  • Previous studies demonstrated that laser ablation under transparent liquid can result in ablation enhacement and particle removal from the surface. In this work, the liquid-assisted excimer laser ablation process is examined fer polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), Si, and alumina with emphasis on ablation enhacement, surface topography, and debris formation. In the case of PET and PMMA, the effect of liquid is analyzed both fer thin water film and bulk water. As the ablation enhanement by liquid is already known for Si and alumina, the analysis focuses on surface topography and debris formation resulting from the liquid-assisted laser ablation process. The results show that application of liquid increases the ablation rate of PMMA while that of PET remains unchanged even in the liquid-assisted process. It is also revealed that the liquid can significantly improve the surface quality by reducing the debris deposition. However, the surface roughness is generally deteriorated in the liquid-assisted process. The surface toporaphy is found to be strongly dependent on the method of liquid application, i.e., thin film or bulk liquid.

  • This study, Using Pusan clay, examined a relationship between Dynamic and Static Liquid Tests. The Static Liquid Tests wow carried out based on BS and JIS. The results of the study are summarized as follows. (1) The result of the Dynamic Liquid Limit Test showed that the liquid limit values of air-dried soil were greater than those of oven-dried soil by 4%~15% (2) The liquid limit value of the Static Liquid Limit Test was greater than that of the Dynamic Liquid Limit Test by 2%~9%. The following equations show the relationship between the two values WL,Fall(JIS) = 0.961ㆍWL,Cas. + 4.209 WL,Fall(BS) = 0.969ㆍWL,Cas + 5.024 (3) The liquid limit value of BS was greater than that of JIS by 1%~6%. The following equation shows the relationship between the two values.

  • Film boiling heat transfer characteristics in liquid-liquid systems are studied experimentally. Liquid gallium as a heating liquid, n-pentane, freon-113, and ethanol are used as boiling liquids. In gallium-n-pentane and gallium-freon-113 systems the minimum film boiling point occurred at higher temperature than those observed in copper-boiling liquid systems. However MFB point occurred almost at the same temperature for the case of ethanol. This difference are due to the effects of contact angle and interfacial agitations in gallium-boiling liquid systems. Film boiling heat transfer rate, for the gallium-boiling liquid systems considered in this work, found to be approximately 10% higher than those in copper-boiling liquid systems, whose main cause is believed to be gallium-boiling liquid interfacial agitations affected by the density ratio between gallium and boiling liquid.

  • In order to search for the ways of use in distilled liquid of Shogunjung-tang, an oriental medical prescription, the study examined the differences in the activated degree of cells and immunological effects, which are supplied by restoratives such as the existing extracted liquid and distilled liquid of Shogunjung-tang. As seen from the above results, both the extracted liquid of Shogunjung-tang and distilled liquid have remarkable efficiency in the increase of cells, the efficient condition of immunity activation degree possibly formed by these two and activation of cells and organism, in which distilled liquid in the beginning and the extracted liquid later tend to show its efficiency.

  • The intervocalic Korean liquid sound has been recognized as a flap in the studies of the Korean language. But there has been very little experimental data corroborating it. The electropalatographic (EPG) experiment was conducted to test this. The subjects were one Korean speaker and one native English speaker who had a pseudopalate and did the EPG experiment at the UCLA phonetics laboratory. The spectrographic evidence of the flaps in both the English t-flap and the Korean liquid flap was also sought. The English and Korean flaps were between mid/low back vowels so that the vowels themselves would not affect palatal contacts of the tongue. The results confirmed that the Korean liquid is realized as a flap in intervocallical position with many similar properties to English flap in both EPG and spectrographic data. The Korean initial liquid sound in borrowed words such as 'rotary' and 'radio' was also a flap. But the Korean liquid in the word-final and geminate positions was a lateral as in words 'dol ' (stone), 'dollo' (with stone), 'nal' (day) and 'nallara' (carry). The intuitive theory of the Korean liquid flap was proved by the EPG and spectrographic data.

  • Characteristics of gas-liquid mass transfer and interfacial area were investigated in a bubble column of diameter and height of 0.102 m and 2.5 m, respectively. Effects of gas and liquid velocities on the volumetric gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient ($k_La$), interfacial area (a) and liquid side true mass transfer coefficient ($k_L$) were examined. The interfacial area and volumetric gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient were determined directly by adopting the simultaneous physical desorption of $O_2$ and chemical absorption of $CO_2$ in the column. The values of $k_La$ and a increased with increasing gas velocity but decreased with increasing liquid velocity in the bubble column which was operated in the churn turbulent flow regime. The value of $k_L$ increased with increasing gas velocity but did not change considerably with increasing liquid velocity. The liquid side mass transfer was found to be related closely to the liquid circulation as well as the effective contacting frequency between the bubbles and liquid phases.

  • The purpose of this study was experimentally to investigate the disintegration process and disintegration mechanism when co-axial air flows vertically for the longest smooth liquid jet. These were affected by liquid velocity, air velocity, air-to-liquid diameter ratio, nozzle shape, and air-liquid contacting position. That is, this process of disintegration of the liquid jet was similar to that occurred when liquid pressure was increased. At Reynolds number of 10, 000 and below, the changes in the breakup length represent different tendency according to liquid flow rate. The influence of air flow on the disintegration of liquid jet was different according to air-to-liquid diameter ratio, air orifice diameter, nozzle shape and contacting position of liquid and air. In particular, when the tip of liquid nozzle was inside the air orifice, the effect of air flow was the larger than outside the air orifice. The effect of liquid mass flow rate on the change rate of the breakup length was also different.
