity market using the system dynamics approach. The system dynamics concepts have been implemented with the Ithink software. This software facilitates the development of stock and flow model with information feedback. Using this model, the future wholesale electricity price can be computed hour by hour, quarterly, and yearly. This model also gives the energy planner the opportunity to create different scenarios for the future of deregulated wholesale markets in Korea. Also It will lead to increased understanding of competitive wholesale market as a complex, dynamic system. Research results show that the plant construction appeared in waves of boom and bust in Korean electricity market like real estate construction. That is, the Korea wholesale market's new power plants and the market price will appear the Boom and Bust cycle. It is very similar behavior as real estate industry. In case of consideration of DSM program, The DSM savings lead to a somewhat different timing of the booms in construction and of price spikes. But the DSM programs do not eliminated the fundamental dynamics of the boom and bust. And the wholesale price is maintained at the lower level compared to the case of without DSM program. However, the unexpected result is found that due to the lower market price, Investor make significantly less investment in new CCs, which leads to the higher wholesale price after 2010. It suggests that the DSM Policy must be implemented with the dynamics of competitive Electricity Market.

  • Purpose - The market orientation of a manufacturer is a very critical competitive advantage factor in the development of new markets and the sustainability and maintenance of existing ones, achieved through the design of customer-oriented products. This is recognized as a virtuous circle, in which firms grow by means of promoting quality management. However, though market-oriented activities are important in management and operations, they seem to be promoted mainly by large-scale enterprises rather than by small- and medium-scale firms, the latter having invested relatively few company resources. Furthermore, few studies and analyses have examined how market orientation relates to the expansion of quality programs within organizations or with business performance; the market orientation and customer-orientation concepts are mixed together when both are used in research. Given the current market situation in which the servitization of manufacturing firms is rapidly expanding, this study's analysis of the effect on market orientation of manufacturers is a significant contribution. From this perspective, this study has several objectives. First, is to analyze and suggest the relationship between market orientation and quality management activity for manufacturers, focusing on three sub-activities: products, process, and quality management activities. Second, it is intended to identify correlation between manufacturers' market oriented activity and their management performance and then to analyze how market orientation affects business performance. The results of a number of prior studies on the correlation between market orientation and management performance have indicated that market orientation does affect management performance. Third, this study also investigates whether any differences in the relationship among market orientation, quality management activity and business performance occur according to company size. The results are used to present operational suggestions for large- and small- and medium-size firms. Research design, data, methodology - This study seeks to analyze and identify the causal features of the organic relationship among market orientation, quality management, and management performance for Korean manufacturing companies using three years (2005-2007) of market orientation, quality management, and business performance data. Subsequently, structural equation modeling was used to analyze the causal features of related factors and it aims to identify the features of market orientation, quality management, and business performance. Results - The analysis examined how market orientation affected the quality management and management performance of 159 smalland medium-size companies. In particular, enterprise quality management was analyzed in relation to management performance with a focus on activities such as leadership, measurement and improvement, quality control, cost management, and process management. Conclusions - The result of the analysis show that market orientation significantly affected all of the quality management activities and that market orientation in turn significantly affected organizational performance. The result of analysis indicate that quality management activities have a significant effect on quality control and cost management.

  • This study introduces 'Free Market' that was recently developed in front of Hongik university. 'Free market', as a place for transactions for art products produced by artists or prospective artists, is held regularly every Saturday in front of Hongik university. This study collected data through in-depth interviews with participants and participant observations at the market to analyze the success factors of 'Free Market'. We described development process, unique characteristics of 'Free Market' and new experiential values that the market provide to the participants. This free market was introduced as roadside stand in the middle of 1990s when some artists started selling their works. It passed through the growth stage after it staged the event that had mixed characteristics of 'flee market' and 'art market' at local festivals in 2001. In 2002 Sin-Chon culture forum directedculture-oriented market and the market has been developed as a current 'Free Market'. Recently 'Free Market' is comprised of steps, artists, and customers who voluntarily participated in the market. The market is held regularly every Saturday and provide various types of programs for the participants. Major characteristics of this free market were summarized as 'complex space' and 'role transition', and these characteristics provided the participants new experiential values such as 'freedom', 'emergent experiences', 'social interaction' and 'hero of festivals' through the participant role. We interpret that 'Free Market' has been successfully settled down as a new type of retail store based on these new experiential values. Therefore, this case provides very useful implications that unique experiential values that a store provides to the customers can be major sources of store competitive advantages.

  • After 2008 global financial crisis, Korean housing market has experienced stagnation. So it caused housing market problems like housing price reduction, rising rent cost and so on. For housing market normalization government announced policies but Korean housing market didn't recover from stagnation. So, to understand why Korean housing market couldn't overcome the recession and why the policies didn't be effective, this research analyzed housing market participants (home owner, housing demand) based on the law of supply and demand and the psychological effect on their transaction intention based on behavioral economics(behavioral finance). Based on the analysis this research tested the effectiveness of announced policies using System Dynamics. The result showed that the amount of transaction and mortgage loan was influenced by the length of time to draft policies.

  • MAS based market simulator has attracted the attentions of people who are interested in using or developing electricity market simulator. MAS based approach makes it possible to model each market participant's strategic behaviors. Traditional market simulators have used optimization formulation to model market operation, which has been used since vertically integrated system. Optimization mainly uses cost minimization or welfare maximization of entire system. Therefore it is somehow difficult to model the independently strategic behaviors of market participants. MAS is one of AI technology based on distributed intelligence which makes it possible to model independently acting entities in competitive market. This paper proposes the method to model strategic participants in electricity market based on MAS.

  • Korea electricity market consists of two payment systems, capacity and energy. Capacity payments are given to the generators according to its hourly availability considering hourly and seasonal weighting factors. Energy payments are settled at the marginal generation cost based on generator variable cost. In 2007, base load energy market is closed and single capacity payment system is begun to apply in electricity market. In this revised market rule, energy price cap for base load generators is newly introduced. We analyze impact of market rule revision in 2007 on base load generators and suggest improvement scheme to enforce market system in this study.

  • In this paper, effects of the subsidy in the electricity market on the market equilibrium are analyzed. The generation competition markets are considered as the basic market structure. The market equilibrium with Cournot game model is derived, first. Then, the variation of Nash equilibrium is investigated when the subsidies to generation companies are provided. The market equilibrium with the subsidy in the electricity market, which is equivalent to the subgame perfect equilibrium, is analytically derived using Stackelberg game model and backward induction method. From this, how the provisions of subsidy to generation companies can affect the strategic behaviors of the generation companies and corresponding market equilibrium are explored, in this paper. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the basic idea of this paper.

  • Transmission congestion is one of the key factors to local market power in competitive electricity markets. Financial transmission rights provide the financial protection to their holders by paying back the congestion cost. However, the market participants who have market power can exacerbate their market power. Due to the exacerbated market power, this paper analyzes the mitigation of local market power using Contingent transmission rights on the market price. Contingent transmission rights provide not only the financial protection but also regulative penalty. The proposed methodology was demonstrated with the Optimal Power Flow(OPF).
